The Spice-Versa is a concept for a hydroponic herb growing system specifically designed for those with small homes. Being able to grow fresh herbs at home has eco-friendly benefits and can help fragrance your room with refreshing herb scents.

The Spice-Versa is a concept design by Ana Arguezo for a system of growing herbs at home without taking up a large amount of space. The system allows the herb planter to hang with the plants growing upside down, the planter can be hung from a ceiling or a wall anywhere, high up enough to not take up any needed space but still allow access to the herbs themselves.

The Spice-Versa is made up of 6 sections surrounding a central light, the light used is a mercury spot light which is perfect for helping plants to grow. Each section is filled with a biodegradable plant gel, this provides the plants with all the nutrients they require and supplies water to the growing plants. The gel locks away water efficiently, allowing you to only need to water the herb garden once every month.

Growing plants indoors is a great natural way to keep the air fresh and clean, the herbs also help add their fragrance to a room, helping to make it more pleasant to live in. By growing your own herbs you have a constant source of fresh herbs for cooking, herbs that have not incurred any travel miles to get to your plate.

The Spice-Versa concept would allow anyone to be able to grow herbs easily in their home, no matter what the size. The herbs themselves would add a green touch to any room, keeping the air pure and refreshing, or to any plate, helping to liven up any meal with home fresh flavour.

The positive effects of plants in a room are well known, for example they can help to produce oxygen, provide a room with fragrance, or just simply provide beautiful life to a living area. The Bambu system has been designed to allow freedom in construction, the part are easily assembled and can be constructed in a number of ways to allow you to achieve the planter style you want. To minimize any negative impact on the environment from the production of the planter materials such as bamboo have been used in the construction. Bamboo is a sustainable material that is quick to grow, making it a great material to use for items such as this.

The Bambu concept would allow the elderly, or those with lessened mobility to be able to grow plants with ease in their own home. This activity can have a beneficial effect on the users and the system can help produce anything from beautiful flowers to crops of fresh vegetables. This Seedbed comes as a roll of grow mat that includes all you need to grow tasty salad leaves with a minimum of effort. By just rolling the seedbed mat out and securing it you have done most of the work needed to ensuring you have a supply of salad leaves for the summer.

The Seedbed roll is a grow mat that has had seeds for different salad leaves already added to it, spaced out as the plants require for growth. On top of this it has a coating that as the leaves grow becomes an inbuilt polytunnel, to ensure optimum growing. Because of this the seedbed roll helps anyone to grow salad leaves easily. There are no worries with weeding as the mat helps to block any weeds from growing up, the polytunnel helps to keep the leaves warm and moist, plus both help to keep any pests to a minimum. This ensures a high quality of home grown salad leaves with a minimum of effort, no need to go weeding or spray your plants with any pesticides.

To plant the Seedbed roll all you need to do is clear a patch of earth to lay it flat out on, water the ground so it is nice and damp and roll the mat out. Using some of the soil pin down the edges of the mat to stop it moving or blowing away. Small rocks could even be used to help anchor it down. That is all the hard work done! From then on its a simple case of keeping it watered. As the seeds germinate they grow down into the soil and secure the mat to the ground, the leaves that grow up push the layer of plastic polytunnel film up creating the polytunnel itself. Due to perforations in this plastic film it can expand as the leaves grow tall, creating a great growing environment for your salad leaves. To access the salad the plastic film just needs to be rolled back to uncover the leaves within.

The Seedbed Roll comes in three different types, Mediterranean salad, English summer salad, and Oriental salad. The Mediterranean salad includes Chicory Italico Rosso, Rocket Dentellata, Lettuce Catalogna Cerbitta and Amaranth. The English summer salad includes Lettuce Red Batavia, Green Batavia, Tango Lettuce and Cos Lettuce. The Oriental salad includes Mustard Red Frills, Mustard Green Frills, Mizuna, Tatsoi and Pak Choi. Each Seedbed roll is estimated to produce around 50 bags of salad leaves. Remember you can simply pick the outer leaves off and leave the plant to grow, there is no need to cut off the plant totally each time you want some salad. This helps you to get the most from your plants.

Jin-wook Hwang is a designer that has come up with the idea of a seed bomb to allow the artificial replanting of vegetation in areas that have become arid.

Man-made activities such as deforestation can turn landscapes into a desert or ecosystem with very little life. The seed bomb uses a biodegradable plastic pod to rapidly and easily replant an area with seedlings to create a new ecosystem. The pods contain some soil and nutrients to encourage the seeds to germinate and grow.

As the seedling grows into a full plant, the pod biodegrades around it, allowing the plant to mature. Additionally, the plastic pods act as a mini-greenhouse, which gives the seeds and seedlings the additional warmth to grow into strong plants before being exposed to the harsh environment outside the pod.

I wonder if the main ‘rockets’ could be made out of cardboard? As littering the area with plastic is not a great idea. Using paper or cardboard would be useful, as it would break down easily and quickly.
