The Eat House is a fun concept for a building made from growing plants. The modular frame houses many vegetable crates, re-purposed into small beds for plant growing, allowing plants to cover the whole of the outside of the building.

The Eat House has been designed by Marijke Bruinsma from the dutch firm De Stuurlui Stedenbouw and Marjan van Capelle and Arjen de Groot from Atelier GRAS!. The concept takes advantage of modern intensive farming techniques to provide a fruit and vegetable garden that moves beyond the garden and over the whole house. Being so close to all the fresh foods will certainly tempt anyone to pick their own and enjoy, helping to encourage home growing for fresh produce.

The Eat House is created from vegetable crates, the crates used to transport vegetables from place to place. Each crate is converted into a small bed for growing plants such as fruits, vegetables or herbs in, while providing some structural framework for the house. This concept may not be exactly practical for house construction in the future, but does help to demonstrate just how much space we could each be using for growing plants, even those we can eat. The re-use of vegetable crates helps to highlight the amount of miles a lot of produce has to travel to finally reach our homes.

Bambu is a concept for an eco-gardening system designed to assist the older generations into urban gardening. The system allows the planter levels to be raised up to heights that allow users to care for the plants with a minimum of bending, while allowing them to become more active.

The Bambu concept has been conceived by designer Steven Kurniawan to help provide purposeful activity for the older generations. Using materials such as bamboo to construct the planter system, Bambu allows users to grow crops in the comfort of their own home, leaving them free to reap the benefits of fresh produce and clearer air.

The positive effects of plants in a room are well known, for example they can help to produce oxygen, provide a room with fragrance, or just simply provide beautiful life to a living area. The Bambu system has been designed to allow freedom in construction, the part are easily assembled and can be constructed in a number of ways to allow you to achieve the planter style you want. To minimize any negative impact on the environment from the production of the planter materials such as bamboo have been used in the construction. Bamboo is a sustainable material that is quick to grow, making it a great material to use for items such as this.

The Bambu concept would allow the elderly, or those with lessened mobility to be able to grow plants with ease in their own home. This activity can have a beneficial effect on the users and the system can help produce anything from beautiful flowers to crops of fresh vegetables. The Pest Free Elevated Garden is designed to allow you to produce stronger, healthier, pest free plants without the aid of chemical pesticides. The greenhouse protects against pests, allowing your plants to grow in warmer, sunnier conditions which helps to encourage higher yields on your plants.

The Pest Free Elevated Garden raises your plants away from many common garden pests such as slugs, snails, rabbits and rodents. The base is roughly 51cm (20 in) high and does also allow you to tend to your plants whilst you’re sat in a chair. This is ideal for people with limited mobility who have trouble bending over. The greenhouse helps to protect your plants from pests without pesticides as it has insect netting hung over all sides. This allows the rain and sunlight through to your plants while keeping the insects out. It will additionally offer some protection to your plants from larger pests such as birds, cats or dogs. The side netting is easily pulled up when required to allow you access to your plants.

The Pest Free Elevated Garden is constructed from a PVC UV-resistant frame and base. It also includes 7mm clear poly sheeting that can be used to cover the sides of the greenhouse over the netting. This sheeting allows the garden to be used more like a traditional greenhouse would, keeping the plants within warmer and protected from the elements which is great for seedlings or for extending the plants growing season.

The Pest Free Elevated Garden measures 124.5 cm x 122 cm x 122cm (49 in x 48 in x 48 in). Because the garden is raised up from ground level, the temperature of the soil for the plants is higher, helping them to grow more vigorously. The plants also have more access to the sunlight without being so easily shaded by other objects around the garden. 

Though this elevated garden does prevent the need for the use of hazardous chemical pesticides, the use of PVC plastic is not eco-friendly in the slightest. There are plenty of other types of eco-friendly plastics that could be used instead. The manufacturers could also have used sustainable bamboo rather than use plastic. So a great idea, but it’d be pretty easy to make it completely eco-friendly with just a few changes.

The Pest Free Elevated Garden costs $599.95 and assembles within 2 hours using the supplied tools.

If you don’t have a garden, but you still want to be green-fingered, you might find the Aeroponics Power Plant Growing Machine interesting. Using technology pioneered by NASA, the growing machine allows you to grow all kinds of plants all year round using a soil-less plant-growing technique. The system uses a series of microjets that constantly sprays roots with super-oxygenated nutrient rich water to help plants grow.

You simply add water to the nutrient mix, add the nutrient solution to the specially designed sponge strip, sow your seeds in the sponge and stick the growing machine on your windowsill. The seeds will start to germinate in just a few days, meaning you don’t need to wait long to enjoy the fruits of your (albeit minor) labour.

The growing machine runs on a 12 volt power supply which drives the microjet pump. Spare sponges are not yet available. Once your nutrient solution runs out, you can just use common nutrient mixes as available from all garden centres.
