The Byron Elro ES24 Fluorescent Floodlight With Motion Sensor helps to illuminate any outdoor area in an energy efficient manner. It achieves this due to its CFL bulb and its use of a motion sensor.

The Byron Elro ES24 Fluorescent Floodlight With Motion Sensor uses a 24w CFL bulb (Compact Florescent Light/lamp). The Lucet is the name given to this solar powered indoor light design. The light comprises three LED lights surrounding one battery charging area that has a solar panel on the back. The device can then be placed onto windows to charge from the sunlight during the day and illuminate the room at night. The concept is similar to the Spider Solar-Powered Light by Powerplus.

This concept, designed by Rui Palma, could be placed in groups to form a pattern on a window. In actuality many of these Lucets may be needed to provide sufficient light for them to be considered the main light source of a room, though one or two should be fine for a lower ‘mood’ light or in addition to other lighting.

The three LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) are powered from a solar panel on the reverse of the device, this energy charges the batteries which will be two AAA batteries. This may take quite some charging, as the current proposed area for the solar panel is relativly small. Fortunately LEDs require low electricity amounts to produce a strong light so the power of two batteries can be shared between all three lights without to many problems. This may mean the Lucet will not last that long into the evening and will certainly have a shortened time of  use on cloudy days when less charge is picked up due to the lower intensity of the sunlight.

The Lightcap 300 combines a water bottle with a solar powered LED light. This portable device allows you to store liquids within it, or seal away documents and other such items in a watertight container, while still being able to be used as a powerful light.

The Lightcap300 has been designed by Sollight for activities such as camping, where weight is an issue. By combining a water bottle and light together there is less weight to carry and due to the light charging from a solar panel the device is ideal for taking out into the wilderness without worry of losing power or running out of batteries.

The lid of the Lightcap300 comprises of a solar panel on the outside of the lid and 4 white LEDs on the inside of the lid. By placing the bottle, or even just its lid, in sunlight the device will charge. It will provide around 8 hours of illumination when fully charged. The Lightcap300  is turned on by a recessed switch and also has a light sensor which turns the lantern off to prevent draining the battery during daylight hours.

The Lightcap 300 can hold 1 litre of fluid and has a diameter of 10.2cm x 21.6cm  (4in x 8.5in). The bottle has a wide mouth opening to aid drinking and cleaning, this also makes it easier to store valuables or items like a first aid kit within it and get them out easily. The Lightcap300 weighs only 275g (9.7 oz) for bottle and cap together when empty. The bottle comes with built in hanging loops to allow you to hang it by a strap or cord.

The Solar LED Torch And Worklight has been designed by Proteam for use outdoors or in any outside building such as a shed or garage. The system is designed so the unit is left where needed to provide light, from either a fixed point or as a portable torch, while the solar panel is mounted on a wall or roof to take advantage of the maximum amount of sunlight/daylight.

The Solar LED Torch And Worklight comprises a compact amorphous solar cell measuring 11cm x 2.5cm x 15cm (4.3in x 1in x 5.9in) that is designed to be wall mounted (though may be placed onto a low area of roof of a shed), and a light/torch which comes with a charging bracket which is 6cm x 23.5cm (2.4in x 9.3in). The light has been designed to be used either in its charging bracket as a fixed light, or to be removed and used as a torch. To aid this the light has 10 LEDs positioned to provide a fixed light and a further 3 positioned for use as a conventional torch light.

The solar panel charges the 3  600mAh AAA  Ni-MH rechargeable batteries within the light when the light is in the charging bracket. If the light is being used as a torch you will need to remember to place it back into the charging bracket to guarantee the torch will provide you with light. When fully charged the light should provide you with 5 hours of lighting either from the fixed light or from the torch light.

The Solar LED Torch And Worklight also comes with 3 metres of cable to allow you to place the solar panel in an ideal spot for providing sufficient sunlight/daylight for charging while placing the charging bracket and light in a position required for ease of use. This Solar Powered Bubble Light by Ecosavers has a clean and sleek design, with the solar panel for the device built into it. The light has a spike on the end of its post which allows the device to be placed into any lawn, border or pot filled with soil.

The Magtenlight MLS-150 is a lighting system for your bike that uses a contact-less dynamo to generate the energy to power your lights. The system works by mounting a large ring of 32 magnets on the spokes of your bike, which moves past the dynamo coil, generating an electric current. Since the dynamo is not in physical contact with the magnet, the system is frictionless, which means you don’t feel much resistance (otherwise caused by friction) when cycling.

Since there are so many magnets on the magnet ring, the result is a decent amount of electric current, which is enough to power the bright lights. There are two lights in the kit, one for the front, and one for the rear of the bike. Magtenlight has rated the front headlight at 15 Lux when cycling at at 15km/h, which meets German safety requirements going by the mention of the cryptic Germany StVZO 22A No:23 code.

