Tony’s Farm Eco-Packaging is a step towards a more eco-friendly packaging for the leading organic farm in China. The farm wished to use a packaging that was more in fitting with its environmentally aware philosophy. This pulp molded box allows the produce to be safely transported while being reusable, stack-able and sustainable.

Tony’s Farm Eco-Packaging has been envisioned by designer Matthias Burhenne to allow Tony’s Farm in China to be able to transport their organic fruit and vegetables safely to their customers. The molded pulp packaging created from sustainable sources is moisture resistant, helping it to safely hold the produce, it is suitable for reuse and once it has come to the end of its usefulness the packaging can be easily recycled, or composted. Tony’s Farm Eco-Packaging has been designed to allow it to be stack-able, so that the amount of space the empty packaging takes is kept to a minimum.

The boxes are designed to be used to take the produce to the customers, and to be returned for reuse. The packaging boxes though could be useful in a variety of ways in a home. These boxes could make a suitable alternative to plastic bags or plastic boxes often used to transport produce. Though many supermarkets do allow you to reuse cardboard boxes when in store those using online delivery find their produce transported in many plastic bags, carried in plastic carriers. Many stores will collect the plastic bags for recycling, though reducing the amount of plastic used would still be of significant benefit to the environment. It is not known however why the produce pictured has been securely encased in differing plastic wrappers, the boxes would allow you to place in fruit and vegetables unwrapped.

The Universal Packaging System allows you to pack objects that have an odd shape effectively and help you to have the right sized box on hand at all times. The system comes as a flat sheet that due to its construction can be formed into a range of different shapes.

The Universal Packaging System is a concept created by designer Patrick Sung. The system is a sheet of recyclable corrugated cardboard which has inbuilt patterning. These patterns allow the sheet to be wrapped and formed around even awkward shapes securely. The patterning also allows you to construct a range of box shapes out of the one sheet, helping to ensure that you can always construct a box suitable for what you wish to package.

This concept helps you to save on space, with only a few flat sheets requiring storage for use instead of maybe requiring a range of boxes. As it can be formed around oddly shaped items it can also help save on the use of packaging materials, as often these objects would have to be placed in a larger box and padded securely out will some form of filling material (like polystyrene).

The Universal Packing System should take up less room during transportation to destinations, such as shops, than constructed boxes because it is flat. This would help reduce the number of vehicles required for distribution of packaging items such as boxes. The recyclable system should help reduce the amount of packaging options anyone requires, and lower the quantity of non recyclable packaging they may need to use.

These smart packaging ideas use corrugated cardboard instead of any plastics for packaging popular consumer gadgets. The designer Emile Bertrand-Villemure wanted to protect the environment, re-use cardboard and create attractive-looking packaging in a single design.

Since most gadgets use a combination of plastic bags, expanded plastic foam and air-filled plastic padding, it would be good to achieve the same degree of protection without using any plastic. Since you can easily cut and layer cardboard, it’d be really easy to create complex shapes that are moulded to the gadget you’re trying to protect. The packaging might be a little heavier, but it would certainly be a lot more eco-friendly. We just need to use an eco-friendly glue too!

I think that Emile is really on to something!

Some smart designers by the names of Won-Jae Lee, Jun-Yong Lee, Sang-Jun Hahn, Sun-Kyu Kim and Yeo-Wool Kang have come up with an eco-friendly packaging solution for food that does not use any plastic. Essentially, the spoon or fork pops out from the handle of the food box. No need for plastic utensils!

The spoon is simply popped out from the handle, then folded to turn it into a handle. If you want a fork, you just need to cut out a V-shape from the end of the spoon. A great solution for dry foods, but I think that anything ‘wet’ will quickly render the utensils useless.

Although the practicality of this solution is limited, I think that the designers are to be congratulated for at least trying something different. Perhaps there’s an eco-friendly way to coat the cardboard so that it’s waterproof?
