There are some eco-friendly gadgets that are just completely barmy, and the Growing Ring is a perfect example of that. Supposedly designed for people who live in metropolitan areas, the ring is meant to give a little comfort to the owner when there are no trees or plants around.

The ring probably uses a kind of moss for the plant, but it needs frequent watering just like any other plant. I can imagine that it’d be very easy to lose the plant whilst wearing the ring every day. There’s very little to stop the plant falling out from what I can see. However, if you have the strong desire to wear a plant on your hand, the growing ring will set you back $179.00. I think I’d prefer a house plant.

Volksgarden Rotating Garden

The Volksgarden Rotating Garden is a circular hydroponics system that allows you to grow up to 80 plants in less than 9 square feet! The Volksgarden Rotating Garden rotates completely every 45 minutes, making the most efficient use of light, water and nutrients. The rotating garden is perfect if you don’t have a great deal of space, but at a diameter of 48″, and being 76″ tall by 30″ wide, you’re going to need some space for it!

The Volksgarden wheel is made from food-grade molded plastic, with the structural components being made of power-coated steel. Each compartment is designed to hold 3 inches of nutrient medium. Nutrients and water are added to the lower water tray, where all plants receive nutrients as they pass through the tray.

The aspect where the rotating garden is not quite so eco-friendly is where it needs a high power lamp (400W, 600W or 1000W), although there are some florescent lamps you could use instead. Just a snip at $1995 USD, but you do get a 10% if you buy two!

Rotating Solar Powered Display Turntable

I do love these odd eco gadgets. Well, perhaps love to hate. This solar-powered turntable will rotate up to 200g of junk using nothing but the sun’s energy. 200g is very little weight, so you couldn’t use it for a plant or anything.

It’s just what you always wanted! You’ll be able to watch your niknaks rotating all day long (whilst there’s some sunlight anyway). Not very practical, not very useful. No doubt made from plastic and no eco benefit whatsoever. Oh well, it make me laugh!

Eco-Friendly Scented Pencils – Smencils

If you want a fantastic eco-friendly gift that’s a little different, then these scented pencils are made from recycled newspaper and use biodegradable erasers at the end. The pencils are designed to keep their scent for at least 2 years, and are available in scents such as Bubble Gum, Blueberry, Orange, Cherry, Toasted Marshmallow, Chocolate, Strawberry, Cinnamon Candy, Grape, Pineapple, Raspberry, Green Apple and many more!

Given that there are so many ‘flavours’, you’ll typically get a random selection of the different pencils available. I’m sure that these will go down well with any child or adult with any artistic flair. The only downside with these pencils is that they come in plastic containers, which pretty much defeats the eco-friendly nature of the pencils.

They’re around $7 for 10 pencils in the US or around £14.99 for 5 pencils in the UK (sadly a lot more expensive!).

10 Completely Bizarre Eco Gadgets

With the focus on being green, there are plenty of eco-friendly gadgets that are hitting the market. However, some companies seem to be creating really bizarre gadgets in the name of being green, but serve very little real purpose.

Some people might find these gadgets to be funny, attractive or cool. Me personally? I think they’re completely barmy! So here you go, 10 very questionable ‘eco-friendly’ gadgets.

1. Green Capsule – Mini Mobile Garden

The Green Capsule is a tiny plant inside a keychain or pendant. Essentially it’s a seed and a small quantity of soil. However, once the seed germinates, you’ll need to remove it and replace it with another seed. It serves no practical purpose, and at $84, it’ll make your eyes water too!

2. Solar Panel Glasses

The Solar Panel Sun Glasses were a gadget that I wrote about recently. I understand why having a solar panel on your glasses a good idea, but I think that the actual design of these glasses is really silly. I’d be very embarrassed to wear these!

3. Solar Powered Light Up Squirrel

A Solar Powered Light Up Squirrel, do I really need to say anything at all? Costing $55 for a light up mammal? I would love to know what was going through the designer’s mind.

