Philips has recently announced its 42″ 1080p resolution flat-panel Eco TV, loaded with energy-saving features and designed with the environment in mind. Using eco-friendly technology, the Eco TV uses around 75 Watts, compared to other flat-screen TVs which consume around 100W+. Philips has eliminated any lead from the product and has minimized the use of mercury to the absolute minimum. Even the box is made from recycled cardboard!

The lower energy consumption of the 42PFL5603D model is due to three significant new features that limit the light output of the flat panel TV. Firstly there’s the backlight dimming technology that will reduce the light output in dark or black scenes. This improves the quality of darker scenes as well as less energy use. The TV also has a sensor that detects background light levels, resulting in lower backlight intensity when the room is darker. And finally, there is a user-selectable light setting that allows the viewer to manually control the backlight intensity.

Philips has also considered the standby current, and have managed to keep the standby power usage to just 0.15W.
