The Solar Powered Lunar Car is a complex model that will move across a flat surface once assembled correctly. The model comes in multiple parts to construct which helps educate children on a multitude of things, like gear box operation, motor operation and the potential of solar power.

The Solar Powered Lunar Car Kit is constructed from balsa wood pieces which come on a pre cut board, needing to be pressed out and pieced together. The kit contains the parts needed for making the model work and complex instructions. The model is not simple to construct but has detailed instructions with illustrations to help you arrange over 100 parts into a working model. Through making the model you can learn about how motors and automatic transmissions work, how a gear box is constructed and how it operates, how the wiring goes together to connect everything and how the solar energy is taken and converted into electrical energy that the motor can use to operate the model.

The Solar Powered Lunar Car is a great educational model, helping children to learn through play on a multitude of areas. Because of its complexity though adult assistance will be required, also to construct the model you will need a screwdriver, long nose pliers, a sharp knife and sandpaper to help smooth the pieces. This Solar Powered Desk Fan made by Solar Technology has been crafted from perspex. The fan takes advantage of even a small amount of light from a desk lamp to turn its blades and keep you cool.

The Solar Powered Desk Fan is delivered in kit form, from pieces of laser cut perspex that can be easily slotted together by following the instructions provided.  The solar panel has been placed on the back of the fan, and though some thought should be used concerning the placement of the solar panel to take advantage of any natural or artificial light source, it is important to place it where you will benefit from the fans breeze. The solar panel is large enough to take advantage of even a relatively weak artificial light so is suitable for any office.

The desk fan is suitable for children aged 6+. It does make a decent learning aid to show the abilities of solar power, be it from natural daylight or from a desk lamp. The child will benefit from constructing the fan, learning how the parts go together and visually experiencing how effectively light energy is converted into electrical power to turn the fan blades.  The advantage to this device is that once children are bored of it, it can be ‘recycled’ into a handy device for any desk worker.

This Solar Powered Window Alarm by Smart Solar is an easy to install system to add extra security to your home without incurring any long term running costs.

The Solar Powered Window Alarm can be placed anywhere, though obviously it is best placed somewhere to take maximum possible benefit of the daylight there. Designed to be mounted onto the window to power itself through its built in solar panels, this alarm comes with sensors that can be placed up to 60cm away from the main unit due to the adjustable wire it is attached to. The solar energy is stored in a Li-on rechargeable battery supplied.

The Window Alarm produces an alarm noise at 6.8 khz which should easily wake you up should anyone open an alarmed window and trigger it. The only concerns would be its usefulness, as if a window is broken rather than opened it should not produce a sound. Additionally, it would appear that there is no way to tell how much power is stored in the alarm or for how long the charge will run. This leads to some concerns on if it would last a whole night, especially in the long nights of winter where the daylight can also be diminished for days.

The Solar Powered Clip Watch is a concept design by Mac Funamizu. The clip watch is meant to look like a button to help it not look out of place on any outer garment or bag. The time is displayed on the screen briefly once the screen has been pressed.

The Industrial Designer Mac Funamizu felt this concept dealt with the issue of getting your hands out of your pockets, or even pulling back gloves and layers of sleeves to see the time on a normal watch. By having the watch on outer garments, like your coat, the time would just be a simple press away. Of course you will need to press the watch face to display the time, which could still get your hands cold! Many just use their mobile phone to display the time, but with the rise in popularity in touch screens, which often do not respond well to operation by gloved fingers, this clip watch could be an excellent solution.

Because the clip watch has been designed to go on the outer layers of clothes it can make use of the light around it at all times, instead of being hidden away under sleeves and such like. A solar panel is part of the screen, taking in the light and using it to power the watch, so no issues with running out of power or replacing batteries. The watch screen only displays the time for a few seconds when pressed, as this is usually all that is needed when checking the time. This helps to conserve energy while helping the illusion that the watch is just another button.

This Solar Powered Racer is a great way to educate children through play. It effectively demonstrates the abilities of solar panels in converting sunlight into electrical energy, this energy is then used to power a motor which causes the racer to race along. This Solar Powered Bicycle Odometer features 11 different function settings allowing you to keep track of everything from current speed to fastest speed, the distance of the trip to the calories burnt on the trip. Powered by a small solar panel the odometer will last throughout any length of trip.

The Solar Powered Bicycle LCD Odometer has three buttons with which to operate it, these are SET, MODE and RESET. These allow you to keep track of an array of functions, though sometimes switching between functions with the mode button may take a while as there are 11 of them. The more notable functions are current speed, shown as SPD when on that mode, odometer (total distance) shown as mode ODO, DIS shows the trip distance, MXS shows you the maximum speed achieved, while AVS shows you the average speed achieved on the journey.

These speed settings can be viewed in either km/h or m/h (kilometers per hour or miles per hour). The odometer also has a mode to show you the time with its CLK mode, which can display the time in either a 12 hour or 24 hour format. There are settings to also show calorie consumption, to show riding time or to set an alert .

The Solar Powered Bicycle Odometer measures  7.5cm  x 5cm x 1.4cm (3in x 2in x 0.6in) making it small and compact. The odometer is also relatively light weighing only 144g and comes with all the fixtures and fittings needed to secure it onto the bicycle and allow it to operate.

Though the odometer does have a solar panel it is relatively small, but the unit can be powered from a single 3V CR2032 battery. Though the unit will gain solar power when out and in use, it may have problems at the start of a journey if the bicycle is stored indoors or under cover away from a direct light source. Alternatively the odometer could be placed in a bright spot when the bicycle is not in use.

