The Solar Powered Clip Watch is a concept design by Mac Funamizu. The clip watch is meant to look like a button to help it not look out of place on any outer garment or bag. The time is displayed on the screen briefly once the screen has been pressed.

The Industrial Designer Mac Funamizu felt this concept dealt with the issue of getting your hands out of your pockets, or even pulling back gloves and layers of sleeves to see the time on a normal watch. By having the watch on outer garments, like your coat, the time would just be a simple press away. Of course you will need to press the watch face to display the time, which could still get your hands cold! Many just use their mobile phone to display the time, but with the rise in popularity in touch screens, which often do not respond well to operation by gloved fingers, this clip watch could be an excellent solution.

Because the clip watch has been designed to go on the outer layers of clothes it can make use of the light around it at all times, instead of being hidden away under sleeves and such like. A solar panel is part of the screen, taking in the light and using it to power the watch, so no issues with running out of power or replacing batteries. The watch screen only displays the time for a few seconds when pressed, as this is usually all that is needed when checking the time. This helps to conserve energy while helping the illusion that the watch is just another button.

The H2O Water Powered Can Clock uses state of the art water technology to power a large hi contrast display (LCD) clock. This clock will run continuously for a long time without needing any human intervention.

By using positive and negative electrodes (in a similar way to the potato clocks of old, yet more attractive) the H2O Water Powered Can Clocks patented technology creates an electrochemical reaction with water, thus producing the electrical energy for powering the LCD clock display. The Can clock is the size and shape of a conventional can of drink, roughly 11cm x 5.8cm (4.3in. x 2.3in.), its coloured transparent body allowing you to see the electrodes within.

The water will need replacing due to evaporation. The evaporation though should be at a slow rate as the water is well encased, meaning it will only require a water top up every 6 to 12 months.

The battery for the H2O Water Powered Can Clock does have a minimum continuous life of 2 years, though by simply allowing the device to fully dry out when no longer required you will elongate its years of usage, as it will be ready to go again as soon as the can shaped clock is once again full of water.

The Solar-Powered Hybrid Alarm Clock is an interesting clock as it uses both battery and solar power to work. During the day, the clock is powered using solar power gathered from it’s solar panel. At night, the clock glows blue due to the blue backlit display. Therefore the clock is designed to save energy by using as much solar energy as possible.

The clock also features an alarm mode with a snooze button, a calendar mode, a second time zone button, and a summertime switch to handle British Summer Time (BST).

It would have been better if the clock had featured a larger solar panel with an internally rechargeable battery, however, the energy consumption of the backlit display is likely to be pretty significant compared to the amount of energy the solar panel is likely to provide. Therefore in the absence of a large solar panel, the battery is needed to provide the backlit display.

The hybrid clock is available for £14.99 plus delivery.

The Solar-Powered Clock by Vandasye was created as part of the Vienna Design Week Laboratory, where visitors could see all aspects of the process as a design was being realised. The clock has been designed for interior use, and therefore has a large solar-power to absorb as much light energy as possible.

Despite the slightly odd appearance, it’s one of the first solar clocks that I’ve seen that also include a backlit display for night time. The energy consumption of a LCD clock is very low, however, the backlight increases the power requirements significantly. That’s probably the reason for the large solar panel.

The design is a prototype, so I’m not sure we’ll see it in the shops anytime soon.

I’m sure many of you will agree, something frustrating about watches is that the battery needs changing every so often. Getting a watch battery usually costs a few quid, and is usually hassle too. Solar-powered watches are slowly becoming more common and cheaper, and the Pulsar Men’s Solar Powered Tech Gear Dive Watch is a great example of a solar-powered watch that’s both desirable and affordable.

The watch is able to recharge from any light source, and it will run for 180 days without another charge once the watch is fully charged. When only 3 days of battery life remain, an indicator will light up on the watch. The watch has a marine blue dial with luminous hands and markers for excellent visibility in poor light. The watch also has a second hand and a date indicator.

The watch is suitable for diving at up to 200 metres, and it comes with a handy extension system on the bracelet to allow it to fit over clothing such as a diving suit. The current price of the watch is just $89.00 plus shipping costs.

There’s no question, watches are really useful. However, two things that I really I hate about watches is needing to replace expensive batteries periodically, and needing to ensure the date and time are correct every couple of months or so. Finally there’s now a watch that remedies both problems, namely the Worldwide Atomic Solar Watch. The watch features a solar panel which charges the internal watch battery, which when fully charged, will run the watch for up to 7 months without being charged again!

The other great feature is that the watch is able to receive up to 6 different atomic clock transmissions. This means the watch can automatically set itself to the correct time if you’re in or near the U.S., UK, Germany, Japan or China. This means no more late appointments or meetings (unless something other than your watch goes wrong). The watch automatically adjusts for daylight savings time, so you don’t need to worry about adjusting the watch when the clocks change either.

The watch also has a stopwatch feature and it’s water-resistant to a depth of around 150 to 200 metres under water. The watch is available for $159.95, which is not cheap, but certainly in the realms of affordability.

Well, there are mud powered clocks, water-powered clocks, solar-powered clocks, so its not much of a stretch to see a bug-eating insect-guts powered clock! Created by designers Jimmy Loizeau and James Auger, the gadget harvests bugs from a sticky conveyor belt. The captured insects are then deposited on to a microbial fuel cell for digestion.

Specially chosen bacteria will then break down the bug guts, with a range of chemical reactions providing the energy to drive the clock. Certainly an interesting way to control pests without using chemicals, but doing something useful with the bodies! I love it.

The Solar Powered Clock is a simple solar-powered clock gadget that runs entirely on solar power in order to work. The clock comes with two sets of hands so that you can either wall-mount the clock or have it free-standing.

When the clock is getting sunlight, the clock charges up the internal rechargeable batteries. That means the clock will work when there’s no sunlight either. The clock works on either sunlight or artificial light to charge up, which means you don’t need the clock in direct sunlight.

Costing £24.99, it’s a lot of money for very few features. It would have been nice to have numbers on this clock, as well as a feature for the clock to automatically adjust its time and date using radio signals. Perhaps the next version of the clock will have those features!

If you don’t have any batteries, but you have plenty of soil, then you’ll like this mud powered digital clock. Using nothing but damp soil and 2 different metals, the current that’s created is enough to power a digital clock. The clock is designed as an educational eco toy, helping kids to learn a little about the chemistry of batteries.

The kit uses copper and zinc to create a flow of electrons, which is the current that drives the low voltage digital display. Admitedly, the clock won’t serve much practical purpose, but I’m sure we’ll see more mud-powered clocks in the future. The mud clock is available from Maplin for just £9.99.

We’ve almost seen it all, a water-powered clock, a lemon-powered clock, now we have a mud-powered clock! Designed by Francesco Castiglione Morelli and Tommaso Ceschi, the Timeless Garden uses the chemical reaction between metal and mud to generate enough electricity to power a clock!

You can plant what you like in the clock, and grass has been chosen for this design. Not only do you remove the need for electricity, but the oxygen-generating benefits of a plant also does its bit for the environment. Going one step further, the clock itself is made from recycled plastic.

As far as eco-friendly clocks go, this has got to be the most appealing I’ve ever seen. It would be even more useful to have a larger plant pot, as well as a clock that uses the MSF signal to automatically set itself to the right time.
