Personal solar panels are finally becoming more portable and functional – making alternative sources of energy like solar power a reality for many consumers and gadget fans. Regen’s ReNu is an example of an emerging breed of solar products that promise to bring solar energy to the masses. Regen’s ReNu packages a solar panel in a sleek and innovative design that fits seamlessly into the modern lifestyle, and makes charging many of your existing devices a snap.

Weighing in at 1.1 pounds (498g), the 9-by 9-inch portable tablet can easily be hung in a window with a suction cup, attached to a window frame, or placed on a table with its built-in stand. When placed in direct light, the ReNu’s built-in solar cells collect the sun’s energy to charge its internal lithium ion battery.

When fully charged, the device can then be docked into one of Regen’s several docking extensions (a phone charging system, a personal audio system, or a task lighting system), or can be used to deliver stored solar energy directly to many of your existing electronics gadgets via its built-in USB socket. Devices that can be charged include many mobile phones, portable navigation devices, backup batteries, and portable lights.

The amount of power that the ReNu solar panel can generate is entirely dependent on its location, outside weather, duration of time, and intensity of the solar energy it is exposed to. The manufacturer claims however that with direct exposure, the ReNu’s battery recharges in roughly four hours, and once charged is capable of powering or recharging your gadgets in roughly the same time as a standard wall outlet.

Priced at US$199, the ReNu is not inexpensive. For those who can afford it, it will provide over 500 charges of solar energy for your gadgets. The Regen ReNu will start shipping February 2010. You can place your preorders now and save $25.

There’s no question, that since the launch of the iPhone, there have been a flurry of products just for the iPhone, where us iPod Touch users have been missing out. Well the Solar Surge for the iPod Touch has been designed to keep your iPod Touch fully charged whilst your out and about.

Your iPod Touch fits snugly within the case, giving you full access to the touch screen without needing to take the iPod out of the case. The case itself is also lightweight and study, so it offers a degree of protection for your iPod Touch.

In full sun, the solar panel provides 100mA of charging current. The Surge has a 1500 mAh 3.7 V lithium-ion polymer internal battery, which represents 120% of the internal battery capacity of the iPod Touch. This means you more than double your iPod’s battery capacity.

To determine how much charge is left in the battery, the Surge features a 4 LED display which indicates the current charge status. The case also features a USB socket so that you can charge up the iPod via USB or sync with iTunes without needing to take it out of the Surge case too.

The cases are available for just under $80 each in the US, the case is not yet available in other countries such as the UK.

Solar charger gadgets are not exactly breaking news these days, but the Powcell solar charger is a little different in that its a bespoke case for an iPhone. The Powcell charger includes an internal battery which is charged via the solar panel, which is then used to charge the iPhone battery.

The case itself is a touch on the bulky side, but given how much battery power iPhones use, some free eco-friendly energy is no bad thing. Amusingly the designers call the product “unique”, but there are lots of iPod and iPhone solar chargers, so I remain sceptical. No pricing or technical specifications were available at the time of writing either.

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you know that surfing the web over WiFi or 3G will drain the battery fairly quickly, compared to listening to music or playing the odd game. However, this creative leather charger case from Brando allows you to charge up your iPhone or iPod Touch when you’re on the move. Hopefully extending the life of your battery before you need to charge it again at home.

The leather case actually has it’s own lithium ion rechargeable battery with a 1500mAh capacity. Therefore you can leave you case in the sun (such as on a window-ledge or in your car). You can then have your iPod Touch or iPhone with you. When the case battery has fully charged, it can charge an iPhone in 3 hours. This means you don’t have the inconvenience of having to leave your phone in the sun.

Although the charger does not specifically refer to compatibility with the iPod Touch, I imagine it will work fine with it. Most devices are 100% compatible between the iPhone and iPod Touch.
