This Solar-Powered Keyring Torch is a small but powerful LED torch. The torch can charge from both sunlight and ambient light to provide you with a powerful focused beam of light when required. The tiny size of the torch makes it practical to be taken anywhere with you in case you require it.

The Solar Keyring Torch uses 3 LEDs along the front edge to provide you with a focused beam of light when it is required. The 3 LEDs can be used to provide light for around 2 – 3 hours when the internal battery is fully charged. It can take around 6 hours to fully charge the battery. Though direct, bright sunlight is best for charging the torch quickly and efficiently the torch can charge from the ambient light within a room. This allows you to leave the torch keyring on a surface like a desk with the solar panel facing up in a room that is lit for use and have the peace of mind to know the torch is charging.

The ability to charge in even weak light allows the torch to be able to provide you with illumination whenever you require it with only a little forethought to ensure it has had some time charging. The solar panel and LEDs are housed in a shockproof rubber casing, which helps to protect the torch from any bumps and knocks that it might incur in a pocket or bag, especially next to keys.

NoPoPo Urine Powered Mini Lantern

Recently, the NoPoPo Batteries where released. The NoPoPo batteries use urine to provide battery power. The battery is made from carbon and magnesium, and uses urine (as well as other liquids like beer, sake and cola) as an electrolyte to generate an electrical current. Well now the Japan Trend Shop is offering a NoPoPo Urine Powered Torch and Lantern gadget. The torch uses a bright white LED which can be used in lantern or flashlight mode.

Unfortunately, a NoPoPo battery can only be recharged four times, which means it has a pretty short lifespan. However, with a capacity of 500mAh, the batteries would be pretty effective in an emergency kit. The torch and batteries sell for $39 (about £24), so it’s a little pricey, but very novel!

Solar Powered and Hand-crank LED Lantern

Hand-crank eco gadgets are definitely becoming more popular, and now there’s a Solar Powered and Hand-crank LED Lantern that combines a solar panel and a hand-powered charger into a free-standing camping lamp. The lamp can also be used to charge mobile phones using the phone charging cable.

The solar panel can be used to charge the lamp in just 6 hours. However, no information about how quickly the handcrank will charge the internal battery. From the other hand-powered green gadgets we’ve reviewed, it’s around about 20 minutes light for 1 minutes hand power.

I can imagine that this light is perfect for camping since it’s free standing. You could have 3 or 4 of these lamps around the camping area, giving you lots of useful light without spending loads on batteries. The solar powered and hand-crank lamp is available for $34.99 from GizFever.

Hand Powered Wind Up Emergency Torch

You know how frustrating it is when you need a torch, but find out that the batteries are dead? Imagine being in an emergency situation (such as the car breaking down at night), that’s even more annoying! That’s what led a friend of mine to buy a Windup Emergency Torch, which is charged up in just a few revolutions of the wind up handle!

What’s different about this wind up torch eco gadget compared to other hand-powered torches? Well this torch features a long life rechargeable battery, which basically doesn’t degrade when you keep charging and discharging it. Given that wind up torches will constantly be charged and discharged over time, this is a pretty essential feature.

This torch also features a bright LED torch, a strong magnetic base to allow the flashing red emergency light to be seen when it’s stuck onto the top of your car, an emergency hammer for breaking glass and a seatbelt cutter. So the torch is specifically aimed at people to keep in their glove box in their cars.

Having played with one of these torches, I now have one that I keep in the house. It comes in so useful for those odd jobs that you do at home. The LED light is surprisingly bright too, it’s far from being pathetic. Oh, and when they say up to 30 minutes of light from 1 minute of winding – well, it’s true. The battery lasts for ages!
