The Ecobulb is a energy saving idea by Seokjae Rhee. The concept bulb takes advantage of the eco friendly credentials of LED bulbs. Working with a remote control the bulb uses these LEDs to produce a light source that is directional.

The Ecobulb concept is that when lighting a room a lot of light is often not needed, only sections of a room are usually ever requiring lighting at any time. The bulb uses LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) in a 6 compartmental bulb design. The bulb has 6 distinct and separate areas to it which can be controlled with the Ecobulb’s remote control to turn any of these sections on or control the brightness of a section.

LED bulbs have many advantages over the more commonly used energy saving bulb the CFL ( Compact Florescent Light/lamp). The life span of a LED bulb is longer than that of a CFL. CFLs also cause a problem when it comes to disposing of them due to them containing mercury (though this is a trace amount). The LED bulb does not have any such issues while working with approximately the same energy efficiency. The LED bulbs should also turn on straight away without the warm up time that CFLs need.

The Ecobulbs concept then also contributes to less electricity usage as only sections of the light are used at once. There is no light wastage, no light being used to illuminate areas of a room not in use. This, coupled with the brightness control, means that the one light bulb can then take the place of many different light functions, from a small pool of soft light like that of a lamp to a brightly lit room all at the push of a button. One problem may be finding the button to do this, especially if there is a frequent need to change the sections of light as remote controls do often go missing.

A common issue with solar-powered lights is that they often output a very weedy light beam. What I like about the PowerBee Solar Ray 36 is that the light output is equivalent to a 30 Watt mains-powered light bulb! Which is much higher than most other solar lighting. The Solar Ray 36 has, you guessed it, 36 high-brightness white LEDs, all powered from 3x AAA 750mAh rechargeable batteries.

The solar powered lighting is triggered by a motion sensitive Passive Infrared (PIR) unit, which is built into the light itself. Since the PIR motion detector is mounted as a bubble on the underside of the light, you effectively get 360 degrees of motion detection around the light. This means you don’t need to mess about with pointing the motion detector in the right direction to maximise the chance of switching the light on.

The light can be used to illuminate pathways, sheds, garages, patios and more. The Solar Ray 36 comes with a 5 metre cable that allows the 0.6 watt multi-crystaline silicon solar panel to be positioned for optimal sunlight. Thankfully, the solar panel is powerful enough to charge the batteries even with the limited sunlight in the UK!

The Eternaleds HydraLux-4 is a fresh innovation in the area of lighting, since it’s a 4W LED bulb that produces the equivalent light of a 25W incandescent A-Shape bulb. The bulb is designed to last 35x longer than conventional incandescent bulbs (so 35,000 hours), saving approximately $157.00 over lifetime in bulb and electricity costs.

The Hydralux 4W bulb uses a standard E27 medium base socket, such as those found in desk lamps. To keep the bulb cool, the bulb uses completely harmless paraffin oil, which has also been tested to UL and ROHS standards. What’s also interesting is that the bulb is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and is fully dimmable.

The Dynamo Pedometer with Flashlight is a number of little gadgets rolled into one. It features a pedometer which will count the number of steps as you walk or go jogging. You can also determine how far you’ve travelled and how many calories you’ve burnt off too. Great for when you’re out hiking or camping! The pedometer is charged up by using the hand crank on the side. Therefore you’ll never run out of power to run it.

The Dynamo Pedometer also features a builtin torch (or flashlight). If you’re wearing the pedometer when you’re out walking anyway, you’ll always have a torch on you. So if it get’s dark, you’ll have a torch with you. If the batteries die, you can just use the hand-crank to charge it up again! Useful huh?

With the push towards LED lighting (as filament lamps are due to be banned in 2012 in most countries), there is incredible research going on into lighting that offers the equivalent light output and light colour, but at the fraction of the energy consumption. The Zetalux LED light uses only 7 Watts of power, but is comparable to a 50-60 Watt Light bulb! The light is high efficiency and does not consist of any harmful raw materials.

The light output from the Zetalux and Evolux (100W equivalent) has been optimised in both direction and in colour. Although these light bulbs cost $50 and $80 respectively (compared to around $1.50 for an incandescent lamp), the cost savings from reduced energy usage is incredible. Over the 10 year life of a Zetalux bulb, it will cost roughly $150 less in electricity!

For those of you who know more about light colour than I do, here are some statistics for the Zetalux bulb:

• Luminous Flux: 450 (Cool White), 350 (Warm White)
• Color Temperature: 3000 K (Warm), 6000 K (Cool)
• CRI: 75 – Cool , 80 – Warm
• Beam Angle – 180 degrees overall

Due to the fairly low light output of LEDs, it’s easy to see that LEDs offer great potential for micro-illumination, i.e. enough lighting for a very small area. LEDs offer very directional lighting, and this dictates what they can be used for without using special diffusers. However, Jason Bruges found a novel use for a wind powered LED light and has used them to light up a tower in Southbank (London, UK).

The concept is novel, but somehow, I don’t expect there will be any new LED patents for this gadget. It’s essentially a dynamo connected to a couple of LED lights.

The 20cm wind turbine lights up with just a gentle breeze. The eco fan has a 6cm blade, which will light up the 2 LEDs at the back of the turbine. The turbine uses translucent plastic, and so the lights shine through. The turbine doesn’t have any batteries, so if it’s dark and still, the LEDs don’t light up.

Chinavasion have released a solar powered LED lighting unit for your outdoor umbrella. The batteries in the light unit charge during the day, and at night you can switch on the LED lighting to illuminate underneath your existing patio umbrella.

The lighting unit is designed to fit around the pole of your patio umbrella using specially designed fixings. There are a total of 24 bright LEDs that provide bright downward illumination or diffused upward illumination if fitted the other way up.

The solar panel comes with 3 metres of cable that allow you to position the solar panel in the brightest part of your garden near the patio umbrella. The battery unit can also be charged via AC adaptor if required.

Lighting a large area with conventional lamps can be very costly to run in energy costs, in addition to installing the infrastructure and maintenance costs. However, with some careful planning, the use of green gadgets, such as solar powered LED bricks can be an attractive and practical technique for lighting pavements and other paved areas.

For the home, you can use solar bricks to light up your garden path, but as the photo above shows, it works perfectly well for any public area too. With many cities in the UK being regenerated, I encourage architects to use these energy saving bricks for lighting in public areas!
