The H3 VESA PC is a small compact computer that provides you with the performance you need while using a minimum of power. The PC contains all the powerful components you would expect while only using around 30 watts.

The H3 VESA PC has been created by Aleutia. It takes advantage of the Intel Duel Core i3 processor, which has integrated the GPU and memory controller onto the actual processor chip itself. This reduces the amount of components drawing power from the motherboard, allowing the system to provide quality results while using less electricity, it only uses 23 watts when idle and at full performance only draws 55 watts. The integrated GPU can provide playback of 1080p content in any media player.

The H3 PC uses a 2.93GHz Dual Core i3 Processor and can have up to 8GB of Ram, due to the processor the RAM is able to be really fast DDR3 RAM with a speed of 1333MHz which can offer you a real boost to performance. With this PC you have the choice between a quiet 5400RPM laptop hard drive or a completely silent Intel Solid State Drive. Though the SSDs cost more and offer less space they do allow for much faster read and write speeds which can enable programs to open almost instantly.

The H3 PC is perfectly suited for use as a home theater PC, or even for signage. It boasts Dual Monitor support via the DVI-D and HDMI port and optical audio. The PC is also future proofed, as along side its 4 USB 2.0 ports it has 2 USB 3.0 ports. The H3 is small enough to fit in your hands and is perfect for mounting behind a monitor. It is able to provide you with a great performance per watt ratio, allowing you to not have to compromise with performance speeds at all to have a low powered computer.

The T2 is a fanless dual core PC that uses substantially less electricity than a standard PC. This small and exceptionally quiet PC contains all the powerful components we expect within a PC today, while using only 21 watts on average.

The T2 by Aleutia is able to run silently while using very little energy due to its use of a passively cooled Intel Atom processor. The T2 also makes use of an integrated GPU and memory controller to further lower its power requirements. This ability also helps to make the computer a great choice for those who have a solar power system, as it can be run straight from a direct current battery without requiring the wasteful inverter most devices need. The T2 features two pairs of USB 2.0 ports at the front of the machine, while the back of the machine features PS/2 ports, VGA ports, a further 4 x USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit LAN, and Audio In/Out as well as the PCs 12V DC input.

The T2 has an industrial galvanized steel chassis and comes with a choice of mounting options to suit your needs. It can be VESA mounted or wall mounted depending on the type of brackets you select when purchasing. The PC can be supplied with either Windows 7 (either Pro or Home) or Ubuntu 10.10, alternatively it can be supplied without an OS installed allowing you to install whatever you wish.

The T2 is great for use as an ‘always on’ server due to the use of Wake-on-Lan (WOL), PXE network boot, and auto booting after power loss, this also means that it will turn on when power is sent to it, allowing it to be placed even in a difficult to reach area as you will not need to press a power up button. The T2 is a powerful compact PC that will run efficiently and quietly while requiring very little electricity.

The Igglu Modular PC is a concept to allow anyone to upgrade their computer systems easily. By using colour coded slots and easy to install blocks for the parts, the concept hopes to make upgrading a computer something anyone can do without needing any additional assistance.

The Igglu Modular PC is the concept of UK designer Rob Mansfield, it consists of a single tower that has color coded compartments designed to take swappable modules that are colour coded to match. These module blocks allow you to easily update the main parts of your PC, there is a colour coded slot for a hard drive, optical drives, a graphic card, PCI drives and for RAM. The aim is to allow anyone to upgrade their PC without any of the hassles normally associated with doing so, to hopefully reduce the amount of PCs that are just replaced after a few years.

Computing equipment is always advancing, every month it seems there are faster parts, higher amounts of memory, smaller sizes, increased efficiency. This leads to many computers becoming obsolete in only a couple of years. Upgrading a computer can be done, but many find the process difficult, not knowing what kind of hard drive they can use, what kind of memory, how much RAM their motherboard supports, or even how to install the parts they have purchased.

The Igglu hopes to change all that. Parts would be sold in colour coded blocks, each block easily pushed into its matching colour coded slot. There would be no need to take a computer apart or touch any of it internally (helping to prevent accidental damage) all parts sold in the blocks would work with the system, so no confusion over what you would need to buy. The concept even seems to suggest purchasing the parts through an online account, which would hopefully track what parts you currently have to ensure you are upgrading each one. The blocks that are returned would potentially be reused as a budget range, or recycled. This would help PCs be available to all, and reduce the amount of computing equipment that requires disposal.

