The Wood Rocket Stove provides you with a safe and efficient wood fueled stove to use for cooking your food while you are outside. The stove is thought to use only 20% of the amount of fuel needed to cook a family meal compared to an open fire, and produces significantly less smoke and fumes.

The Wood Rocket Stove has been created by StoveTec. It is called a rocket stove due to the rocket elbow shape of the stove, where two cylinders meets to form a right angle. The horizontal tube opening allows you to insert your wood to fuel the stove, it also draws in air through this opening, and so preheats the air entering the stove. The vertical opening is where the heat is directed and so where your cooking apparatus is required. Most of the smoke and the gasses produced from burning the wood are directed into the flame of the fire, allowing them to be burnt.

It’s due to the design that the stove is able to cook a family meal using only 20% of the fuel an open fire would require. The more efficient burning of wood means that the fire also produces fewer harmful emissions compared to a standard open fire. With an open wood fire, methane, carbon monoxide, sooty particles of tar (which form visible smoke), and many other hydrocarbons like formaldehyde and benzene are produced. The stove is able to burn most of these away, in lab tests it was found to be 4x better at burning away these harmful gasses.

The Wood Rocket Stove is also significantly more child friendly than an open fire, or many other stoves on the market. Due to its increased insulation the outside of the stove can be touched without causing burns. The stove is sturdy by design, hard to push over and provides a stable platform to cook on. Though open fires have their benefits, many places ban them due to the damage they can cause the ground while these stoves are often allowed in such places as they do not scorch the grass beneath them with standard use.

The Wood Rocket Stove is perfect for those who like to cook with wood outdoors, be it in your back garden or when out camping or even caravaning. The stove boasts significant efficiency in wood burning and so helps reduce the amount of harmful greenhouse gasses the environment is subjected to. The Kyoto Box Oven was created by a Kenya-based entrepreneur Jon Bohmer of Kyoto Energy. The very low tech oven was designed as part of a Financial Times Climate Change Challenge, beating 300 other contestants.

The Kyoto Box Oven can reach temperatures of 165 degrees Celcius, and is able to cook casseroles, boil water and bake bread. The great thing is, it costs just 5 euros (around £4.50 or $7), and reduces indoor smoke inhalation, avoids fire hazards and reduces deforestation. Since it packs flat, you can fit thousands of them on the back of a standard lorry.

The oven is made from 2 cardboard boxes, one inside the other, with a clear acrylic cover. Black paint on the inner box and silver foil on the outer help concentrate the heat. The clear plastic cover traps heat in a similar way to greenhouses.

Jon intends to use the prize money to fund mass trials in 10 countries including South Africa, India and Indonesia. The box is designed to help save the millions of children who die from unclean drinking water and uncooked food. Initial calculations suggest that using the box will save around two tonnes of carbon emissions per family per year!
