iFan – Wind Powered Charger Case for iPhones Concept

The iFan is a concept design for a case for an iPhone that uses a wind turbine to provide charge for your device. The iFan allows you to continually top up the charge of your iPhone while you are out and about, as long as there is a breeze!

The iFan has been designed by Tjeerd Veenhoven to allow you to extend the charge of your iPhone by taking advantage of any wind around you. The iFan consists of a soft rubber skin that includes a energy wind fan, the case is then put onto the phone to allow it to charge whenever the fan blades are moved by the breeze.

The iFan requires around 6 hours to charge your iPhone fully, though this time reduces when subjected to faster winds. The designer is planning to redesign the blades to make the fan more efficient to further shorten the charging time. The iPhone would need to be placed or held in an area with at least a breeze for it to charge, and held in position for the blades to move. This could be difficult to achieve at times, though when out engaging in outdoor activities it may be easier.

The iFan concept is certainly an intriguing idea for ways to help top up your iPhone’s charge. If the design can be improved, perhaps with attachments for a bike, or arm and by improving the blades efficiency, the iFan may be a much needed eco-friendly charger.

Bicycle Charger Kit By Nokia

The Bicycle Charger Kit is an easy to install kit that allows you to turn your pedaling power into an eco- friendly method of charging your mobile. This kit allows you to charge you phone while you are on the go, or listen to music while cycling without fear of draining your phone’s battery.

The Bicycle Charger Kit by Nokia comprises of 3 parts, a bottle (side wall) dynamo, a charger and a phone holder. The bottle dynamo requires placement onto the front of the bicycle, on the fork, using a mounting bracket that is provided. This component converts the kinetic energy of the wheel turning as you pedal into electrical energy that can be used to charge your phone.

The phone holder and charger require mounting onto the handle bars with a bracket that is included. The phone holder allows you to have your phone right in front of you as you cycle, great for listening to music on the go or to watch its charging progress. The holder protects the phone from any bumps and vibrations from the cycling due to its rubberized secure design, the holder also comes with a clear bag to help protect your phone from things such as dirt. The phone takes the electrical power it requires through a 2mm Nokia charging pin that is attached to the charger, this pin can be converted using a Nokia charger adapter (CA-146C) to allow it to charge microUSB charger devices, such as the Nokia N97.

The speed at which you pedal effects the amount of electricity produced to charge you phone. The faster you pedal the quicker your phone will charge. Exact charging times depend both on the speed at which you cycle and on the model of phone you are charging, Nokia predict that with only 20 minutes of cycling at roughly 10 km (6 miles) per hour you can provide enough charge to give a Nokia 1202 about 1 hour of talk time or 74 hours of standby time. Nokia recommend maintaining a speed of roughly 6km (4 miles) per hour for the charger to provide sufficiently effective charging. The charger will function between speeds of 6-50 km per hour.

Green up your Apple iPad with a Solar Charger

Apple fanatics worldwide have been anxiously waiting for the day that the iPad becomes available, and finally it’s here! The Apple iPad allows you to surf the Internet, read books, look at maps, and pretty much anything else you can imagine. Those who are concerned for the environment are thrilled by the fact that the iPad is more eco-friendly than most electronic devices. Apple has worked hard to design the iPad with features that will reduce its environmental impact.

What can you do to add to the ‘green’ factor of the Apple iPad? One thing you can do is invest in a solar charger. Now readers of EnviroGadget are no strangers to solar chargers, or using them for their gadgets and homes. The iPad boasts an impressive battery that will last 10 hours between charges. However, if you are often traveling, camping, or enjoying areas that have a severe lack of electrical outlets, or you just want to stay off the grid, then a solar charger is going to be essential. It may not be as fast as a wall socket, but hey, it’s green environmentally friendly! Plus… as I think we can all agree, solar chargers are just cool.

As you probably are already aware, one of the most popular, affordable, and highest quality solar chargers is the Solio lineup of products. Freeloader Pro – Solar Powered Charger

The Freeloader Pro is a solar powered charger for portable electronic devices. This device is a more advanced model of a previously reviewed charger, the Freeloader. This charger can be used with a wide range of portable electronic devices including digital cameras, SLR and even video camera batteries due to the CamCaddy that is provided with it.

The Freeloader Pro has all the advantages of the Freeloader and more. A wider range of digital, SLR and video cameras are quickly charged by simply placing their battery into the CamCaddy and plugging that into the Freeloader Pro. When the Freeloader Pro is fully charged it can provide a full charge for most digital cameras and 80%-90% of charge for SLR and video cameras.

Of course cameras are only a small area of devices it charges, most portable electronics are catered for, mobile phones, iPhones, MP3/MP4 players, iPods, GPS devices, PDAs, hand-held gaming devices and even e-book readers. The improvements of the Pro version truly extend the products effectiveness at providing electricity for all portable electronics anywhere (for example the Freeloader could provide an iPod 18 hours of charge when fully charged, the Freeloader Pro can provide it with 28), and make the charger both more powerful and more user friendly.
