The D1 PC by Aleutia is a extremely small and energy efficient computer. The D1 compacts all the normal features of a PC into one tiny quiet case.

The Aleutia D1 is under half the size of most other SFF PCs (Small Form Factor Personal Computers) Aleutia claim, measuring only 26.8cm x 31.8cm x 7cm (10.55in x 12.52in x 2.75in) and weighing only 1.8Kg (though Aleutia do also claim it weighs 2.4Kg) compared to other SFF PCs which can weigh around 8Kg. The PC though is not lacking in ability, the D1 comes with an Intel dual core 1.66GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 40GB SATA-II HDD, DVD-RW drive  and many other components that go into making this a suitable PC for office or light home use. The D1 comes with the Ubuntu Linux 9.10 OS as standard but has been tested to be fully compatible with the current Microsoft OSs from Windows XP to Windows 7.

By using energy efficient processors and combining them with laptop components like the DVD-RW drive, the D1 features a low power consumption, using only 26w (though Aleutia also claim it uses 34w, either way an exceptionally low power drain) which could mean the D1 uses only 25% of the energy of other SFF PCs. Because of the energy efficient processors, the D1 also produces less heat, meaning it requires only a small fan to cool the system. The smaller fan causes less sound than conventional desktops, and can only be heard whirring when your ears are very close to it.

The USBCELL is a rechargeable AA battery by Moixa. The battery is designed to fit into a USB port and to charge through it.  These batteries offer a freedom from the need to have a battery charger to be able to recharge a battery.

The USBCELL is a Ni-MH (Nickel-metal Hydride) battery. Due to this they can be charged up even when the battery has not been fully discharged, without affecting the lifetime of the battery. The USBCELL battery is a 1.2v 1300mAh AA battery. When charging these batteries in a USB port they should take around 5 hours to  reach 90% fully charged, of course this may be achieved in less time if the battery was not fully discharged first.

These rechargeable batteries offer more freedom than average rechargeable batteries which require a battery charger, as these can be charged through USB ports. USB ports can be found on most laptops and computers. The USBCELL battery can then be charged while you are out and about from your laptops power.

The USBCELL batteries  can also be charged through a Ni-MH battery charger. To charge them through a USB port you just flip down the lid covering the USB plug which is located at the positive end of the battery. When the USBCELL is plugged in a small green light will turn on near the USB plug part of the battery to show that the battery is charging.

The USBCELL batteries cost around £10 for a pair in the UK, or around $18 in the US.

We’ve yet to see a wide range of eco-friendly gadgets hitting our offices yet, so when the need to print something important comes along, it’s more economical to use a printing service. Thankfully some environmentally conscious printing companies are starting to pop up. These printing services can print business cards, custom stickers, custom postcards, custom greeting cards, posters as well as brochure printing. So what’s so good about eco-friendly printing technology?

Well it’s hardly news that green printing involves using 100% recycled paper products. Decent recycled paper tends to be more expensive, as poor quality recycled paper will just not take the printing inks correctly. Just think how much waste paper your office disposes of each day? So surely using completely recycled paper is a good thing.

However, something that is worth of a note is that PSPrint use a type of ink called soy inks. Soy inks are considerably more biodegradable compared to traditional petroleum-based inks. Traditional inks are typical emit fewer VOCs (volatile organic compounds) too. If you’re not sure what VOCs are, just think how much paint stinks. Those fumes are VOCs. Some printed paper can be difficult to recycle, and that paper typically uses traditional ink compounds. Therefore paper printed with soy inks tends to be easier to recycle when the printed material reaches the end of its useful life.
