Fluorescent light bulbs seem like a great way to save on energy with lighting, right? Well yes, but there are a couple of big concerns when using them. Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) are so fragile that they often break, and when they do, it’s not just shattered glass that will hit the floor, but mercury as well, both of which are a major problem if you have kids or pets.
The new ArmorLite EcoSafety Coating resolves both of these concerns, plus makes those spirally bulbs look a lot nicer. Basically a regular spiral fluorescent light bulb inside a protective Safety Coating, the ArmorLite bulb looks like an incandescent bulb, but will keep all the broken shards of glass and mercury safely inside the skin in the event that it breaks. Nix Digital have created the first ever motion sensing digital photo frame which will switch itself on when you pass within 2.5 metres in front of it. The interval timer can be set from between 1 minute to 24 hours before the photo frame switches itself off again. Alternatively, you can use the provided remote control to switch on the photo frame whenever you want it on! (more…)

The H2Go Radio Controlled Hydrogen Powered Car is probably one of the most advanced eco and educational toys you’ll ever see for children. Basically the car is powered using hydrogen gas, and can reach speeds of up to 6 miles an hour (which is a scale speed equivalent to 80mph!). (more…)

Macally has launched some sustainable bamboo cooling stands for laptops. The stands are designed to go onto your desk, with the laptop on top of the stand. The stand includes two USB-powered 2.5″ (5cm) fans to help dissipate heat away from your laptop. There are two models, the EcoFan (fixed height) and EcoFanPro (adjustable height). (more…)

The Kill-A-Watt Programmable Timer combines a digital programmable timer (for controlling when your gadgets are switched on and off) with an energy consumption meter. Getting the kids interested in the environment with eco-friendly toys is a great idea. The Solar-Powered Speed Boat Kit will keep the children occupied for a few days at least, as the toy helps children to learn about solar energy and motors. Most solar powered security lights automatically switch on when motion is detected, however, the Solar Mate Point 5 is a little different in that it is switched on and off via a keyfob remote control. The battery is charged up via the solar panel during the day, and a fully charged battery gives you around 3 hours of continuous light. (more…)

Konarka Industries have partnered with German retailer Neuber to create lightweight Energy Sun-Bags, which are fitted with a 1.4W solar panel that can charge most portable gadgets that need a charging power supply up to 5V at 600mA. It was about a year ago when I reported on the YoGen Max, which is as foot-powered laptop charger. However, Easy Energy are at it again with their YoGen Hand-Powered Gadget Charger. The YoGen charger charges virtually any mobile gadget by using a draw and release mechanism. (more…)
