The Hot Cup is a kettle that boils only one cup of water at a time, from a small cup to a decent mug full. The kettle helps you to save electricity by only heating the water you require in an energy efficient way.

The Hot Cup by Breville can hold up to 2 liters of water at a time, enough to fill around 5 cups before the water chamber requires refillings. The amount of water for each cup can be altered using a switch on the side, it can be set to allow you a small, medium or large cup of hot water (up to 300ml at a time). The kettle does have a stop button, so if you have selected too much fluid for you cup you can stop the water.

The Hot Cup has a drip tray ready to catch any water, should a cup overflow or if the cup is not under the water nozzle, this ensures hot water is always safely contained. The kettle is easy to use, once the main chamber is filled, and the amount of water required selected, you simply place a cup under the nozzle on the drip tray and press the start button. The water chamber lights up while the water is boiling, the water takes just under a minute to boil a cup (around 40 seconds depending on size of cup selected).

The Hot Cup helps to save electricity by not boiling unused water, it provides you with exactly the water you require quickly, however in situations where a round of hot drinks in needed the kettle would require separate boiling for each cup, in such situations this kettle may not be appropriate.

This Ionising Light Bulb is an energy saving light bulb that also produces negative ions. These ions are thought to help clean the air of things like dust and bacteria to help improve the air quality.

The Fresh Light Ionising Light Bulb by Eudemon claims to help improve the air quality in a room where a bulb is in operation by ridding the air of odours, pollutants, contaminants and smoke. The makers suggest that a bulb would be able to cleanse the air of odours by nearly 40% in two hours.

There is some debate on the effectiveness of negative ions to cleanse the air effectively, especially if there is a single light in a large room space. The makers however believe there is supporting evidence to the bulbs effectiveness. At the very least the bulb will use less energy than an incandescent equivalent.

Flo is a desk light concept using the form and function of sink taps as an integral influence on its design. By operating the taps a user can control the light level, giving a range of lighting from a soft warm light to a cool bright light.

The Flo lighting concept has been designed by Michael Angelini to help users be more aware of the electricity they are using. The taps used to control lighting level have also been used to help a user be subtly reminded that electricity, like water, is something we should all be actively working to conserve. The desk lamp allows you to operate the lighting level from the tap switches, the light can be used for different lighting levels depending on what the user requires. It would seem that using a warmer, lower light level would use less electricity than using the cool, brighter light levels. This would allow you to have a desk lamp that is suitable for all occasions and, by selecting lower light levels when acceptable, can help reduce your energy usage.

The Flo desk light would be constructed in the majority from recycled materials, helping the light to be as eco-friendly as possible. By using LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) as the light source, the desk light will use less electricity than one operating an incandescent bulb, while having many benefits over low energy light bulbs like CFLs (Compact Florescent Light/lamp). The LEDs will last longer than both incandescent and CFL bulbs and LEDs, unlike CFL bulbs, contain no mercury.

The LED bulbs should also turn on straight away without the warm up time that CFLs need. The EnduraLED can also be used with dimmer switches, something most CFLs cannot currently achieve.

The EnduraLED bulb marks a significant change to the way we light our homes. It offers an effective low energy equivalent to CFL lighting while avoiding the negatives of CFLs. The bulbs offer a way forward towards energy efficient lighting that can really be considered to be eco friendly.

The GuruPlug-Server Plus is a small server designed to be plugged directly into a standard mains plug socket. This server allows you to do everything you usually would with a standard sized server while using far less electricity.

The GuruPlug-Server Plus is a full server with a 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM and comes with Linux Kernel 2.6.32 embedded on its internal memory. This allows it to function as a regular server, while taking up a fraction of the space. More importantly it draws only a fraction of the power. The server is thought to draw only 5 watts in normal operation, this compares to a regluar computer drawing roughly 175 watts when operated similarly.

Because the server is so small it lacks many features we take as standard, such as hard drive space or a video card. Luckily the server comes with an eSATA2 port, which allows you to connect a high speed external SATA2 hard drive to it. The server also features two Gigabit Ethernet ports to allow wired network connections at a high speed.  It also has both Wifi (802.11 b and g) and bluetooth capabilities to provide wireless network connections. The server also comes with two USB 2.0 ports and a MicroSD port, this allows you to add on more peripherals and expand the internal storage capacity of the server.

