This Ionising Light Bulb is an energy saving light bulb that also produces negative ions. These ions are thought to help clean the air of things like dust and bacteria to help improve the air quality.

There is some debate on the effectiveness of negative ions to cleanse the air effectively, especially if there is a single light in a large room space. The makers however believe there is supporting evidence to the bulbs effectiveness. At the very least the bulb will use less energy than an incandescent equivalent.

Flo is a desk light concept using the form and function of sink taps as an integral influence on its design. By operating the taps a user can control the light level, giving a range of lighting from a soft warm light to a cool bright light.

The Flo lighting concept has been designed by Michael Angelini to help users be more aware of the electricity they are using. The taps used to control lighting level have also been used to help a user be subtly reminded that electricity, like water, is something we should all be actively working to conserve. The desk lamp allows you to operate the lighting level from the tap switches, the light can be used for different lighting levels depending on what the user requires. It would seem that using a warmer, lower light level would use less electricity than using the cool, brighter light levels. This would allow you to have a desk lamp that is suitable for all occasions and, by selecting lower light levels when acceptable, can help reduce your energy usage.

The Flo desk light would be constructed in the majority from recycled materials, helping the light to be as eco-friendly as possible. By using LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) as the light source, the desk light will use less electricity than one operating an incandescent bulb, while having many benefits over low energy light bulbs like CFLs (Compact Florescent Light/lamp). The LEDs will last longer than both incandescent and CFL bulbs and LEDs, unlike CFL bulbs, contain no mercury.

Mercury as it is a toxic metal needs to be treated carefully when it comes to disposing of it, to avoid it contaminating the ecosystem.

This LED bulb offers the same brightness (if not a little brighter) than a CFL bulb while working with approximately the same energy efficiency. The LED bulbs should also turn on straight away without the warm up time that CFLs need. The EnduraLED can also be used with dimmer switches, something most CFLs cannot currently achieve.

The EnduraLED bulb marks a significant change to the way we light our homes. It offers an effective low energy equivalent to CFL lighting while avoiding the negatives of CFLs. The bulbs offer a way forward towards energy efficient lighting that can really be considered to be eco friendly.

The Safe T Light is a eco-friendly night light that plugs into a UK 3-Pin socket with a pass-thru socket so that you can still use that plug socket. The light can also be removed and used as a torch too. The light contains light sensors, which will switch on the light when it gets dark.

The Ecobulb is a energy saving idea by Seokjae Rhee. The concept bulb takes advantage of the eco friendly credentials of LED bulbs. Working with a remote control the bulb uses these LEDs to produce a light source that is directional.

The Ecobulb concept is that when lighting a room a lot of light is often not needed, only sections of a room are usually ever requiring lighting at any time. The bulb uses LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) in a 6 compartmental bulb design. The bulb has 6 distinct and separate areas to it which can be controlled with the Ecobulb’s remote control to turn any of these sections on or control the brightness of a section.

LED bulbs have many advantages over the more commonly used energy saving bulb the CFL ( Compact Florescent Light/lamp). The life span of a LED bulb is longer than that of a CFL. CFLs also cause a problem when it comes to disposing of them due to them containing mercury (though this is a trace amount). The LED bulb does not have any such issues while working with approximately the same energy efficiency. The LED bulbs should also turn on straight away without the warm up time that CFLs need.

The Ecobulbs concept then also contributes to less electricity usage as only sections of the light are used at once. There is no light wastage, no light being used to illuminate areas of a room not in use. This, coupled with the brightness control, means that the one light bulb can then take the place of many different light functions, from a small pool of soft light like that of a lamp to a brightly lit room all at the push of a button. One problem may be finding the button to do this, especially if there is a frequent need to change the sections of light as remote controls do often go missing.

About a month ago, I was contacted by Tim LeMaster regarding the After-Lite product. The After-Lite is essentially a plastic-based disc that fits to the bottom of an energy-saving light bulb. When you have your lights on, the disc “charges up”. When you switch your lights off, the After-Lite disc carries on glowing, giving you free light!

Tim is a professional inventor, and has been so for 25 years. As an expert in photo luminescent technology, he’s been working on a range of innovative safety products for low light and dark conditions. To put it in context, Tim’s company FOTOLum developed the photo-luminescent vinyl patches that the New York City Fire Department wear on their uniforms… as a matter of their department safety policy!

The After-Lite uses what Tim calls a Crystal Energy Cell. The cell (or disc) can charge up in just a few minutes, and gives enough light to easily see what you’re doing in a room. Tim sent me some of these discs to play with, and they’re a really interesting eco-friendly gadget! The cells are designed for US style energy saving light bulbs, but after a little bit of tweaking, I got them to neatly fit a modern UK style light bulb.

I personally found that the cells charge up in just a few minutes, and will carry on glowing for several hours. Although the light output decreases with time (as you’d expect with anything that glows in the dark), I found that the cells were still glowing about 10 hours later.

The After-Lite is not designed to replace bulbs, it’s merely offered as supplement your lighting. If there are situations when there’s a sudden power cut, the cells will just glow and offer a simple to install emergency light source.

Another use for this product is as a child’s night light. Since young children are often afraid of the dark, and rather than keep your lights on overnight, the After-Lite cell will start glowing as soon as the light is switched off. This glowing light should be plenty enough to give a child peace of mind, and it doesn’t cost a single penny in energy!
