The Eco-Drop is a concept to use the liquids that worms produce from breaking down waste food as a fertilizer for a garden. The concept helps to prevent harmful chemicals entering the food chain and to prevent water contamination. It also helps to recycle a households food waste into an effective fertilizer for a garden.

The Eco-Drop concept has been designed by Seung Kim to help combat the problems of water contamination and to help reduce the amount of household waste going to landfill. The Eco-Drop would work by using worms to break down organic matter waste (like left over food, vegetable peelings etc). Worms would feed on this waste which would be placed with them into the main chamber of the device. As the worms feed, they excrete the digested matter and break the matter down.

This creates a liquid or worm juice that makes a great fertilizer for a garden. Many use worms to help break down their waste for composting currently. The difference with this concept is that it allows you to make use of the rich fertilizing liquid cleanly and easily. The Eco-Drop allows you to use this fluid as a fertilizer when watering a garden through a sprinkler system. The device hopes to take out the effort in using this form of fertilizer, there is no heavy lifting, no hard work like that of covering the ground in more compost and there is no messy extraction of the fluid. To use the worm juice you simply fill a cup like part of the device with the fluid from a nozzle  located at the bottom of the main chamber, the cup part then attaches to the sprinkler part to allow you to water the garden with a worm juice and water mix.

Chemical fertilizers can cause a lot of damage to the ecosystem. The chemicals find their way down into the water table and are washed into drains which can lead into rivers and lakes. The fertilizers change the natural balance of these water habitats and can cause devastating results. The worm juice though is a natural product, that will not effect the ecosystem in the same way. It also helps to reduce down the amount of waste a household would send to landfill and could help to encourage a household to grown some of their own foods. The concept would not require any long term running costs while providing you with a useful resource for your garden.

The CompoSphere is a composting tumbler system which can be rolled around to aerate the  composting materials within to help it to decompose quicker into compost. Because of this it is a good idea to place something absorbent underneath the sphere to soak this up.

The CompoSphere is also useful due to its ability to be rolled as it can be easily moved to where it is required. Instead of collecting branches, leaves or grass cuttings into a wheelbarrow to take to the compost area, you can move it to them. This way you aerate the materials while simply using the item. The CompoSphere can hold 315lt of material, and has grips and tread to help it to be easily maneuvered around even when full. It measures 76 cm x 61 cm x 43 cm (29.9in x 24 in x 16.9 in). The CompoSphere is made out of recycled, UV protected plastic, which adds to its eco-friendly credentials.

The Panasonic RISAIKURA MS-N53 Indoor Composter is an expensive but fast indoor composter that will turn waste into high-grade compost in just hours. Otherwise known as the “recycler”, the platinum-palladium catalyst greatly increases the rate of breakdown of food matter.

Panasonic claims that the compost created by the recycler is better than that you can buy from a shop or garden centre. The composter has different settings, allowing you to create protein-rich compost for plants, or a drier mix better suited for trees. The whole bin can hold up to 2kg of waste at any given time, which is a reasonable amount of compost.

The MS-N53 recycler measures 268 x 365 x 550mm in size, weighs 12kg, and it does require mains electricity in order to work. It’ll be available in late April at a staggering cost of around $881!

Most western societies have a very throw-away nature, one of many reasons our landfill sites are filling up fast. I applaud this use of eco friendly technology, a biodegradable picnic set, as it means it doesn’t matter if the plates, etc get left around in a field after a festival or picnic, as it’s all 100% eco friendly. If you want to keep the kit, you just wash it after use (as water is a vital part of the breakdown process).

The picnic set is made from 100% biodegradable cassava, which is the tropical plant used to make tapioca! (I didn’t know that). Each set comprises cassava plates, bowls and cups. The cutlery is made from wood, and the set contains spoons, forks and knives. It only takes a few weeks for the set to break down, so it won’t break down whilst you’re holding your drink or eating your pudding!

The cost is a little on the pricey side at £14.95. I look forward to the day where all disposable plates and cutlery is 100% biodegradable. If we’re not going to recycle it, we want it to compost at least!