As an additional safety function, the bike will light up for an additional 4 minutes when you stop. This is great if you have a puncture that you need to sort out at the roadside, as drivers and pedestrians will still be able to see you at night. The design looks great and practical, and the pricing within the UK is expected to be around £50 or around 99 Euros in Europe.

The Solar Powered LED Torch by Brando provides a way of powering a torch with solar energy without the solar panel being part of the torch. With the solar panels on the docking station the torch is a more conventional torch shape and its LED light produces a steady bright beam.

The Solar Powered Torch uses a single LED (Light Emitting Diode), this 0.5w light emits a bright beam while having a low energy consumption rate.  The torch comes with three 400 mAh AAA rechargeable batteries. The torch measures 13cm x 3.5cm x 3.5cm (5in x 1.4in x 1.4in) making it a compact torch good for inaccessible places and light for carrying. The docking station for the torch however is a little more bulky, the solar panel on it measures 4cm x 13.5cm (1.6in x 5.3in) meaning it makes the most of any light about.

The Solar Powered Torch’s docking station does need to be positioned somewhere in direct sunlight to charge the torch and the torch needs to be placed within the station. This does mean some forethought is needed to make sure you have a charged torch when you need it, but this should be simply done by always keeping the torch in the docking station when not in use. The docking station and torch are both portable but the docking station is a little inconvenient for transporting around much due to its bulk.

The solar torch is priced at $42.00 USD (about £26) from Brando.

The Ecobulb is a energy saving idea by Seokjae Rhee. The concept bulb takes advantage of the eco friendly credentials of LED bulbs. Working with a remote control the bulb uses these LEDs to produce a light source that is directional.

The Ecobulb concept is that when lighting a room a lot of light is often not needed, only sections of a room are usually ever requiring lighting at any time. The bulb uses LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) in a 6 compartmental bulb design. The bulb has 6 distinct and separate areas to it which can be controlled with the Ecobulb’s remote control to turn any of these sections on or control the brightness of a section.

LED bulbs have many advantages over the more commonly used energy saving bulb the CFL ( Compact Florescent Light/lamp). The life span of a LED bulb is longer than that of a CFL. CFLs also cause a problem when it comes to disposing of them due to them containing mercury (though this is a trace amount). The LED bulb does not have any such issues while working with approximately the same energy efficiency. The LED bulbs should also turn on straight away without the warm up time that CFLs need.

The Ecobulbs concept then also contributes to less electricity usage as only sections of the light are used at once. There is no light wastage, no light being used to illuminate areas of a room not in use. This, coupled with the brightness control, means that the one light bulb can then take the place of many different light functions, from a small pool of soft light like that of a lamp to a brightly lit room all at the push of a button. One problem may be finding the button to do this, especially if there is a frequent need to change the sections of light as remote controls do often go missing.

The Spider is a touchlight by Powerplus. Working from solar power the touchlight can be placed in the sun to charge then simply pressed to activate the light when needed.

This lightweight light can be placed on any smooth surface, though ideally it is best placed on glass that faces the sun. This is because the Spider touchlight has an integrated solar panel located on the back of the device. This solar panel powers its internal rechargeable Ni-MH battery while in direct sunlight, the electricity is then used to power the 3 LED lights. The light is activated by pressing it on and another press to turn it back off again. The LED lights have a lifetime of around 10,000 hours meaning this small light will last a long time while providing a powerful light source that comes from an eco friendly source.

The light measures 7cm (2.7in) in diameter and has 3 sucker pad feet with which it can be affixed to any smooth surface. These feet mean it is easily moved to where it is needed at any time, it can be left to charge through the day then moved to a dark corner later on, or moved from the house to a caravan for a holiday.

Using wind up technology, Mitaki-Japan have produced this FM/Weather Radio which has a LED flashlight built into it. With this one item you can listen to the radio, weather warnings, and be able to light your way.

The FM/Weather Radio comes with an earphone jack, a recharge jack and cord for mobile phones, and a wrist strap. It does have a DC output socket though it does not come with a DC cord. To charge the radio you wind it up using the handle on the side. From 1 minute of winding the radio you get 30 minutes of it powering the LED torch, 10 minutes of it powering the radio or 3 minutes of it powering the weather warning alert.

As this radio works on wind up technology there is no need to go to great lengths of preparation to use it, such as making sure you have charged batteries handy, or have remembered to leave it out in direct sunlight to charge though solar panels. As soon as you need any part of it then its ready to go as soon as you crank the handle. Your arm provides the energy that is converted into electricity to power the device.
