Firefly USB And Dynamo Light By Powerplus

The Firefly USB And Dynamo Light is a wind-up multifunctional LED spotlight that provides you with a bright, focused light, a softer light or even an emergency light whenever it is required. The light makes use of a dynamo to produce the electricity, because of this there will never be any worries over it running out of power when you need a light most.

The Firefly USB And Dynamo Light has been made by Powerplus. The light uses 16 bright LEDs to produce a normal level of lighting, the light is able to take this up a notch and use the same LEDs to produce a brighter light on the high setting when it is required. Alongside these white LEDs the torch features 3 red LEDs, these are perfect for use as a warning light and can be set to be either constantly on, or flashing.

The Firefly uses a dynamo to power the LEDs and requires you to wind up/crank the handle to provide power. The light can be charged through a USB cable if required. By cranking the torch for just one minute you can provide yourself with either 25 mins of light at a normal level or 5 mins at a high level, it will also provide you with 45 mins of red LEDs flashing or 25 mins with them constantly on. From 3 minutes of cranking the light can provide you with 40 mins of normal level lighting and 9 mins of high level lighting. The device requires around 100 minutes of cranking to be fully charged, or 5 hours through the adapter. Once it is fully charged it can provide you with 12 hours of normal lighting, 2.5 hours of high power lighting and can power the red LEDs either flashing for 28 hours or fully on for 14 hours.

The light is designed to be easy to position anywhere to provide you with the lighting you require. It features an integrated hanging system that allows you to hang the light up wherever you want it and also includes a magnetic base that allows you to secure the Firefly light onto any magnetic metallic surface. The Firefly Light is a handy little light to have around to help light up any area be it out camping or caravaning, or around the house. Due to being powered through a hand crank the light will always be ready for use without the need for a constant stream of batteries.

Good espresso can be hard to come by, usually involving a run to a local good coffee shop or buying expensive electronic devices. The Handheld Portable Espresso Maker by Handpresso aims to bring good espresso to all without the use of electricity or large cumbersome devices.

The Handpresso Wild is a portable espresso maker that looks rather like a bizarre bike pump and is operated in a similar manner. Using Easy Serving Espresso (E.S.E) pods the device allows you to make espresso anywhere, in your living room, camping outdoors, anywhere you have access to hot water.

The espresso maker uses no electricity, the pressure is created by your own movements in pumping the handle as you would a bike pump. There is a pressure gauge on the device that shows you when you have reached 16 bar of pressure, highlighted out as a green zone. When this pressure is achieved you place a E.S.E pod into the device, add boiling or hot water (could take hot water with you in a thermos flask) and the pressure forces the water through the E.S.E pod, making the cup of espresso. It is using the pressure to do this that helps make this a more genuine espresso.

The Handpresso Wild is made from environmentally friendly materials. It helps ensure even those who travel can enjoy a good cup of coffee when they need it. Designed to be small enough to fit easily into a bag, backpack or handbag It is a truly portable device that works without the need of mains electricity or batteries. The only problem is sourcing hot water for this, but that could be taken with you in a thermos flask.

Wind-Up FM/Weather Radio With A LED Flashlight By Mitaki-Japan

Using wind up technology, Mitaki-Japan have produced this FM/Weather Radio which has a LED flashlight built into it. With this one item you can listen to the radio, weather warnings, and be able to light your way.

The FM/Weather Radio comes with an earphone jack, a recharge jack and cord for mobile phones, and a wrist strap. It does have a DC output socket though it does not come with a DC cord. To charge the radio you wind it up using the handle on the side. From 1 minute of winding the radio you get 30 minutes of it powering the LED torch, 10 minutes of it powering the radio or 3 minutes of it powering the weather warning alert.

As this radio works on wind up technology there is no need to go to great lengths of preparation to use it, such as making sure you have charged batteries handy, or have remembered to leave it out in direct sunlight to charge though solar panels. As soon as you need any part of it then its ready to go as soon as you crank the handle. Your arm provides the energy that is converted into electricity to power the device.

