Eco-Drop – Eco Friendly Garden Fertilizer Concept

The Eco-Drop is a concept to use the liquids that worms produce from breaking down waste food as a fertilizer for a garden. The concept helps to prevent harmful chemicals entering the food chain and to prevent water contamination. It also helps to recycle a households food waste into an effective fertilizer for a garden.

The Eco-Drop concept has been designed by Seung Kim to help combat the problems of water contamination and to help reduce the amount of household waste going to landfill. The Eco-Drop would work by using worms to break down organic matter waste (like left over food, vegetable peelings etc). Worms would feed on this waste which would be placed with them into the main chamber of the device. As the worms feed, they excrete the digested matter and break the matter down.

This creates a liquid or worm juice that makes a great fertilizer for a garden. Many use worms to help break down their waste for composting currently. The difference with this concept is that it allows you to make use of the rich fertilizing liquid cleanly and easily. The Eco-Drop allows you to use this fluid as a fertilizer when watering a garden through a sprinkler system. The device hopes to take out the effort in using this form of fertilizer, there is no heavy lifting, no hard work like that of covering the ground in more compost and there is no messy extraction of the fluid. To use the worm juice you simply fill a cup like part of the device with the fluid from a nozzle located at the bottom of the main chamber, the cup part then attaches to the sprinkler part to allow you to water the garden with a worm juice and water mix.

Chemical fertilizers can cause a lot of damage to the ecosystem. The chemicals find their way down into the water table and are washed into drains which can lead into rivers and lakes. The fertilizers change the natural balance of these water habitats and can cause devastating results. The worm juice though is a natural product, that will not effect the ecosystem in the same way. It also helps to reduce down the amount of waste a household would send to landfill and could help to encourage a household to grown some of their own foods. The concept would not require any long term running costs while providing you with a useful resource for your garden.

This solar powered Spinning Sunflower is meant for use as an amusing addition to any garden or conservatory.

The solar powered Spinning Sunflower does exactly what it states, when sunlight hits the solar panel (located on the back of the sunflower head) the electrical energy provided is used to cause the sunflower to spin. The Spinning Sunflower should then provide amusement in your garden for all those who find such a thing entertaining (for example children or the occasional puzzled bird).

The Spinning Sunflower measures 55 cm high (21.65 in), and the flower head has a diameter of 22 cm (8.66 in). The Sunflower is fully weatherproof to help it last outdoors but can also be used indoors in suitably lit areas such as a conservatory.

Solar-Powered Star Shaped LED Lights

Solar Star Lights can illuminate any garden with their white LED lights. These weatherproof lights can be used to decorate many different garden elements like trees, bushes and archways, bringing light to shady spots as night falls.

The Solar Star lights use a separate solar panel which can be staked a short distance away from where you wish to hang the chain of LED star shaped lights. The lights then can be placed into a shady area of garden without worry of lack of sunlight, while the discrete solar panel takes advantage of a sunny spot nearby. The solar panel measures 40.6cm high by 15cm wide (16 inches x 6 inches). The lights do not turn on until the solar power panel detects that dusk has fallen, switching from charging to supplying power to these lights.

The Solar Star Lights come in strings that are 7m (23ft.) long (double packs are available). Each string comprises of 50 LED lights, each with a transparent star shaped cover. These energy-saving LED lights provide up to 6 hours of light each night. In winter, when the solar panel may not achieve a full charge, the rechargeable lead acid batteries can be charged in an indoor charging unit or replaced. Fully charged batteries can operate the lights for 15 nights without any sunlight to charge them.

The Green Glazed Ceramic Solar Sphere Lantern is a quaint solar light that is perfect for a conservatory, kitchen window, or any windowsill really. The lantern looks very much like its candle-lit counterpart, except without the need for candles. Volksgarden Rotating Garden

The Volksgarden Rotating Garden is a circular hydroponics system that allows you to grow up to 80 plants in less than 9 square feet! The Volksgarden Rotating Garden rotates completely every 45 minutes, making the most efficient use of light, water and nutrients. The rotating garden is perfect if you don’t have a great deal of space, but at a diameter of 48″, and being 76″ tall by 30″ wide, you’re going to need some space for it!

The Volksgarden wheel is made from food-grade molded plastic, with the structural components being made of power-coated steel. Each compartment is designed to hold 3 inches of nutrient medium. Nutrients and water are added to the lower water tray, where all plants receive nutrients as they pass through the tray.

