When rushing to work, many people take a trip to a trendy coffee shop to get their much-needed caffeine fix for the morning. However, the paper or polystyrene cups with plastic lids are not the ideal vessels for the eco-friendly to be drinking out of. For the most-part, neither the paper or the polystyrene are easily recyclable.

Why not help to save the planet, as well as your bank balance, by purchasing a ceramic “I Am Not a Paper Cup” cup? By making your own coffee and taking it to work in one of these, you are able to reuse the cup over and over again. Made from double-walled ceramic and featuring a coffee-shop-style lid with a spout (made from silicone) this cup keeps your drink warm and decreases the chances of you spilling your drink over the latest company reports or yourself. Some smart designers by the names of Won-Jae Lee, Jun-Yong Lee, Sang-Jun Hahn, Sun-Kyu Kim and Yeo-Wool Kang have come up with an eco-friendly packaging solution for food that does not use any plastic. Essentially, the spoon or fork pops out from the handle of the food box. No need for plastic utensils!

The spoon is simply popped out from the handle, then folded to turn it into a handle. If you want a fork, you just need to cut out a V-shape from the end of the spoon. A great solution for dry foods, but I think that anything ‘wet’ will quickly render the utensils useless.

Although the practicality of this solution is limited, I think that the designers are to be congratulated for at least trying something different. Perhaps there’s an eco-friendly way to coat the cardboard so that it’s waterproof?

The Kyoto Box Oven was created by a Kenya-based entrepreneur Jon Bohmer of Kyoto Energy. The very low tech oven was designed as part of a Financial Times Climate Change Challenge, beating 300 other contestants.

The Kyoto Box Oven can reach temperatures of 165 degrees Celcius, and is able to cook casseroles, boil water and bake bread. The great thing is, it costs just 5 euros (around £4.50 or $7), and reduces indoor smoke inhalation, avoids fire hazards and reduces deforestation. Since it packs flat, you can fit thousands of them on the back of a standard lorry.

The oven is made from 2 cardboard boxes, one inside the other, with a clear acrylic cover. Black paint on the inner box and silver foil on the outer help concentrate the heat. The clear plastic cover traps heat in a similar way to greenhouses.

Jon intends to use the prize money to fund mass trials in 10 countries including South Africa, India and Indonesia. The box is designed to help save the millions of children who die from unclean drinking water and uncooked food. Initial calculations suggest that using the box will save around two tonnes of carbon emissions per family per year!
