WindJet is a fascinating concept for a hybrid car with a difference. The vehicle would be powered by electricity and its battery would be able to charge through wind power while the vehicle is in motion, helping to make it truly fuel efficient.

The WindJet concept comes from designer Nathan Hintz, he proposes that by using low drag turbines attached to the vehicle the internal battery would be able to receive charge while the vehicle is in motion from the turbine. The movement of the air through the turbine as the car travels along would rotate it, which would allow a dynamo to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy. This would be charging the battery while the car is in motion, helping to avoid the need to stop and charge the car.

The concept helps to minimize the main issue with electric cars, how the electricity that has been used to power it has been produced. Though charging a car through mains electricity is thought to be greener than running a petrol engine, the CO2 that can be produced in the production of the electricity is also a cause for concern. The concept suggests the ability to charge the car less frequently by making use of the wind produced by the cars own movement, helping also to extend the distance a vehicle can then travel from one charge. The WindJet concept demonstrates a way to recharge a vehicles battery while in motion through a green energy source.

The ecoRoute software has been created by Garmin to allow drivers to easily find the most fuel efficient route on a sat nav system. When the less fuel option is selected on the sat nav the system uses road speed and vehicle acceleration data to identify the most fuel efficient route for that journey. The software can display in Fuel Report setting your fuel usage over time to help you see exactly how much fuel your car is consuming regularly. The system has a setting called Mileage Report that can monitor your mileage and fuel usage for each journey. The report is useful for displaying exactly how many miles you have traveled, which can be important to those needing to keep track of mileage for reimbursements. This data can be edited to make it as accurate as possible for your car by entering your car’s fuel economy details and the current price of petrol/diesel.

The ecoRoute software is pre-installed on the Garmin Nüvi 1490T and the Garmin Nüvi 1210 sat nav systems. Both systems come installed with full UK maps, the 1490T also has full maps for Europe installed. The 1490T also has Lane Assist and Junction View, these settings help you to be in the right lane at the right time, which can be a useful aid at large junctions. Both of these sat nav systems have Bluetooth technology to allow you to use the system to make handsfree calls.

G-Bike have two main models of bike. The chopper electric bike is designed to look more like an average bicycle, specifically a chopper. The 500 watt brushless hub motor provides the bike with a top speed of around 20 mph. The lead-acid 12 Ah 48v battery can be fully charged in around 4 to 6 hours and can provide you with up to 31 miles of use. It can handle a gradient of up to 12%.

The standard electric bike has a design that is similar to that of a scooter. The bike uses the same 500w brushless hub motor but uses a 20Ah 48v sealed lead acid battery. This allows it to be able to provide a top speed of 20 mph, and can provide a range of use between 35 and 42 miles depending on conditions. The battery requires 4 – 8 hours to fully charge. Due to the bike having a scooter like design this model has additions like shock absorbers, mirrors and a comfortable seat.

Both models can either be peddled or powered from the electric motor. This allows you to use the motor to help assist you in cycling, to help with hills, or for longer journeys. The motor also allows you to have a burst of increased speed when required, for example to allow you to move out of another vehicles way quickly when needed.

The makers believe it takes only around 20 cents worth of electricity to fully power the bikes batteries helping to make the bikes an affordable way to take trips that are perhaps a bit too far for leg power alone. Ideally it would be best to charge the bikes from a eco-friendly electricity source but for those that lack that ability the electric bikes would still usually be a better alternative for the environment than taking a form of diesel or petrol powered transportation.
