Each bicycle goes through a three layer powder coating paint process which allows the bikes to have amazingly durable paintwork which causes minimal amounts of residue. Both bikes use a Shimano dynamo hub to power the Busch & Muller front and rear LED lights, this helps to ensure that you can always have your lights on when cycling without any concerns over replacing batteries.

The tires used for the bikes are high-end Continental TopContact puncture resistant tyres which feature a reflective strip. The durability of these tyres ensures that you will rarely need to replace them helping to save on the quantity of rubber that may have gone to landfill during the life of the bike. Due to the use of internal gears, the bikes require far less maintenance than a ‘traditional’ bike, maybe once a year rather than once a month. This leads to less need for cleaning agents and grease helping to save costs and help reduce the amount of chemicals released into the environment.

This fine eye for greener details is also shown in the choice of battery, the Panasonic batteries for the bikes use Lithium Manganese cells. These batteries allow a high-performance power output while being a better for the environment, as when it comes to disposal these batteries are easier to recycle than batteries that use NiCad, NiMH or even worse, lead-acid. Each bike also includes a Pletscher EasyFix rear carrier with spring hinges, this provides you with the ability to even attach a baby seat to the bike, helpful to those who for instance want to encourage their children to cycle to school, or for trips out to the park or in the countryside.

The Spencer Electric Bike is an electric bike designed to appeal to commuters due to its sleek style. The Spencer has a Selle Royal gel comfort saddle to help ensure you ride in comfort. One of the major factors for this models appeal is its aesthetics which cause it to have more in common with a traditional cycle than the often ugly conventional electrical bikes. Due to the assistance the motor provides, the bike offers extra safety to your ride when dealing with busy roads, providing confidence whenever you need to pull away at junctions or roundabouts. Both bikes use a high performance Panasonic 250 Watt brushless mid-mounted motor, this coupled with the Panasonic Lithium-ion 26 Volt 10Ah battery allow up to 50 miles of travel per battery charge. The removable battery is thought to cost only around 5p (£0.05) to fully charge, a great saving compared to fuel costs or even public transport. The silently operating motor allows you to pick from 3 different assistance settings, allowing you to control the amount of assistance you would like from the motor during your ride, letting the bike work for you as much or as little as you require.

Spencer Ivy work along side Re-Cycle, helping to collect up unwanted bikes from customers and sending them to Re-Cycle to help change lives in Africa, helping children and workers make journeys that would have previously have taken hours of walking.

G-Bike have two main models of bike. The chopper electric bike is designed to look more like an average bicycle, specifically a chopper. The 500 watt brushless hub motor provides the bike with a top speed of around 20 mph. The lead-acid 12 Ah 48v battery can be fully charged in around 4 to 6 hours and can provide you with up to 31 miles of use. It can handle a gradient of up to 12%.

The standard electric bike has a design that is similar to that of a scooter. The bike uses the same 500w brushless hub motor but uses a 20Ah 48v sealed lead acid battery. This allows it to be able to provide a top speed of 20 mph, and can provide a range of use between 35 and 42 miles depending on conditions. The battery requires 4 – 8 hours to fully charge. Due to the bike having a scooter like design this model has additions like shock absorbers, mirrors and a comfortable seat.

Both models can either be peddled or powered from the electric motor. This allows you to use the motor to help assist you in cycling, to help with hills, or for longer journeys. The motor also allows you to have a burst of increased speed when required, for example to allow you to move out of another vehicles way quickly when needed.

The makers believe it takes only around 20 cents worth of electricity to fully power the bikes batteries helping to make the bikes an affordable way to take trips that are perhaps a bit too far for leg power alone. Ideally it would be best to charge the bikes from a eco-friendly electricity source but for those that lack that ability the electric bikes would still usually be a better alternative for the environment than taking a form of diesel or petrol powered transportation.

This Solar Powered Bicycle Odometer features 11 different function settings allowing you to keep track of everything from current speed to fastest speed, the distance of the trip to the calories burnt on the trip. Powered by a small solar panel the odometer will last throughout any length of trip.

