The Paperfix Stapleless Stapler is a great way to bind together small amounts of paperwork without the need for staples or paperclips. This helps to reduce the amount of metal being processed for use in staples and other such bindings.

The Paperfix Stapleless Stapler is able to safely fix around 4 sheets of paper together. It achieves this through a system of cutting and folding which causes the sheets of paper to interlock. By applying pressure to the device, just as you would a normal stapler or hole punch, the sheets of paper become interlocked. The negatives though are that only a limited amount of paper can be secured together, 6 pages would really be a maximum. Also as they can come apart more easily there will be times when the system simply is not secure enough. However, as these circumstances are usually in the minority it seems worthwhile having one of these alongside a regular stapler to help you cut down on your staple usage at the very least.

The Solar Pool Heater by Hammacher Schlemmer is a simple device to heat the water of an above ground pool without incurring any energy bill costs.

The Solar Pool Heater is designed to be attached to a pump-operated filtering system, it takes the water from this and passes it through its 6 meters (20 feet) of coiled black piping. This piping is housed into the device to make the heater only measure 58.5 cm x 58.5 cm x 25.5 cm (23 in. x 23 in. x 10 in.). It is this black piping that heats the water, exposed to the sun this piping heats up in the sunlight, warming the water that is passing through it effectively. this warmed water is then fed back into your pool.

Obviously this type of heating will not make a drastic change in temperature of a pool, but it will help take away the chill. It is estimated that the pool heating system increases the temperature of a 6,000 gallon (2271 liter) pool by 5º F (around 3º C) in 10 days. Up to 4 of these heaters can be connected to the one pool at once to speed up the heating process. By only using the heat from the sun there is no long tern running costs for this heater, though obviously it will be ineffective on cold cloudy days.

The Compactor Trash Can (Smash Can) by Reduce is a great way to compact your household waste cleanly and effectively. By compacting garbage down you will save on bin bags and be able to fit a lot more into your bins.

The Compactor Trash Can has a specially designed lid that you push down on once the trash can (or bin) is full. This compacts the garbage within the can without you having to touch it at all, as it is all safely sealed away, nor will you get a gust of garbage gas in your face. This means any harmful germs or bacteria are kept away from you while your trash is condensed allowing you to use half as many bin bags as before, helping to reduce costs to you and to reduce the amount of plastic bags in landfills.

My one concern for this from an environmental point is the impression that it reduces garbage going to landfill, it does not, it certainly reduces the amount of bags, but the actual amount of garbage is unchanged. Nor does it reduce the amount of space taken in landfill as the garbage is compressed first when placed into a garbage truck and often again before reaching landfill. It does help reduce the amount of plastic bags in landfills, helps to keep your rubbish safely away from you when compacting it, is a safer bin around small children, and by using less bags it can help quicken refuse collection.

This lightweight jacket is made from recycled materials. Featuring ‘Tux’ the linux penguin used as the logo for Linux it is bound to appeal to all open source eco enthusiasts.

The Linux logo of ‘Tux’ the penguin is recognisable to all (or at least all that matter to those who know him!) and the ideals of open source software mesh well with being eco-friendly. The jacket comes in sizes ranging from small to large for men (which equates to medium to extra large in women) and is made from a polyester that has been fabricated from 100% recycled materials.

The USBCELL is a rechargeable AA battery by Moixa. The battery is designed to fit into a USB port and to charge through it.  These batteries offer a freedom from the need to have a battery charger to be able to recharge a battery.

The USBCELL is a Ni-MH (Nickel-metal Hydride) battery. Due to this they can be charged up even when the battery has not been fully discharged, without affecting the lifetime of the battery. The USBCELL battery is a 1.2v 1300mAh AA battery. When charging these batteries in a USB port they should take around 5 hours to  reach 90% fully charged, of course this may be achieved in less time if the battery was not fully discharged first.

These rechargeable batteries offer more freedom than average rechargeable batteries which require a battery charger, as these can be charged through USB ports. USB ports can be found on most laptops and computers. The USBCELL battery can then be charged while you are out and about from your laptops power.

