Industrial designer Dennis Cheng has designed a simple system to keep fruit and veg cool without using any electricity, in fact only using the cooling powers of evaporation. This concept is to help draw people away from a reliance on fridges and return to more natural methods of cooling and storing foods. This concept design has been named eva2o.

As fruit and vegetables ripen, they release a gas called ethylene. In a self-perpetutating cycle, ethylene gas accelerates the ripening, and eventually the rotting of fruit and vegetables. Therefore if you don’t want your fruit and vegetables to ripen quickly, you need to control the release of the ethylene gas. The amusingly named Ethylene Gas Guardian (The Egg) is a small gadget that will absorb ethylene from fruit and veg, to reduce the rate at which they ripen. (more…)

The Gota Dishwasher is a small worktop dishwasher for the kitchen. It’s great for people who have small kitchens and don’t have the space for a full-sized dishwasher. The Gota Dishwasher was designed by Ibsen Caldas. The small dishwasher is made from ABS polycarbonate and cleverly uses a water tank to efficiently use water. (more…)

The Hughie Sink is a creative idea that makes it easier to reuse waste water in the kitchen. It’s essentially a large sink bowl that features a carrying handle and a sink hole. When you’ve finished using your water for washing the dishes or cleaning your vegetables, you wander outside with the bowl and empty it onto your plants, lawn or into a grey water tank. (more…)

Designer Tez Patel has come up with an eco-friendly refrigerator gadget that allows you to save energy using multiple compartments. The assumption is that you don’t use all of your fridge at the same time. If you’re like me, you spread your food out into lots of different shelves. However, you might only have the equivalent of a single shelf of food at any given time.
Tez’s design allows for compartments that are not in use to be switched off. This means you only use enough energy to cool the parts of the fridge you are using. (more…)
