An eco-friendly slow cooker? Whatever next? Well, if there are domestic gadgets that can save you energy, surely they deserve a mention? I know I’ve mentioned the energy saving vacuum cleaner and the eco-friendly clothes iron lately, but it’s about time our home appliances got revamped! Anyway, back to the slow cooker…

A slow cooker, as you might expect, cooks food slowly using electricity in a dedicated cooking pot. The pot has very effective insulating materials that minimises the loss of energy, in addition to being much smaller than an oven. As a result, the slow cooker is claimed to save up to 66% of the energy compared to that of an oven.

The slow cooker uses 156W of energy, but it comes with a range of power settings depending on the meal you’re cooking. The pot is perfect for cooking curries, chilli con carne, casseroles as well as some meat joints. Clearly if you’re cooking more than one item at a time, an oven is probably going to be more energy efficient.

The slow cooker costs just £35.75 plus delivery.

So you’re probably wondering why I consider a vacuum cleaner to be an eco gadget, well the Morphy Richards Ecolectric Vacuum Cleaner some great eco-friendly aspects, so I think it’s worthy of a mention. The vacuum cleaner most notably uses a 1000W motor rather than a conventional 2000W motor used in other upright cleaners. This means there’s a 50% saving in energy usage! The cleaner is also made from recycled materials and is 100% recyclable at the end of it’s life.

The Ecolectric PerformAir 1000w Bagless Upright (it’s proper name) has no need for bags, as it uses a 4.2 litre capacity chamber to collect dust and dirt. The large capacity means you won’t be running to your dustbin to empty it every five minutes. The cleaner only weighs just over 6kg, which means it’s light enough to carry, particularly for cleaning the stairs. The vacuum cleaner comes with a range of the usual accessories, and also features a HEPA filter and specially designed brushes to pick up pet hair.

The vacuum cleaner is priced just under £100, which is roughly the same price as other upright vacuum cleaners. This means you start saving money from the moment you start using it!

When we’re saving the planet, we sometimes forget about the more mundane appliances around the home that we could upgrade to save some more energy. Some of the more energy intensive appliances in the home include vacuum cleaners, electric heaters, electric cookers, microwaves and kettles, as well as irons! The Morphy Richards Ecolectric Energy Saving Iron has been designed to save energy with an automatic shutoff after a set time period.

The eco shut off will turn off the iron electronically after 3 minutes when the iron is standing upright, and after 1 minute if the soleplate of the iron is on a surface. Given that the iron has a typical power consumption of 2kW, every minute the iron is not switched on will save you money. It would have been nice to see some more eco-friendly features, such as a more efficient hot-plate which needs less heating time, or a lower power rating overall. However, it’s early days.

The iron also features a jet clean facility, which means you can keep the inside of the iron free from dust and particles, ensuring the iron is able to operate as efficiently as possible. Hopefully this helps if you live in a limescale area as well, as limescale furring inside a steam iron can stop it from working efficiently too.

The Morphy Richards Ecolectric Iron is available for just £39.14, which is about the same as any other good clothes iron in the UK.