The Lucet is the name given to this solar powered indoor light design. The light comprises three LED lights surrounding one battery charging area that has a solar panel on the back. The device can then be placed onto windows to charge from the sunlight during the day and illuminate the room at night. The concept is similar to the Spider Solar-Powered Light by Powerplus.

This concept, designed by Rui Palma, could be placed in groups to form a pattern on a window. In actuality many of these Lucets may be needed to provide sufficient light for them to be considered the main light source of a room, though one or two should be fine for a lower ‘mood’ light or in addition to other lighting.

The three LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) are powered from a solar panel on the reverse of the device, this energy charges the batteries which will be two AAA batteries. This may take quite some charging, as the current proposed area for the solar panel is relativly small. Fortunately LEDs require low electricity amounts to produce a strong light so the power of two batteries can be shared between all three lights without to many problems. This may mean the Lucet will not last that long into the evening and will certainly have a shortened time of  use on cloudy days when less charge is picked up due to the lower intensity of the sunlight.

The Lightcap 300 combines a water bottle with a solar powered LED light. This portable device allows you to store liquids within it, or seal away documents and other such items in a watertight container, while still being able to be used as a powerful light.

The Lightcap300 has been designed by Sollight for activities such as camping, where weight is an issue. By combining a water bottle and light together there is less weight to carry and due to the light charging from a solar panel the device is ideal for taking out into the wilderness without worry of losing power or running out of batteries.

The lid of the Lightcap300 comprises of a solar panel on the outside of the lid and 4 white LEDs on the inside of the lid. By placing the bottle, or even just its lid, in sunlight the device will charge. It will provide around 8 hours of illumination when fully charged. The Lightcap300  is turned on by a recessed switch and also has a light sensor which turns the lantern off to prevent draining the battery during daylight hours.

The Lightcap 300 can hold 1 litre of fluid and has a diameter of 10.2cm x 21.6cm  (4in x 8.5in). The bottle has a wide mouth opening to aid drinking and cleaning, this also makes it easier to store valuables or items like a first aid kit within it and get them out easily. The Lightcap300 weighs only 275g (9.7 oz) for bottle and cap together when empty. The bottle comes with built in hanging loops to allow you to hang it by a strap or cord.

The Lightcap is available for $29.99 with free shipping, and is available in either red or black.

The Pico by Freeloader is a portable solar powered charger designed to charge mobile phones, iPods, GPS systems, and most other portable electronic devices. The Pico has advanced solar panel and battery technology to help provide a quick charging time for the devices internal battery and a quick time for it to deliver the power to the portable electronic device connected to it.

The Pico is quite compact measuring 10.5cm x 4.5cm x 1.2cm (4.1in x 1.8in x 0.5in) and has a light weight of 49g. The device has been designed to be portable to allow charging of other portable electronic devices whenever and where-ever needed, be it stranded on an island or at home.

The Pico comes with a connector for Sony Ericsson phones, a Mini USB connector for smart phones, PDAs, GPSs, Blackberrys etc, a small tip Nokia connector, and Samsung connector. More connectors for other portable electronic devices can be brought in addition to this.

The solar panel is comprised of 75mA crystalline solar cells which charge the 800mAh  Li-ion battery within the device. The battery takes around 10 hours to fully charge when empty and has been designed to charge in all daylight conditions. The Pico does come with a USB cable to allow you to charge it from a USB port if needed, meaning that you could then charge it from your laptop or computer if you need power quickly. It takes only 3 hours to fully charge the device from empty by USB.

With a full battery, the Pico Freeloader should be able to power portable electronic devices in about 30 minutes. This should then provide a mobile phone with around 35 hours of power, an iPod with around 14 hours of power and a GPS system with around 1 1/2 hours of power. The Pico has indication lights built in which show how much charge is left within the battery and also has a solar charge indicator to help find the best position to charge it in.

The Solar LED Torch And Worklight has been designed by Proteam for use outdoors or in any outside building such as a shed or garage. The system is designed so the unit is left where needed to provide light, from either a fixed point or as a portable torch, while the solar panel is mounted on a wall or roof to take advantage of the maximum amount of sunlight/daylight.

The Solar LED Torch And Worklight comprises a compact amorphous solar cell measuring 11cm x 2.5cm x 15cm (4.3in x 1in x 5.9in) that is designed to be wall mounted (though may be placed onto a low area of roof of a shed), and a light/torch which comes with a charging bracket which is 6cm x 23.5cm (2.4in x 9.3in). The light has been designed to be used either in its charging bracket as a fixed light, or to be removed and used as a torch. To aid this the light has 10 LEDs positioned to provide a fixed light and a further 3 positioned for use as a conventional torch light.

The solar panel charges the 3  600mAh AAA  Ni-MH rechargeable batteries within the light when the light is in the charging bracket. If the light is being used as a torch you will need to remember to place it back into the charging bracket to guarantee the torch will provide you with light. When fully charged the light should provide you with 5 hours of lighting either from the fixed light or from the torch light.

The Solar LED Torch And Worklight also comes with 3 metres of cable to allow you to place the solar panel in an ideal spot for providing sufficient sunlight/daylight for charging while placing the charging bracket and light in a position required for ease of use. The light has a dim LED to illuminate the on/off switch to aid using the device in dark locations.