The aspect where the rotating garden is not quite so eco-friendly is where it needs a high power lamp (400W, 600W or 1000W), although there are some florescent lamps you could use instead. Just a snip at $1995 USD, but you do get a 10% if you buy two!

Smart Solar Roto Basket – Garden Basket Rotator

The Smart Solar Roto Basket is a gadget that will automatically turn your hanging baskets so that all of the plants in the basket get equal exposure to the sun. If the sunlight is brighter, the basket turns more quickly. The gadget will also help ensure patches of soil in the hanging baskets don’t dry out too quickly.

The basket rotator can only handle a maximum weight of 27lbs, which means that you can only really use it on lighter baskets. The reviews on the device are not too great, meaning you might be better off getting a simple twisting hook and turning the basket manually every evening. Power Plant Growing Machine

If you don’t have a garden, but you still want to be green-fingered, you might find the Aeroponics Power Plant Growing Machine interesting. Using technology pioneered by NASA, the growing machine allows you to grow all kinds of plants all year round using a soil-less plant-growing technique. The system uses a series of microjets that constantly sprays roots with super-oxygenated nutrient rich water to help plants grow.

You simply add water to the nutrient mix, add the nutrient solution to the specially designed sponge strip, sow your seeds in the sponge and stick the growing machine on your windowsill. The seeds will start to germinate in just a few days, meaning you don’t need to wait long to enjoy the fruits of your (albeit minor) labour.

The growing machine runs on a 12 volt power supply which drives the microjet pump. Spare sponges are not yet available. Once your nutrient solution runs out, you can just use common nutrient mixes as available from all garden centres.

What are the benefits?

Grow herbs, flowers and fruit all-year round
No need for soil, so no works or pesky insects
Very easy to use, very low maintanance
Very low energy usage, so cheap to run

Neuton CE 6 Battery-Powered Mower

The Neuton CE 6 Mower is a rechargeable battery-powered lawn mower for the garden. Rather than using a petroleum-based fuel, the mower just uses batteries. A single charge of the 360kWh battery is enough to mow up to 15,000 sq. ft. or 1/3 acre of grass.

Theoretically, you could use solar panels to charge these batteries to be completely eco-friendly, but if it takes 12 hours to charge a battery via the mains, then it would probably take 20 to 30 hours to charge via a large solar panel.

The internal rechargeable battery can be charged in about 12 hours, and supposedly cost just 10 cents per full charge. The manufacturers also claim that the battery is 95% recyclable (why not 100%?) and will last up to 5 years with proper care. A spare battery will cost you around $100. The mower itself, which comes with a battery and charge will cost you the best part of $500.

Since the lawn mower is not directly connected to the mains, its ideal for people with large or remote gardens. I can’t imagine professional gardeners using one though, as they’d get through 10 batteries a day!

Fully Automated Solar-powered Lawn Mower Robot

The RBZG001 Solar Lawnmower Robot is an intelligent garden mower that has been designed for both home and commercial use. The mower uses solar power to charge itself, and uses network technology to add a layer of intelligence about its mowing behaviour.

The mower features technology to climb slopes, automatically identifying its route, avoiding slopes and image recognition for obstacles. The mower can either collect all of the grass cuttings its internal container, or it can spread the cuttings as it cuts. The latter is better for the lawn, as the nutrients from the cut grass can leech back into the soil.

No pricing information is available, but I bet it won’t be cheap! My guess is that it would cost around $5000.

Water Saving Water Watch Spray Nozzle

Well it’s now the gardening season, so most of us are pottering around in our gardens looking after all our plants. If you don’t get a great deal of rain, then you’ll be watering the garden. If you have a garden hose, you’ll probably be using loads of water without realising it! The Water Watch Spray Nozzle and Water Watch Fan Spray Nozzle are adjustable spray attachments for your garden hose that tell you just how much water you’re using.

The Water Watch 8-Pattern Spray Nozzle (pictured above) is slightly different in that it has 8 possible spray patterns that you can choose, each using a different volume of water. Regardless of what mode you use though, the little water meter will tell you how many gallons you’ve used to water the garden.

The fan nozzle is priced at $12.95, and the adjustable nozzle is priced at $17.95.
