Puzzle Bamboo Wooden Laptop Stand

The Puzzle Bamboo Laptop Stand allows you to use a laptop at a better height when at a desk. The stand raises the laptop to eye level while offering great ventilation to the base of the laptop to prevent overheating.

The Puzzle laptop stand is made from bamboo wood. The shape of the stand was envisioned to use the least amount of material as possible, to allow it to be made out of the small left over pieces of bamboo from making larger items. The design allows the two parts of the stand to be interlocked to create an easily transported and flat item that should fit into any good laptop bag without a problem. This allows the stand to be taken wherever you need it, to offer you a better height of laptop use when you are out and about without adding too much extra weight or inconvenience.

The Puzzle Laptop Stand is made from bamboo, there are many advantages of this environmentally. Bamboo grows very quickly so makes a good renewable wood alternative. Being a type of grass, bamboo takes carbon dioxide in to grow like all plants, trapping it within itself to only be released when the material is burned. For the stand the maker takes bamboo from the manufacturer Moso who try to operate in an eco-friendly manner, for example they use a glue with low formaldehyde.

As the stand comes in two separate pieces it can be used by a wide range of sizes of laptops by simply positioning the stands at the distance apart required. This separate nature does mean the stands can be used for more than just as a laptop stand, the ends can be used as book ends, or even as heat mats for pans.

Macally Sustainable Bamboo Laptop Stand

Macally has launched some sustainable bamboo cooling stands for laptops. The stands are designed to go onto your desk, with the laptop on top of the stand. The stand includes two USB-powered 2.5″ (5cm) fans to help dissipate heat away from your laptop. There are two models, the EcoFan (fixed height) and EcoFanPro (adjustable height).

By improving the loss of heat from your laptop, you actually save energy as your laptop doesn’t need to work so hard to disipate heat. The stands increase the air flow around the laptop, meaning the internal laptop fan doesn’t need to work so hard. You could even just unplug the USB fans and just use the stand on its own.

All of the stands are available from Amazon in both the UK and the US.

Sustainable and Professional Bamboo Briefcase

The Bamboo Briefcase is an attractive alternative to the boring leather or plastic attaché briefcase. Using a type of bamboo called Moso bamboo, which is sustainably grown in the highlands of central China, the bamboo briefcase is inherently stronger than steel. Moso bamboo has a tensile strength of 28,000 lbs per square inch, which is 5,000lbs more than that of steel! Strong stuff!

The briefcase only weighs 5.5lbs (2.5kg), giving you the strength without the additional weight. The bamboo is naturally water-resistant, meaning no chemicals are needed to waterproof the case. The interior of the briefcase is lined with a soft suede, with the usual two file pockets, three penholders, and a mobile phone holder. The case is secured using two combination locks, each with 3 combination dials.

Certainly more expensive than most other briefcases, however, it will certainly stand out in any busy city. The bamboo case is available for $199.95.

Solar-Powered Bamboo Doll House

Most of the eco toys that I’ve reviewed probably have more appeal to the boys than the girls, simply because boys prefer gadgets a bit more than girls do. However, here’s a toy aimed a little more towards girls, namely a Solar-Powered Bamboo Doll House. The doll house is made from sustainable fast-growing bamboo, which has been treated with a light water-based stain and then polished with natural beeswax.

The large solar panel housed in the roof collects enough energy to power 5 LEDs, of which 3 are in the media room, and one in each of two rooms on the first floor. The whole house features 9 different rooms including a spiral staircase. All of the furniture has been made of bamboo too.

The furnishings include beds, sofas, bookshelves, tables, and chairs, pillows, rugs, and childrens’ toys. However, no dolls are included. The dolls house is designed for children aged 3 years or older. The dolls house is available from November 2009 and is priced at $499.

Asus Bamboo Series Laptop PC

Bamboo is becoming an increasingly popular material for use in green gadgets, and the Asus Bamboo Series Laptops are no exceptions. However, the use of the sustainable bamboo is only one of the two significant features of this laptop.

The user-configurable Super Hybrid Engine feature allows users to extend the battery life by between 35% and 70% as compared to laptop computers with the same specifications and without this eco friendly technology. What’s impressive is that the increased battery life still results in an improved system performance increase of 23%! Essentially the system monitors the power requirements of the laptop components and dynamically adjusts the power levels in real time.

The ultra slim ASUS Bamboo Series laptop is available in two versions; a 12.1″ and 11.1″ model weight 1.57kg and 1.25kg respectively. Both are fitted with Intel Core2 Duo processors and are fitted with DDRII RAM. You might want to compare cheap laptops with these specs, as they seem no different to normal laptops… apart from the eco-aspects.

The ASUS Bamboo series were designed whilst following the strict RoHS and WEEE directives. ASUS probably sell the laptop with recycled and recyclable packaging. Everyone else is. I doubt that the new skin features in any of the Asus patents, as using bamboo as part of a computer case is also becoming increasingly common.

Bamboo Audioengine A5N iPod Speaker System

The Audioengine A5N Speaker System is a high-end music speaker product that allows you to listen to your music from your iPod, MP3 player, Airport Express, LCD TVs, DVD players, PDAs, laptops and more. What’s interesting about this product from an eco perspective is that it uses eco friendly technology, highly sustainable bamboo as part of the material, is completely lead-free, highly energy efficient and packaged in minimal but recyclable packaging.

The Audioengine A5N speaker unit is essentially an audio amplifier with a built-in speaker and sub woofer system. The speakers use bamboo as a raw material to remove the need for slow-growing hardwoods or nasty chemical varnishes and finishes. The acoustic properties of bamboo are being exploited to create a premium quality product that still does it’s bit for the environment too.

Energy Efficient and Eco-Friendly Hard Drive

A company called fabrik has announced the release of an energy efficient green gadget, an external hard drive utilising a low power hard disk and a case made from recycled materials. The drive has no noisy fans (which also cuts down on power consumption), and the case is made using recycled aluminium to efficiently dissipate the heat. The case also features some fancy sustainable bamboo trim to give the drive a natural and organic look.

The hard drive is entirely useful too, coming in a 500GB model, compatible with both Windows and Mac and using Turbo USB 2.0 to make it up to 25% faster than conventional USB 2.0. On top of all that, the drive comes with completely eco-friendly packaging that can be recycled (i.e. no plastic!). Most external hard drives seem to come with tonnes of packaging, so any reduction in plastic packaging is great.

A neat looking drive, designed from the start with the environment in mind and energy efficient. Top stuff!
