The Nighthawk is a wind-up LED torch that provides you with a bright, focused light whenever it is required. Because a dynamo is used to produce the electricity for this torch there are no worries over it running out of power when you need a torch most. The torch can also be used to provide charge for your Nokia mobile phone.

The Nighthawk by Powerplus uses both two traditional LED bulbs (5mm) and a ‘new generation’ 0.5W LED bulb. These give the torch a bright focused beam of light that is highly energy efficient. The torch charges its internal battery from the kinetic energy you provide by winding the handle of the torch. This dynamo power allows the torch to be easily and quickly recharged anywhere, with no concerns over sunlight, keeping the torch charged ready for use, or worries over batteries.

The Nighthawk is supplied with a standard Nokia phone adapter cable. This allows you to charge your Nokia phone (or any device that uses a Nokia charger to gain charge) from the electricity you have generated winding up the torch. From winding the handle of the torch for one minute you provide enough electricity to light the 5mm LEDs for 90 minutes, the 0.5w LED for 20 minutes and provide roughly 2-8 minutes of talk time on your phone, or half an hour of standby time. When the torch battery is fully charged it can provide 12 hours of light from the 5mm LEDs and 4 hours of light from the 0.5w LED.

The Nighthawk measures only 15.5cm x 5cm (6.1 in x 2 in) which allows it to be easily carried with you wherever it is needed. The torch provides you with a powerful light whenever it is required. Its use of LED bulbs and dynamo power allow the torch to provide light or phone charge that requires very little effort or forethought.

The 12 watt EnduraLED Light Bulb provides you with the lighting power of a 60 watt incandescent bulb. The most commonly used light bulb in homes is the 60w bulb and its energy saving counterparts. Mercury as it is a toxic metal needs to be treated carefully when it comes to disposing of it, to avoid it contaminating the ecosystem.

This LED bulb offers the same brightness (if not a little brighter) than a CFL bulb while working with approximately the same energy efficiency. The LED bulbs should also turn on straight away without the warm up time that CFLs need. The EnduraLED can also be used with dimmer switches, something most CFLs cannot currently achieve.

The EnduraLED bulb marks a significant change to the way we light our homes. It offers an effective low energy equivalent to CFL lighting while avoiding the negatives of CFLs. The bulbs offer a way forward towards energy efficient lighting that can really be considered to be eco friendly.

The FLEXI is an all in one lighting concept by designers Kyeore Kim, Jaesuk Han, Sungkuk Hong,  and Sena Joo. The idea is to provide many different forms of lighting from one source, to be a lightweight product to take when camping or for general use.

The FLEXI is basically a silicon sheet which features a row of LED lights at one end of it. The sheet of silicon is meant to be rectangular and very thin, to allow it to take up little room while being light weight. By having the LED lights incorporated into the design only along one edge it allows the sheet to be used in many different ways. By positioning the lights at one end of it when rolled up, the FLEXI can be used as a torch, the multiple LEDs giving it a bright beam of directed light. By rolling it with the LEDs along one edge you create a longline light, and by leaving the silicon mat flat you create a useful ambient light source.

Though LEDs do not require much electricity to work, they do require some. Thus far there is no suggestion of where a power source would be placed and incorporated into the design. It would be nice to see maybe a flexible solar panel also built into the light.

This Motion Sensing LED Light can be fine tuned for your requirements. The light can be used both outdoors and indoors and brighten any area in need of extra light or to be used as a warning to any motions around the area.

The Motion Sensing LED Light uses an infrared motion sensor which detects any movement near the device. The light uses LEDs to produce the light, this makes the light more energy efficient as LEDs do not require much electricity to illuminate them. The LEDs can be set to different brightness levels meaning you can have as dull or as bright a light as you wish. The sensitivity of the motion sensor can also be fine tuned to help you reach the sensitivity you require, this helps save on power by preventing unnecessary lightings. The time the light illuminates for can also be changed, it can be active for 20 seconds, 60 seconds, 90 seconds or set to be constantly on if that is required.

With this ability to be fine tuned and because it is suitable for both inside and outside use the light can be used for such things as alerting you of activity outside or can be used to illuminate any garden obstructions when you are out in your garden. It can also be taken with you when you go camping so you know if there are any movements outside. The light can also be used inside to illuminate areas that are not commonly in use but have low light levels, such as larders, by moving near the light it will brighten up any area. The light requires an AAA battery to operate and measures 8.5cm x 8.5cm x 5cm ( 3.3in x 3.3in x 2in).

The VX1932wm-LED is a 19-Inch WLED-Backlit monitor by ViewSonic. This is an energy efficient monitor that uses less electricity than other monitors of a similar size while providing excellent clarity in its display and sound.

The Ecobulb is a energy saving idea by Seokjae Rhee. The concept bulb takes advantage of the eco friendly credentials of LED bulbs. Working with a remote control the bulb uses these LEDs to produce a light source that is directional.

The Ecobulb concept is that when lighting a room a lot of light is often not needed, only sections of a room are usually ever requiring lighting at any time. The bulb uses LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) in a 6 compartmental bulb design. The bulb has 6 distinct and separate areas to it which can be controlled with the Ecobulb’s remote control to turn any of these sections on or control the brightness of a section.

LED bulbs have many advantages over the more commonly used energy saving bulb the CFL ( Compact Florescent Light/lamp). The life span of a LED bulb is longer than that of a CFL. CFLs also cause a problem when it comes to disposing of them due to them containing mercury (though this is a trace amount). The LED bulb does not have any such issues while working with approximately the same energy efficiency. The LED bulbs should also turn on straight away without the warm up time that CFLs need.

The Ecobulbs concept then also contributes to less electricity usage as only sections of the light are used at once. There is no light wastage, no light being used to illuminate areas of a room not in use. This, coupled with the brightness control, means that the one light bulb can then take the place of many different light functions, from a small pool of soft light like that of a lamp to a brightly lit room all at the push of a button. One problem may be finding the button to do this, especially if there is a frequent need to change the sections of light as remote controls do often go missing.

A common issue with solar-powered lights is that they often output a very weedy light beam. What I like about the PowerBee Solar Ray 36 is that the light output is equivalent to a 30 Watt mains-powered light bulb! Which is much higher than most other solar lighting. The Solar Ray 36 has, you guessed it, 36 high-brightness white LEDs, all powered from 3x AAA 750mAh rechargeable batteries.

The solar powered lighting is triggered by a motion sensitive Passive Infrared (PIR) unit, which is built into the light itself. Since the PIR motion detector is mounted as a bubble on the underside of the light, you effectively get 360 degrees of motion detection around the light. This means you don’t need to mess about with pointing the motion detector in the right direction to maximise the chance of switching the light on.

The light can be used to illuminate pathways, sheds, garages, patios and more. The Solar Ray 36 comes with a 5 metre cable that allows the 0.6 watt multi-crystaline silicon solar panel to be positioned for optimal sunlight. Thankfully, the solar panel is powerful enough to charge the batteries even with the limited sunlight in the UK!

The Eternaleds HydraLux-4 is a fresh innovation in the area of lighting, since it’s a 4W LED bulb that produces the equivalent light of a 25W incandescent A-Shape bulb.