The Solar Powered Bicycle LCD Odometer has three buttons with which to operate it, these are SET, MODE and RESET. These allow you to keep track of an array of functions, though sometimes switching between functions with the mode button may take a while as there are 11 of them. The more notable functions are current speed, shown as SPD when on that mode, odometer (total distance) shown as mode ODO, DIS shows the trip distance, MXS shows you the maximum speed achieved, while AVS shows you the average speed achieved on the journey.

These speed settings can be viewed in either km/h or m/h (kilometers per hour or miles per hour). The odometer also has a mode to show you the time with its CLK mode, which can display the time in either a 12 hour or 24 hour format. There are settings to also show calorie consumption, to show riding time or to set an alert .

The Solar Powered Bicycle Odometer measures  7.5cm  x 5cm x 1.4cm (3in x 2in x 0.6in) making it small and compact. The odometer is also relatively light weighing only 144g and comes with all the fixtures and fittings needed to secure it onto the bicycle and allow it to operate.

Though the odometer does have a solar panel it is relatively small, but the unit can be powered from a single 3V CR2032 battery. Though the unit will gain solar power when out and in use, it may have problems at the start of a journey if the bicycle is stored indoors or under cover away from a direct light source. Alternatively the odometer could be placed in a bright spot when the bicycle is not in use.

The Eco 7 Folding Bike is the concept design of Victor Aleman in Mexico. The Eco 7 is designed to be taken on planes and other transportation where space is a significant problem. Once you reach you destination, you unfold your bike and enjoy the great outdoors!

Pretty much every part of the bike is collapsible, including the main frame, the handle bars, crank, brakes, wheels and chain! Once the different elements have been removed from the frame, they all just fold together. The wheels are particularly clever, made from a total of 6 modules where the spokes fold into the rim of the wheel.

No mention of a prototype is mentioned, so I have no idea how long it would take to assemble and disassemble the bike in practice. I have a feeling that it would take around 15 minutes to take the bike apart. My only concern is that the bike might fall apart if one element of the bike was a little loose. That could be painful if a wheel gave way!

The PUYL is a combined bicycle pump and a hand-powered torch in one, perfect for cyclists everywhere. Designed by industrial designerKai Malte Roever, the pump uses the motion of a magnet through copper coils to generate electricity. This electricity is used to charge a battery which then powers the LED-based light bulb at the end of the pump.

Tyres can be inflated by the pump by using the side-mounted filling hole, since the end of the pump is replaced by the LED light. However, you don’t need a flat tyre in order to charge the light!

The designer has submitted a patent application for the design. A good thing too, as it’s a great blend of technology.

Dahon has announced the BioLogic FreeCharge, which is a bicycle charging kit that connects to any dynamo hub on the market, allowing you to charge your iPod, iPhone, mobile phone and other portable gadgets. The BioLogic FreeCharge uses the energy generated by the bike’s dynamo to charge an internal high-capacity battery. That in tern can be used to charge any USB-charged or powered gadgets.

Since the BioLogic FreeCharge has an internal battery, it avoids the variable voltage from the dynamo from damaging your gadgets. The charger will charge an iPhone in about 3 hours, so the charger is most suited if you do long commutes and long bike rides. It’s not going to be much use to you for the odd 30 minute ride. If you use your iPhone for GPS navigation, an on-board iPhone charger would be particularly useful to cyclists.

The SwissBike LX is a full-size mountain bike with full size 26″ standard wheels. If you’re lucky enough to have lots of snow in your part of the world, the pedal powered snow plough is a great way to exercise and clear the roads too! You can always give the kids the job of clearing the roads, and know that you’re doing them some good!

The snowplough started off as a ride-on lawn mower, and was then adapted on to a hand-made steel frame with parts from an old bicycle. The concept is actually over 10 years old, but it was recently entered into an Innovate or Die contest and caught lots of attention.