The main tower has been designed to help it run using the least amount of electricity possible. The tower would be fan-less, the design of it offering passive cooling to the components. This allows it to operate quietly, without the noise of the fan constantly turning, and use less electricity than a standard fan cooled system.

The only concern would be the eventual need to upgrade the tower part, as in the concept that seems to house the processor and of course the motherboard. Given the concept ideals it would seem that this, like the parts, would then be either be returned to be used second hand or recycled, with an updated model sent out for your current parts to be slotted into.

The D1 PC by Aleutia is a extremely small and energy efficient computer. The D1 compacts all the normal features of a PC into one tiny quiet case.

The Aleutia D1 is under half the size of most other SFF PCs (Small Form Factor Personal Computers) Aleutia claim, measuring only 26.8cm x 31.8cm x 7cm (10.55in x 12.52in x 2.75in) and weighing only 1.8Kg (though Aleutia do also claim it weighs 2.4Kg) compared to other SFF PCs which can weigh around 8Kg. The PC though is not lacking in ability, the D1 comes with an Intel dual core 1.66GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 40GB SATA-II HDD, DVD-RW drive  and many other components that go into making this a suitable PC for office or light home use. The D1 comes with the Ubuntu Linux 9.10 OS as standard but has been tested to be fully compatible with the current Microsoft OSs from Windows XP to Windows 7.

By using energy efficient processors and combining them with laptop components like the DVD-RW drive, the D1 features a low power consumption, using only 26w (though Aleutia also claim it uses 34w, either way an exceptionally low power drain) which could mean the D1 uses only 25% of the energy of other SFF PCs. Because of the energy efficient processors, the D1 also produces less heat, meaning it requires only a small fan to cool the system. The smaller fan causes less sound than conventional desktops, and can only be heard whirring when your ears are very close to it.

Fit PC have done it again (see their Fit PC slim), this time with the release of the Fit PC 2. The Fit PC 2 features a 1.1GHz or a 1.6GHz processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 160GB SATA Hard Drive, Gigabit LAN and has a peak load of just 9 Watts.

Fit PC have a reputation for creating attractive and energy efficient computers, but now we have something with a bit of power. The Fit PC more than doubles the processing power of its predecessor without any significant increase in power consumption. The unit is fanless, and designed to minimise the heat produced to avoid wasting energy. At just 11.5 x 10.1 x 2.7 cm, the Fit PC 2 is smaller than 3 stacked CD cases!

The standard specification also includes DVI with graphics acceleration, 6 USB ports, a sound card. The Fit PC 2 comes with a WiFi option and can be ordered with Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux. Prices start at £270 + VAT in the UK.

The Eco Mouse features an eco button that will put your computer into standby mode when you press it. The button puts a computer into a special eco-mode, which is a state where your PC uses the least possible energy whilst still being switched on. The idea is that when you’re leaving the computer idle and switched on for a period of time, you put it into eco mode. When you need the computer, you press the button again to wake the computer up.

The eco mouse comes with special software that estimates your energy and CO2 emission savings as a result of using the eco mode. I doubt that the software takes into account the actual power consumption of your computer, therefore all calculations are just estimations.

The only trouble I see with this mouse is that you’ll accidentally activate the eco mode when you don’t mean to due to the location of the button. I think that the separate Eco Button is a much better idea. However, if you are leaving your computer switched on for a little while, it seems like a good idea.

Prices for the eco mouse start at £15.66 each, but that’s due to the supplier being a branding company. The Eco Button costs just £14.95.

ASUS have just officially announced the Eee Box 206, otherwise known as a “nettop” (short for internet desktop, as in netbook for internet notebook). The Eee Box 206 features a AMD ATI Radeon HD 3450 GPU graphics card with HDMI port. You also get a remote control and DVI-D output adaptor. You can tell that ASUS are going after the HDTV market here.

