The Current Regulating Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Booster is a small device to help make your car more energy efficient. The device works by regulating the current in the electronics to make sure that a stable current reaches the cars electrical control unit (ECU).

The Current Regulating Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Booster is said to help reduce the amount of fuel used by 18%. The company state that in independent tests they had run by an automotive testing service the device helped to increase a test cars miles per gallon from 28.1 to 23.8 in two weeks.

The D1 PC by Aleutia is a extremely small and energy efficient computer. The D1 compacts all the normal features of a PC into one tiny quiet case.

The Aleutia D1 is under half the size of most other SFF PCs (Small Form Factor Personal Computers) Aleutia claim, measuring only 26.8cm x 31.8cm x 7cm (10.55in x 12.52in x 2.75in) and weighing only 1.8Kg (though Aleutia do also claim it weighs 2.4Kg) compared to other SFF PCs which can weigh around 8Kg. The PC though is not lacking in ability, the D1 comes with an Intel dual core 1.66GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 40GB SATA-II HDD, DVD-RW drive  and many other components that go into making this a suitable PC for office or light home use. The D1 comes with the Ubuntu Linux 9.10 OS as standard but has been tested to be fully compatible with the current Microsoft OSs from Windows XP to Windows 7.

By using energy efficient processors and combining them with laptop components like the DVD-RW drive, the D1 features a low power consumption, using only 26w (though Aleutia also claim it uses 34w, either way an exceptionally low power drain) which could mean the D1 uses only 25% of the energy of other SFF PCs. Because of the energy efficient processors, the D1 also produces less heat, meaning it requires only a small fan to cool the system. The smaller fan causes less sound than conventional desktops, and can only be heard whirring when your ears are very close to it.

The Shower Brake is a concept design to help reduce the amount of water used in showers. The device slowly falls throughout the shower visually alerting you to how much water is being used.

The Shower Brake, designed by Sang-in Lee and Dae Hyun Kim, has been conceived from the idea that we all forget just how long we are spending in a shower and that having a reminder or a timer will help us be quicker and use the time more efficiently. This should then reduce the amount of water used in having a shower and so save on both energy used to heat the water and on water bill costs.

The controls for temperature and water pressure are located on the device which needs to be moved up to start a shower, giving you an alloted amount of water for your shower. You can set the device up only half  the way for a very quick shower so you have control as to how quickly you wish to shower. The device slowly falls steadily over time at a rate proportionate to the amount of water you are using.

If you have the pressure set high then the device will fall quickly and conversely if you set the pressure lower it will fall slower. The device then helps to show visually the difference in water consumption. Once the device has decended to the bottom it will need to be moved back up to allow more water, this is meant to inspire a feeling of guilt in the user making them feel that they have wasted water by not washing quickly enough.

The concept design has benefits to those who step into a shower and lose all sense of time while feeling the warmth of the water on them. It may help people like them by showing visually that time is running out, they need to get on and wash rather than languish in the heat. However a shower can be for enjoyment as well as for cleaning and it’s hard to believe many will really feel too guilty about moving the device back up again. By moving it up though they are then consciously making the choice to use more water and energy for the pleasure of the shower, without any excuse about losing track of time.

The Home Dashboard Concept by Intel is an automation system for your home allowing you to reference information on many electronic devices around your home and keep a close eye on your energy usage. Designed to be energy efficient itself, it aims to help cut down the energy usage of a household by compiling information from the devices connected to it and from sources such as weather reports to make sure everything is working at optimum efficiency.

The Home Dashboard Concept uses Intels Atom processor and an OLED screen. OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diode) may not give off as much light as traditional LEDs but they have been found to have many advantages over LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays) as a display screen. This is because they do not require a backlight to function meaning that they can show more vivid depth to dark colours and blacks, they use a lot less energy to run and can be made into much thinner and lighter displays.  The OLED screen coupled with the Atom processor, which was designed to run on ultra low voltage, means the device itself is energy efficient to run.

This Home Dashboard uses ZigBee home area networking to connect with electrical ’smart’ devices and appliances that have been connected to a ZigBee socket. Many different devices and appliances can then send information on their energy usage to the dashboard and it can use this in conjunction with other information to operate these devices in an energy efficient manner. For example you can use the dashboard to turn off a device that is not currently needed, or with a connection to a thermostat the dashboard can lower energy usage by adapting the settings with regards to the weather forecast, current energy prices and the patterns of usage it has stored for the household.

This Home Dashboard Concept should be able to be connected to many other devices around the home, such as security systems and even baby monitors, to make it a central point of a household where all information about that house is gathered. The dashboard can be accessed externally by a user from the internet allowing control of devices, thermostat and security systems even when on holiday.

By keeping a track on the different devices it can highlight out problem areas, which devices could be more energy efficient and offer more energy efficient replacements. By being more aware of the energy consumption of the household and all its devices and appliances you can reduce your energy bills by taking a more active control over your energy usage.

The Ecobulb is a energy saving idea by Seokjae Rhee. The concept bulb takes advantage of the eco friendly credentials of LED bulbs. Working with a remote control the bulb uses these LEDs to produce a light source that is directional.

The Ecobulb concept is that when lighting a room a lot of light is often not needed, only sections of a room are usually ever requiring lighting at any time. The bulb uses LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) in a 6 compartmental bulb design. The bulb has 6 distinct and separate areas to it which can be controlled with the Ecobulb’s remote control to turn any of these sections on or control the brightness of a section.

LED bulbs have many advantages over the more commonly used energy saving bulb the CFL ( Compact Florescent Light/lamp). The life span of a LED bulb is longer than that of a CFL. CFLs also cause a problem when it comes to disposing of them due to them containing mercury (though this is a trace amount). The LED bulb does not have any such issues while working with approximately the same energy efficiency. The LED bulbs should also turn on straight away without the warm up time that CFLs need.

The Ecobulbs concept then also contributes to less electricity usage as only sections of the light are used at once. There is no light wastage, no light being used to illuminate areas of a room not in use. This, coupled with the brightness control, means that the one light bulb can then take the place of many different light functions, from a small pool of soft light like that of a lamp to a brightly lit room all at the push of a button. One problem may be finding the button to do this, especially if there is a frequent need to change the sections of light as remote controls do often go missing.

The Savaplug is a specially designed energy saving gadget that helps to cut your electrical bills by helping refrigerators and fridge-freezers run more efficiently. The plug should help to reduce electrical bills by around £12 a year.

The Savaplug was created in a project supported by the Department of Energy, its aim is to help reduce the amount of electricity fridges and fridge-freezers use. The device needs to be wired to the fridge or fridge-freezer, but it is as simple as wiring a normal plug, remove the current plug and attach the wires in their correct places within the Savaplug.

The Savaplug then works to lower the energy consumption by reducing the amount of energy getting to the refrigerators motor. When a fridge starts up its motor the energy needed is high, as getting a motor started requires a lot of electricity. However once the motor is going less energy is needed to keep it simply going and it is then that the Savaplug reduces the flow of electricity to the appliance.

It is thought that fridges are one of the most energy intensive items you can run in a house. It is estimated that they cost around £55-£65 a year in electricity. The Savaplug is thought to reduce this usage by around 20%, though they are a lot more effective on older models of refrigerator. The plug will not work with models with an electrical controller.

There is some argument as to the effectiveness of the energy saving plug, as once a motor has fully started up its energy consumption naturally drops. Also most modern models cut their energy consumption to the motor anyway and use smaller motors so there is little to no saving to be made. This product then is more useful for those with old fridges and fridge-freezers who wish to cut their energy usage a little.
