A bidet is a bathroom device that is used to clean yourself once you’ve just been to the loo. Bidets are not particularly common in some parts of Europe and North America, although they are commonly found in Southern Europe, some Latin American countries, as well as some African and Asian countries. Essentially its about using water to clean yourself rather than using toilet paper. You then dry yourself using paper toils, or even better, a towel.

I must admit, being a Brit, I’m not very keen on the idea. As barbaric as it sounds, toilet paper seems to be a much better idea to me. However, if you consider how many trees are used to create toilet rolls worldwide, any saving would be better for the environment. Just imagine how much energy is used to treat sewage to turn it into safe drinking water, where toilet paper is a significant part of that sewage. Again, less toilet paper means less energy is needed to treat water in the first place. Of course using less toilet paper will also help you save money, and everything counts in these tough economic times.

The Bathroom Bidet Sprayer is a hand held shower-like device that can be used as a bidet in your home without the need for a plumber. The sprayer is connected to the cold water pipe on your toilet cistern, meaning you don’t need a full bidet suite to benefit from the bidet. In fact the Hand Bidet Sprayer people claim it has better water flow and control than a standard bidet provides.

The sprayer is made from a high quality anti-bacterial plastic to reduce the chances of spreading nasty bacteria. The manufacturers also say there are health benefits from using a bidet too!

If you concious of the environment and you want to get fit, the EcoMill is an eco-friendly gym treadmill which uses the energy generated from your running to charge an internal battery. The internal battery is then used to power the treadmill display and the elevation system. The EcoMill is a great alternative to conventional Treadmills that use electricity to drive the treadmill motor.

It was only a matter of time before a treadmill was designed that runs on human power. Cross trainers and exercise bikes have been doing it for years. However, the price tag is a little nasty, the EcoMill costs a hefty $8500 (£5100)! Although you could just go outside to get your exercise and save a ton of money, at least the EcoMill will encourage you to exercise indoors when the weather is too cold or too wet!

The Sensaris Bluetooth Device is a air quality and noise monitoring gadget that relays data back to a central server over the mobile phone networks. Using the Bluetooth functionality in your phone, it will relay air and noise conditions along with your current GPS location. All this data is then made available to people who may or may not have a Sensaris gadget.

Using your data, along with data from other devices, you could then get an accurate indication of your local environment. According to the manufacturers, there are very few pollution monitoring devices that exist. By using many portable devices at once, you get a much more accurate idea of air and noise pollution, particularly in densely populated areas.

However, I question how useful the information will be. Since the only way to get lots of data is to ensure that everyone has a unit. I can’t see everyone going out to buy a sensor.

I apologise if this article offends anyone, but I personally feel that it fits perfectly on EnviroGadget! The Earth Angel has been revealed as the first 100% green sex toy from Irish company Caden Enterprises. The vibrator is completely made from recycled materials, and it never needs charging up due to using a wind-up crank to charge the internal rechargeable battery.

The toy is very similar to wind up radios. You just crank the toy for 4 minutes in a clockwise direction (does anti-clockwise discharge it??) and you get 30 minutes of vibrations. The toy also comes with an on/off switch, so you can save it for later.

Apparently the The Earth Angel is just as good as any other sex toy, but it has the eco-friendly edge. Love Honey also have a range of 100% organic lubricants, so you can be completely eco-friendly in the bedroom!

The Chinese therapy balls have long been used in Chinese medicine as a way to stimulate acupuncture points in the hand and to loosen stiff joints. As someone who suffers from hand pain on occasion, I think that they’re a great way to improve mobility in your hands and fingers. A product designer by the name of Jiang Qian has combine this hand therapy gadget with a battery charger!

Essentially the balls convert rotational kinetic energy (i.e. movement) into electricity that chargers the batteries internally. As you move the balls around each other, they drive a tiny dynamo internally. You can tell if the AA or AAA battery is charged or not due to the built-in LED light. I just wonder how long it takes to charge up a single battery!?

The Bel Air Purification System is a mini greenhouse where pollutants in the air are filtered out. The plants in the glass jar will metabolise and absorb many airborne toxins, passing them through a 3-stage filter, namely through the plant leaves, its roots, and a humid bath.

The basis of the project was on NASA’s research into air-purifying systems, particularly the efficiency of plants at absorbing and eliminating pollutants in aircraft. The Bel Air unit is designed for domestic use, exploiting the the most effective purification plants identified by NASA’s research.

Unfortunately, the unit does consume some energy from the mains to pump air through the plant filter. However, you could probably set up a solar panel rig to specifically power this unit without too much hassle.

AirGo is a creative eco-gadget that is part of a campaign creating awareness of global warming and sustainability. The AirGo gadget is a wearable device and is powered by kinetic energy generated by the wearer’s movements. All of the parts are easily disassembled for recycling too!

The AirGo device has been designed to be a wearable fashion accessory among fashion-concious city-dewelling citizens who take an interest in their health. Some of the funding from selling the device is used to fund further research into air quality and the environment. Unfortunately there are no technical specifications or pricing details, however, as long as its affordable, I expect it will do well.

With some clever innovation, it’s amazing what eco gadgets can be created that can help the planet. The 360 Recycled Paper Bottle won an IDEA (International Design Excellence Award) for this design.

Given the millions of plastic bottles that we discard each year, something that finally addresses this issue is to be congratulated. However, we’ve been using aluminium cans for years… why aren’t we using a variation of these instead of plastic?

I question the durability of these paper bottles, however, if they’re going to be discarded anyway, we might as well have something highly biodegradable.

The SteriPEN is an eco-friendly gadget ideal if you’re travelling to areas with typically unsafe drinking water. The SteriPEN will allow you to refill your water bottles (rather than buy bottles from a shop) and ensure the water is safe before you drink it. The pen uses shortwave ultraviolet light which damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses and protozoa, rendering them harmless.

It takes just 45 seconds to sterilise 500ml of water. A single charge of 4xAA batteries can treat up to between 90 and 105 litres of water. If you use a rechargeable battery (such as with a solar charger), the SteriPEN is completely portable and green.

The SteriPEN costs around $90, or about £50-£70 in the UK.