The processor is an Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz. 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 160GB hard drive, WiFi, BlueTooth, audio in/out, a headphone socket, but no DVD drive. Pretty impressive specifications, but I wonder if the hard drive is a low-power device? Would be nice to see some solid state variations too.

The best bit is that the Eee Box uses only 20W of power, and is made from eco-friendly and recycled materials. The nettop is already available now, in white or black, priced at around £310 ($438).

The Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II is a new energy-saving RAID hard drive, specifically targeted at the Mac and the Windows market. It features a FireWire 800 and eSATA port for fast data access, such as for video, animation and audio applications. The drive unit is designed to use Western Digital’s GreenPower drives, which use 30% less energy than conventional 3.5″ hard drives.

The drive features RAID 0 support, which stripes data across both internal hard drives. However, this has the disadvantage of being poor with fault tolerance. So if 1 hard drive dies, all the data is lost. However, RAID 0 is particularly fast, which is how the fast performance aspect of the drive unit is derived. However, if you want to mirror the disks with RAID 1 for strong fault tolerance, then the My Book will support that.

The WD My Book Studio Edition II (what a name! too long!) is user serviceable, so you can swap the drives in the unit whenever you like. The front of the unit also has a capacity guage, so you can see at a glance how much space is left on your storage system. You can purchase the My Book in 1TB and 2TB sizes, the latter being able to handle up to 240 hours of HD video.

The much publicised Dell Studio Hybrid is a stylish and compact desktop PC, easily usable for watching TV as well as the usual PC-type tasks. The Hybrid PCs come in a range of personalised colours, including a bamboo skin. This eco gadget is being touted as they most energy efficient and greenest PC yet.

Since the PC is 80% smaller than conventional desktops, there are fewer raw materials involved in the design. Sure it’s not quite as upgradable, but then you can buy a model with up to 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. So you won’t want to upgrade for a while anyway. It also comes with gigabit ethernet, WiFi using 802.11n, a Blu-ray disc reader in addition to a Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive. You also get a built-in 7-in-1 Media Reader, with a slot for the new high capacity and Hi Speed Secure Digital (SD) cards.

The Dell Hybrid PC also sports a lower power requirement, using 70% less energy compared to other desktop computers, although Dell don’t publish their actual power ratings. The power supply is an impressive 87% efficient meeting Energy Star 4.0 standards. I get the impression that the small size also allows the unit to cool down more efficiently compared to its bigger brothers, and therefore reducing wasted energy as heat.

The PC also comes in 95% recycled packaging (a common feature now) as well as a system recycling kit. I presume the latter is so that you can recycle the computer when you throw it out.

The Aleutia E2 is a fast little PC that uses just 8 Watts of power with a peak power usage around 15 Watts when used with external USB hard drives. To put it in context, it has roughly the same power consumption as an energy saving lightbulb. Many PCs and laptops draw around 300W and 200W respectively, so it’s a huge energy saver. It’s eco friendly technology has been inspired by developing countries as an answer to remote and cheap computing.

I’ve grabbed my own one of these fantastic little gadgets, and they only cost around £230 (around $400 US). It’s small form factor of just 11.5cm x 11.5cm x 3.5cm, weighing only 500 grams and drawing so little electricity makes it a perfect candidate for my private web server for development work and home automation.

The low power consumption is largely due to a lack of physical drives (i.e. no CD/DVD or hard drive). The storage is based on a 4GB Sandisk Extreme III Compact Flash Card, which is used for the Ubuntu Linux operating system. I’m a big fan of Ubuntu, as it’s one of the easiest to use Linux operating systems around. It also comes with a 500MHz ultra low voltage processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 3x USB2 ports, network port, sound card, and graphics adaptor!

The Aleutia E2 runs on 5V dc, so you could easily create a power adaptor for a car or caravan to use whatever power supply you have. Aleutia also offer a range of packages where you can get a monitor or solar panel kit in addition to the E2. With the USB ports, you can imagine a use involving bluetooth or GPS, etc. You don’t need to have any monitors plugged in to use it, as you could use the Aleutia as a console-only system, or just use VNC.

It’s not quite fast enough to be used as a development machine, but it does allow easy web browsing and word processing. You might find multitasking a little slow, but a couple of applications are absolutely fine. In a nutshell, really top kit!