YoGen Hand-Powered Portable Gadget Charger

It was about a year ago when I reported on the YoGen Max, which is as foot-powered laptop charger. However, Easy Energy are at it again with their YoGen Hand-Powered Gadget Charger. The YoGen charger charges virtually any mobile gadget by using a draw and release mechanism.

You can think of the draw and release mechanism a little like that you see on childrens’ toys. You draw the string away from the charger and then let it go. As the string winds back into the charger it drives an internal generator, which is then used to charge up your various portable gadgets, such as MP3 players, phones, cameras, GPS navigators, and more.

You only need a few minutes of pull and release to charge your gadgets. The YoGen charger comes with a master cable with changeable connection tips, such as mini-USB, Nokia charger tips, LG charger tips, Sony Ericsson charger tips, and of course the Apple connector. Surprisingly, the YoGen only measures 55 mm in width, 90 mm in length and 23 mm in thickness, weighing only 100g!

BodyGard Hand-Powered Emergency Tool

The BodyGard Hand-Powered Emergency Tool is essentially a hybrid of a swiss army knife and a survival kit. The gadget contains a hand-crank so that you can charge up the internal battery for powering the built-in bright LED flashlight, the flashing red emergency light, the digital FM radio, the motion activated security alarm, or the mobile phone and cell phone charger. And those are just the electronic aspects of the 12-in-1 emergency gadget!

The tool also contains a panic button with an extremely loud sonic alarm, large 14mm diameter oil filled compass, signaling mirror to signal for help, a handy storage compartment for matches and/or pills, an adjustable lanyard to allow you to tie the tool to anything you like, and finally a charging unit so you can charge it via the mains too.

Basically this gadget gives you a lot of useful stuff for any situation where you get stranded in a remote location. The one lacking feature that might have been a good idea is a walkie-talkie. It would also have been nice to have an electronic pest deterrent. However, it’s a cool little gadget, and only costs $19.99!

Hand-powered Windup Mobile Phone Charger

The Hand-powered Windup Mobile Phone Charger is a perfect and affordable little gadget that allows you to top up your mobile phone using nothing but hand power. We’ve seen hand-powered chargers before, but this one stands out as it’s so cheap at just £5.99 (around $10) and it supports a number of mobile phones (sadly not the iPhone though).

The phone charger is really light and compact, and is able to give you 8 minutes of talk time with just 3.5 minutes of hand power (where you average at around two and a half turns per second). Counter-intuitively, it’s not the speed of cranking that determines how much talk time you get, but more the number of turns that you do. This is because the energy generated by a dynamo is directly proportional to the number of turns completed, rather than the speed of the magnet moving within the coil. However, the faster you go, the less time it will take to charge your phone!

PUYL Bicycle Pump and Hand-Powered Torch Combo

The PUYL is a combined bicycle pump and a hand-powered torch in one, perfect for cyclists everywhere. Designed by industrial designerKai Malte Roever, the pump uses the motion of a magnet through copper coils to generate electricity. This electricity is used to charge a battery which then powers the LED-based light bulb at the end of the pump.

Tyres can be inflated by the pump by using the side-mounted filling hole, since the end of the pump is replaced by the LED light. However, you don’t need a flat tyre in order to charge the light!

The designer has submitted a patent application for the design. A good thing too, as it’s a great blend of technology.

I used to love walkie talkies when I was younger, but it was so frustrating when the batteries ran out so quickly (and when it eventually broke!). Solar Powered and Hand-crank LED Lantern

Hand-crank eco gadgets are definitely becoming more popular, and now there’s a Solar Powered and Hand-crank LED Lantern that combines a solar panel and a hand-powered charger into a free-standing camping lamp. The lamp can also be used to charge mobile phones using the phone charging cable.

The solar panel can be used to charge the lamp in just 6 hours. However, no information about how quickly the handcrank will charge the internal battery. From the other hand-powered green gadgets we’ve reviewed, it’s around about 20 minutes light for 1 minutes hand power.

I can imagine that this light is perfect for camping since it’s free standing. You could have 3 or 4 of these lamps around the camping area, giving you lots of useful light without spending loads on batteries. The solar powered and hand-crank lamp is available for $34.99 from GizFever.
