The Natura Line has been designed by Sebastian Bergne for Tefal. These modern, stylish chocolate coloured cooking tools fuse function and style with environmental awareness. The metal used to form each and every pot and pan in the range is recycled aluminum. Any wooden features, such as pan handles or lid handles have been created from wood that has been responsibly sourced.

The packaging used for the line is minimalistic, using only what is required for each item and has been formed from recycled paper. The Natura Line consists of 3 pans of different diameters, a grill pan, a wok, Dutch oven, a frying pan, and a casserole dish.

The Natura Line has a beautiful and stylish natural look to it with smooth curves and earthy tones. The kitchenware has been formed from materials chosen for their environmental properties to create a line of cookware anyone would be proud to own.

Industrial designer Dennis Cheng has designed a simple system to keep fruit and veg cool without using any electricity, in fact only using the cooling powers of evaporation. This concept is to help draw people away from a reliance on fridges and return to more natural methods of cooling and storing foods. This concept design has been named eva2o.

This concept works on the age old knowledge that water evaporation cools, the same system used by all of us when we sweat. Using a double walled design the fruit and veg rests on an inner bowl which is made of glazed earthenware. This bowl rests on a non-glazed earthenware bowl, the feet on the bowl createing a space between the two bowls allowing water to be stored between them. The outer bowl also has feet to rest on, keeping a space between it and the shallow glazed drip dish. This design allows both air and water to circulate where they are needed to aid the evaporation process.

The shape of the eva2o has been designed to allow the water to be easily poured between dishes, the overlapping glass lids act as a funnel in the centre. The porous nature of the unglazed dish allows the water inside to evaporate through the sides of the dish, thus pulling away heat and cooling the inner bowl, and so the fruit and veg resting on it.

The designer Dennis Cheng has a fine eye for detail on this concept. The ring of ridges on the inner dish, which keep the food items elevated, have a gap running the radius of the bowl to aid cleaning it out. The two overlapping lids allow you to slide them apart easily to gain quick access to the contents within. This is also to help reduce the amount of waste there is as easily accessible fruit and veg that can be seen clearly is thought to encourage us to use it, while lasting longer due to the cooling to be used.

In theory this looks like a environmentally friendly way of keeping our fruit and veg cool, while allowing us to see it and access it easily. At the very least its a great idea for a cool fruit bowl.

As fruit and vegetables ripen, they release a gas called ethylene. In a self-perpetutating cycle, ethylene gas accelerates the ripening, and eventually the rotting of fruit and vegetables. Therefore if you don’t want your fruit and vegetables to ripen quickly, you need to control the release of the ethylene gas. The amusingly named Ethylene Gas Guardian (The Egg) is a small gadget that will absorb ethylene from fruit and veg, to reduce the rate at which they ripen.

The Egg contains something called zeolite, which is a type of volcanic ash. It’s this chemical that absorbs the ethylene from your fruit and veg. The sachets inside the Eggs need replacing every 3 months, but they can be safely disposed of around your garden plants!

By slowing down the ripening process, your food keeps for longer, which means you’re less likely to waste food. Less wastage saves money and looks after the environment too. Additionally, if there’s less waste, you’re cutting down on the need for waste disposal services.

The Ethylene Gas Guardian (The Egg) is available for around £4, with a year’s refills costing around £13.

To do their job, fridges and freezers need to be powered on constantly. If you have an unreliable power source, or you’re in a remote location, you’re going to have issues if you have food that need to be kept cool. Industrial Insulation Systems has a solution, which is basically a solar-powered refrigerator kit.

Using the sun’s energy, the solar panel charges an internal battery. Additionally, due to the size of the solar panel, it also provides some shade for the refrigerator. The refrigerator/freezer is able to maintain temperatures down to minus 20 degrees Celsius, which is what’s needed for 99.9% of food typically stored in a fridge or freezer.

A full charge of the batteries gives 24 hours continual chilling time, thanks to a bank of four 12V 100Ah batteries. The batteries are mounted out of the way at the base of the fridge. The solar panel itself is mounted on the frame of the refrigerator, keeping the unit compact and easy to move.

Unfortunately no pricing information is available on the website. A great idea though, and very suitable for remote locations, disaster relief, boats, humanitarian aid and domestic home use.

A designer by the name of Teo Song Wei has come up with a solar lunchbox that uses solar energy to keep food warm. Rather than letting last night’s dinner get cold by the time you eat it, this lunchbox keeps your food warm. Great if you like a curry for lunch, rather than sandwiches!

Although this is only a concept design, it’s an interesting idea. However, personally I’d be more interested in a solar lunch box where the contents are kept cool. There are many foods that you might have on a picnic (fruit, jelly, drinks, chocolate) that you’d want to stay cold. If there was a solar-powered cooling picnic hamper, then I’d be really interested.

I must say, the Electrolux Wind Washer Dishwasher puts a little more fun into washing the dishes with their high-pressure air and UV-based dish cleaning gadget! The gadget looks a lot like a car wash in some respects, since the cleaner uses a 3-step process to clean your dishes.

Step 1, a stream of high-pressure air is used to blast off your food debris into a holding bay. Step 2 uses a jet of steam to cut through the grease on the plates. Finally step 3 uses UV light to kill off any nasties left on the plate. The dishwasher only does 2 dishes at a time, since it’s designed for people living on their own or with a partner.

I like the idea of not using any chemicals (good for people with allergies), and using a lot less water. Even the food waste in the drip tray could be composted. However, as does the reviewer on YankoDesign, I question how much energy it uses!

Some smart designers by the names of Won-Jae Lee, Jun-Yong Lee, Sang-Jun Hahn, Sun-Kyu Kim and Yeo-Wool Kang have come up with an eco-friendly packaging solution for food that does not use any plastic. Essentially, the spoon or fork pops out from the handle of the food box. No need for plastic utensils!

The spoon is simply popped out from the handle, then folded to turn it into a handle. If you want a fork, you just need to cut out a V-shape from the end of the spoon. A great solution for dry foods, but I think that anything ‘wet’ will quickly render the utensils useless.

Although the practicality of this solution is limited, I think that the designers are to be congratulated for at least trying something different. Perhaps there’s an eco-friendly way to coat the cardboard so that it’s waterproof?

For any fan of beers, these glasses would make a great gift. There is almost no waste in the manufacture of these glasses from their previous life as bottles. The Eco Kettle is a kettle that saves energy by helping you to only boil the water you need. Research suggests that people boil around twice as much water as they need, which means 50% of the energy being used is wasted!

The kettle works by having a separate chamber of water. When you want to boil some water, you press a button to release the amount of water you need into the boiling chamber. The boiling chamber has a handy measuring guide built into the kettle that helps you to work out how much water you need.

Other than that, the kettle is pretty much the same as any other kettle. It’s really simple to use, and you should start saving money from the moment you use it. My calculations suggest it should pay for itself in a year, despite being roughly the same price as a decent kettle anyway.