The USBCELL batteries  can also be charged through a Ni-MH battery charger. To charge them through a USB port you just flip down the lid covering the USB plug which is located at the positive end of the battery. When the USBCELL is plugged in a small green light will turn on near the USB plug part of the battery to show that the battery is charging.

The USBCELL batteries cost around £10 for a pair in the UK, or around $18 in the US.

The Solar Powered Dragonflys made by Tamiya allow you to see realistic movements of dragonfly wings up close. They come as a model kit to be constructed, to help educate about solar power through the fun of construction.

The model comprises of two dragonfly models with textured wing details that flap their wings in a way that imitates how actual dragonflys’ move their wings. A motor that is powered by a solar battery (0.5V-1200mA) creates the motion in the models by using a cam and crank mechanism to produce the motion in the dragonflys wings. The solar panel on the model can be adjusted to different angles. This allows more freedom in placing the model and it can be positioned with more thought going to the aesthetics. Lighting though is very important as without direct light on the panel the dragonflys’ wings will move sluggishly or not move at all.

The dragonfly models and the base are made out of plastic, these parts come on sprues to be carefully snapped off and screwed together.  For better results it would be best to use a hobby knife to cut the parts off. A Philips screwdriver is required to screw the parts of the model together, no glue should be required. Due to really requiring the parts to be cut away it is best that any child constructing this model has adult supervision.

This conceptual mobile phone designed by Daizi Zheng aims to replace conventional mobile batteries with an eco friendly version. It was designed for Nokia as a phone battery that is cheaper to produce, uses less resources in its production and its life time of use, while also being able to be disposed of in an environmental manner.

The proposition is that it is possible to power a phone from a carbohydrate, in this case sugar which can be found in high levels in many drinks. The interaction of enzymes with the carbohydrate generates power through an electrochemical reaction. The Eco Friendly Mobile Phone should only produce oxygen and water, as a byproduct of the reaction, which can then be poured out of the battery and down a drain once the phone battery has finally run out of charge. It is hoped that charging a phone this way would give a longer lasting charge time, predicted to be 3 to 4 times the length of charging a normal mobile battery. The designer hopes that this type of battery would be fully biodegradable.

Mobile phones normally run from a lithium battery. It is well documented that producing these batteries, charging them and then disposing of them produces quite a high quantity of pollution into the environment. Unfortunately the manufacturing of many drinks have their own negative environmental impact, from the production of the drink to the issues that arise from the drinks bottles and cans especially when these are not recycled.

By using left over bits of drink the impact is minimized to some extent. This design may well run from sugar dissolved in water which would also lessen the impact somewhat. The problem of disposing lithium batteries is rather serious, coupled with charging the battery from mains power for its life then the negative impact of a conventional lithium phone battery is quite high. Though there are a few unconsidered issues with this ‘eco friendly’ battery it is certainly a step in the right direction.

The Flexy reminds you of the simple joy cardboard can bring.  Shaped and pieced together from cardboard, it is designed to work like the famous metal slinky.

Made out of recycled materials this biodegradable toy is said to do all that its metal counterpart can, but with the obvious benefit of decomposing when everyone has finally had enough.  The Flexy will then happily ‘walk’ down your stairs (though wont make that jingle jangle slinky does) and comes with instructions to make it move in many different ways from flinging to a rippling rainbow, it can even be moved into place to create many different sculptures.

The Flexy is not quite as compact as its metal counterpart measuring  11.5cm x 10cm x 7.5cm (4.5in x 4in x 3in) closed up and 25.5cm x 10cm x 7.5cm (10in x 4in x 3in) opened out fully, though it should hopefully not tangle up like a metal spring likes to do.  Though it claims to do all its metal counterpart can do I am not sure how well it could be used in science classrooms to show easily the difference between light waves and sound waves, but it is certainly a more environmentally friendly way of laughing at something falling down the stairs!