The GuruPlug-Server Plus provides you with all the basic requirements you could need in a server for home use, while allowing you to expand it as required. As with most Linux servers you access it remotely, but this then limits it to command line operation. It would be suitable for applications such as a file server for a household, a dedicated firewall to improve network security, or you could even use it as the control centre for a Smart House. The server can perform these functions while drawing very little electrical power, thus enabling you to have a server running permanently without the same concerns regarding electrical usage that you would have for a regular computer.

The ECO3 is an eco kettle that helps you to save electricity in two ways. Firstly it helps you to only heat the amount of water you need, secondly it allows you to heat the water to lower temperatures, perfect for use but draining less energy than boiling.

The ECO3 has a maximum capacity of 1.5 liters, once this water has been placed into the kettle you can select how much of the water you wish to boil. It does seem to have a minimum requirement of around 200ml, which is about enough water to fill a cup. You select how much of the main water reservoir you wish to boil with the knob on the top of the lid, by pressing down on it you will see water enter the heating chamber. This has a measurement guide marked out on it so you can press for just the amount of water you require.

Once you have the water required in the heating chamber, the kettle is ready to start heating. There are three different temperature settings, by selecting one of these settings the kettle starts to heat. The settings are designed for different purposes, the lowest  setting is 80°C which is great for specialty teas, or for a hot drink that is ready for drinking quicker, perfect for when you do not have much time. The 90°C setting is good for making coffee and also allows you a quicker cooling time than boiling the kettle fully. The third setting allows you to boil the water fully for when only boiled water will do. When the kettle reaches the temperature you have selected it will produce an audible alarm to alert you that it is ready and switch itself off.

The 360° charging round allows you to place the kettle on it facing wherever you wish while still being operable, this charging base  allows the kettle itself to be cordless. The ENVI is an energy monitor designed by Current Cost.  The system is connected to your electricity supply to provide you with information on your usage through a wireless display panel.

The ENVI Energy Monitor comprises a sensor, a transmitter and a display unit. The sensor needs to be clamped around your electricity live feed (usually the cable coming out of the electricity meter in your house) and is connected to the transmitter. This transmitter sends all the data regarding your energy usage to the wireless display unit, which allows you to track energy usage up to 30 meters away from it.

The display unit provides you with many details regarding your electricity usage, for example it informs you of the cost of the current electricity drain. The display can provide the information in graph form, showing night, day and evening consumption. It can inform you of how this differs to previous consumption and it can also use stored information to forecast daily, weekly and monthly consumption and costs.

The ENVI Energy Monitor system will also be able to track up to 9 individual appliances and show their individual energy usage. This function requires individual appliance modules (IAMs). To function, these will need to be plugged into a UK 3-pin plug socket and have an appliance you wish to monitor plugged into them. These IAM plugs will be sold in sets of 3 separately to the device. The electrical usage information can also be displayed on a computer, though this will require purchasing a connecting data cable.

The system allows you to be aware of the energy usage of your house. It can help to show where energy is being wasted and make the whole household more aware of what they are using. It can show clearly how much of a difference a little effort can make, for example displaying the impact turning off lights or turning a TV fully off can make in terms of money spent. The Sundolier is a system which lights a room using natural light. The device makes the most of the daylight outside and funnels it inside a building into a chandelier. The chandelier disperses the light in an effective way throughout a room.

The Sundolier has been designed by Sunflower Corporation to light a room of around 1000 to 2500 square feet. It achieves this by using its active two-axis tracking mount, which has a couple of reflectors built into it, to reflect the light in such a way to focus it into a funnel. The light is fed into the building to be distributed by the sun chandelier into the room. The chandelier distributes the light along the ceiling and walls of the room. It also prevents anyone being dazzled by the light when looking up underneath it.

Though a room could be lit with natural light through a skylight, skylights can cause a few problems. They often provide very localised lighting and on bright days it is hard to look up around them due to the brightness. They can also cause heat to escape a building during the cooler months and allow the building to overheat during the warmer months. To fully light a room, especially a large one, a skylight would need to be rather large, which would exacerbate these problems.

The Sundolier system differs as it requires only a small hole for the light to be funneled down into the chandelier. This chandelier productively distributes the light while helping to prevent any heat loss or gain. Due to the device focusing the light coming in it provides a lot of actual lighting power while using only a small amount of roof space.

The Sundolier provides electricity free lighting during daylight, though on cloudy days a room may require additional electric lighting to help boost lighting levels. The system helps to provide effective lighting to a building and can help reduce energy bills, even during cloudy times. Sunlight is said to help boost productivity in learning, boost sales in retail, and help workers to be more productive, which could mean many additional advantages to using the system.