4. Lemon-Powered Clock

The lemon-powered clock is a gadget that’s actually touted as a product rather than an educational toy! Why you’d want lemons rotting on your kitchen surfaces to give you the time, I have no idea! Surely it’s greener to use rechargeable batteries than to use an endless supply of lemons (unless of course you have a lemon tree). However, if the clock re-sets every time you change the lemons, it’s hardly practical.

5. Paper-Bag Light

This is another example of a mad design, namely a lamp made from a paper bag! Sure, the paper is probably treated to be a fire retardant, but why would you want a light made from a paper bag? It looks like something a 5 year old made!

6. Solar Climbing Orangutan

The Solar Climbing Orangutan is purely a gadget, using a solar panel as a gimmick rather than with the environment in mind. Probably suitable as an office gadget, it’s sure to be noticed, but not for the right reasons.

7. Flare Storm – Motion Powered Radio

I think the Flare Storm radio came from someone with artistic flair, rather than a flair for practicality. The radio charges up by moving it on the ground like a toy car. Great if you have children with endless energy to charge it up for you. However, I think that conventional solar powered and wind-up radios are far more practical.

8. Solar Powered Dancing Panda

The Solar Powered Dancing Panda simply dances when it gets solar power. Nothing else. Sure, it’s a little cute, but it’s also very useless. Simply a moving dust-collector.

9. Cardboard Laptop Case

Right, I like the idea of recycling here, using an old box to create a Cardboard Laptop Case. However, that’s where the practicality ends. When it rains, you’ll end up with a soggy mess! However, I doubt you’ll have much money left after buying an expensive Apple Mac either, so I can understand that you’d need to improvise a case.

10. Toilet made from cardboard

On the cardboard theme, I’d thought I’d end with the best (or worst) of them all. It’s not the first time that I’ve covered a cardboard toilet, however, this one seems a little worse to me. Sure, it’s made form recyclable materials, but where’s the privacy? And how do you dispose of them hygienically?

If you have any really bad jokes in the toilet humour category, please keep them to yourself. Actually… on second thoughts, please share!

Citrus-Powered Eco-Friendly Clock

If you don’t already have a solar powered or wind powered clock, then you might fancy this rather odd lemon powered clock. The clock exploits the lemon’s citric acid as well as the copper and zinc on the clock to generate enough current to power the clock for a week.

However, a waste of lemons I think. Just think how annoying it’ll be to re-set the time whenever you replace the lemons?

Collapsible Solar-Powered Traffic Cone

Brando are at it again with another of their eco friendly gadgets, the Solar Powered Traffic Code. The collapsible traffic cone can easily be stored in the boot of your car without using up much space. When there’s an emergency, just pluck it out of your car, and pull the top of the cone upwards.

The built-in solar panel charges up an internal battery, allowing the cone to flash using bright LEDs within the cone. This would help the cone draw more attention when lighting is poor. The cone is bright orange with reflective stripes too, so it’s about as visible as you can make it. Costing just $55, it’s a perfectly useful product to keep tucked away for emergencies.

USB Flash Memory made from Wooden Sticks

Now this is something you don’t see every day. Flash Sticks are a great eco-friendly technology, USB flash memory sticks literally housed in a stick! The wood for these flash sticks are harvested from silver birch, collected from the woodlands in Berkshire, England.

The wood material is chosen from wooden branches that match a specific diameter. The wood is then left to season (i.e. dry out) for several months. The branches are then cut into 8cm (3.2 inches) ready for the USB element to be added. The sticks are hollowed, sanded down, waxed, and then receive the USB storage circuitboard.

I couldn’t see any idea of what storage capacity they are, but they cost £17.50 including delivery.

Update 4th Nov 2008 – I’ve since discovered that the flashsticks are 2GB in capacity.

Keep Cool with a Solar Fan for Baseball Caps

Every so often, someone goes a little mad with the green gadgets and makes something that’s just plain silly. The solar cap fan with a clip is designed to keep you cool by clipping onto a baseball cap and blowing air into your face. However, you will look strange, and no doubt you’ll get some very confused glances and laughs.

It’s a small fan (7.3cm in diameter), and probably quite effective. However, I’m sure that there’s a high chance it’d get knocked off or blown off; that’s assuming it doesn’t obscure your vision!
