The Sunny Bags are the creations of Stefan Ponsold, who runs a company called SunnyBag based in Austria. The bags are a dark brown or black cowskin-leather, designed as a shoulder-bag for laptops and paperwork. The unique aspect of this bag is that it includes a 3 Watt solar panel with a 1600mAh LI-Ion battery pack. The high power solar panel allows the internal battery to be charged, even with cloudy and overcast days.

The Sunny Bags come with a range of adaptors to charge your portable gadgets, including the iPhone, iPod, most mobile phone models and USB. With the battery, the bag weighs approximately 1.4kg (or 3lb) and measures 42cm x 32cm x 8cm. The Business Pro model of the bags are able to comfortably house a 15.4″ laptop computer.

Prices start at €165.83 plus shipping fees. SunnyBag will happily ship their bags to the EU and internationally.

Juice Bag Solar Beach Tote

The Juice Bag Solar Beach Tote is essentially a reusable tote-based bag with a large solar film panel on the side of it. The juice bag has a universal female car charger socket so that you can connect your devices to charge them up. The solar panel outputs a maximum current of 325mA at 12V, which will charge most devices in 1 to 4 hours.

The solar panel itself measures 300mm x 300mm (12″ x 12″), and the bag measures 480mm x 380mm x 280mm (19″ wide x 15″ high x 11″ deep). Inside the bag is a special pocket which can be used to hold small gadgets such as mobile phones and PDAs. The bag has been designed to be very robust, with heavy duty cotton webbing handles, a waterproof support for the bottom of the bag and a specially designed frame too.

I would have preferred to see a USB socket rather than the car charger socket, as that’s much smaller. However, that would involve some electronics to regulate the voltage so that your gadgets don’t blow up! What’s interesting is that the Reware SolarSistem solar panel is removable, meaning you don’t need to use it specifically with your bag.

The bags are pretty pricey at $249.99, but that’s because the solar film panels are still expensive to make, and are only just coming down in price. The manufacturer Reware has a whole range of solar panel bags which are worth checking out.

Profolio Solar Bag – Charging On The Move

The Profolio Solar Bag is an example of a green gadget, one of many solar-enabled clothing products that are reaching the market. The solar attaché bag has room for a 17inch laptop and a variety of gadgets using its many internal pockets. The solar panel can produce up to 6.3Watts of electricity to charge up your devices, but strangely is no good for charging your laptop!

The manufacturers claim that the solar panel needs to be four times larger to be able to power a laptop. I don’t think we’ll see solar-powered laptop charging bags for a while then, at least until we’ve got more efficient solar cells. The solar bag will, however, charge a number of small gadgets, such as PDAs, games consoles, mobile phones, digital cameras, MP3 players or simply rechargeable batteries.

The bag is waterproof, hard wearing, strong and practical. I look forward to seeing future models that include a rolled up solar cell for charging a laptop too! The Profolio Solar Bag is currently available for sale for just under $300.
