The vast majority of wind-up torches and lanterns are actually very good, so you can’t go far wrong. If you’re traveling in a country with unreliable sunlight, then we recommend the wind-up lights rather than the solar-powered lights.

Eco torches contain a rechargeable battery which is charged up either via a solar panel, or by a dynamo (by turning a hand-crank or a handle). So there’s no need to keep spare batteries at all.
This not only saves you a fortune in batteries, but also removes the need for batteries to be recycled. We do recommend that you recycle all batteries anyway, but if there are no batteries to recycle, that’s even better!
Solar-Powered Torches and Lanterns
Leaving a torch or lantern in the sun can be very practical if you’re very busy. Then when you need some light, your lantern or torch is full charged ready to be used. Using solar power, your light will take several hours to charge up (compared to wind-up torches that take just minutes to charge up).
You can just leave the torch in the sunlight at home or in the car, so that the torch is constantly trickle-charging. Then you’ll find the torch is ready for use in emergencies. Therefore solar-powered torches and lanterns are perfect for occasional use.
Hand-Powered Torches and Lanterns
Using hand-power means that you can use your light both at night time and during the day. Therefore if the rechargeable battery runs out, you can just wind up the torch again to get some more light. This is ideal for countries with unreliable sunlight.
With wind-up torches, you get an impressive amount of light from a reasonably short amount of effort. Often, you’ll get around 30 to 60 minutes of light from 1 minute of hand-power! This makes hand-powered torches and lanterns perfect for frequent use.
Multi-Function Torches and Lanterns
Some of the eco torches and lanterns come with an FM radio, phone chargers, and other features. These extra features make the gadget more useful, but tend to make torches a little impractical to carry easily. However, there’s no real impact for lanterns, as you tend not to hold them constantly. The extra features are very much a personal preference based on how you intend to use your eco-friendly torch or lantern.
