The Leaf LED Light is a stylish modern desk lamp that uses LEDs to produce a bright white light while using very little energy. The lamp is fully adjustable allowing you to be able to use it for a variety of tasks.

The Leaf LED Light by Herman Miller has been created to provide stylish modern lighting that is environmentally friendly. The light uses 20 LEDs to produce its illumination, it has 10 blue LEDs that provide a cool intensive light, and 10 yellow LEDs that help to give the light a warm feeling. The light can be adjusted to provide you with any combination of these, also allowing you to select the strength of the light, this is all achieved through the touch sensitive pad located on the base of the lamp. Due to the use of LEDs the lamp will never be very hot to the touch, adding extra safety to your home or office.

The Leaf LED Light can be adjusted to light any angle you wish, the lower blade swivels 180 degrees and pivots 27.5 degrees forward, 23 degrees backward, while the upper blade pivots 210 degrees. The lamp is thought to use only 40% of the electricity a standard lamp bulb would as it draws only 12 watts and the LEDs will last around 100x longer than a standard bulb. The lamp furthers its eco credentials with its composition, it is crafted from 37% recycled materials and 95% of the lamp can be recycled when it has reached the end of its useful life.

The Leaf LED Light is available in 5 colours: black, polished aluminium, red, nickel, and white and each lamp measures 53.5 cm x 22 cm (21 in x 8.7 in). The lamp is an aesthetically pleasing object to have, be it in the home or at work. The lamps ability to adjust allows you many lighting options, and helps to ensure it will always provide the right lighting for the job. With its use of recycled materials and its low energy usage its a stylish option for those who wish to be eco-friendly.

The restaurant furniture supplier Go In, in collaboration with Münchener Boulevard Möbel GmbH are launching a new product range of furniture using an wood-less eco-friendly material called RESYSTA. The RESYSTA material looks and feels like wood, yet is composed of materials that don’t even include wood! The new RESYSTA products are designed to protect rainforests by reducing the amount of wood needed for high quality furniture.

The RESYSTA is made from several materials, most notably 60% rice husks, roughly 22% rock salt, and then about 18% mineral oil. There are probably a couple more secret ingredients too! The resulting material is completely recyclable, and very resilient against the elements, namely sun, rain, snow and salt water (such as on coastal properties). Unlike medium density fibreboard (MDF), RESYSTA does not swell when it gets wet. Additionally, RESYSTA does not split, tear or rot. The manufacturers are so certain of their new creation, that their furniture comes with a 15 year warranty!

Unsurprisingly, the material has taken 10 years to develop, and I expect to hear a great deal more about RESYSTA in the near future. The RESYSTA material was recently shown at the Hotelympia 2010 Show in London, where GO IN was awarded this year’s innovation award.

GO IN are a German-founded company, who have been around for over 35 years. They supply all kinds of commercial and contract furniture, like the furniture you see both indoors and outdoors at pubs, clubs, hotels, restaurants, airports, showrooms and other large buildings where you typically sit down on something solid!

Great to see a new modern material that’s a viable alternative to wood. Given the massive deforestation that still continues with the rainforest, everything that we can do to help keep our natural habitats gets my vote.

Fuji have released a new battery product called the Fuji EnviroMax Eco-Respectful Batteries. The batteries have been designed to be equivalent or better in performance compared to conventional batteries, but being 100% eco-friendly. The batteries contain no harmful mercury or cadmium compounds, nor are they packaged in harmful and non-recyclable PVC. Essentially, if they were disposed of in normal waste systems, they wouldn’t harm the environment.

It’s about time that someone re-designed batteries to be more eco-friendly. Fuji are making a big deal of the fact that their manufacturing process does not release any ozone depleting compounds and they operate under strict standards of environmental responsibility.

The batteries are no more expensive than conventional batteries, and are available in all the standard sizes (AAA, AA, C, and D). You can get the batteries directly from Amazon.

The Neuton CE 6 Mower is a rechargeable battery-powered lawn mower for the garden. Rather than using a petroleum-based fuel, the mower just uses batteries. A single charge of the 360kWh battery is enough to mow up to 15,000 sq. ft. or 1/3 acre of grass.

Theoretically, you could use solar panels to charge these batteries to be completely eco-friendly, but if it takes 12 hours to charge a battery via the mains, then it would probably take 20 to 30 hours to charge via a large solar panel.

The internal rechargeable battery can be charged in about 12 hours, and supposedly cost just 10 cents per full charge. The manufacturers also claim that the battery is 95% recyclable (why not 100%?) and will last up to 5 years with proper care. A spare battery will cost you around $100. The mower itself, which comes with a battery and charge will cost you the best part of $500.

Since the lawn mower is not directly connected to the mains, its ideal for people with large or remote gardens. I can’t imagine professional gardeners using one though, as they’d get through 10 batteries a day!

With how pervasive mobile phones are, it’s about time there was a phone that was completely green. The Motorola MOTO W233 Renew is a phone made from recycled plastic, made from 100% recyclable materials, comes with eco-friendly packaging, RoHS compliant, and comes with a postage-paid envelope so that you can send your old phone back for recycling.

The phone is a solid performer, despite not being as flashy as other mobile phones. The W233 is made from recycled watercooler jugs, and has been designed to be completely recyclable. The phone features Dual Band GSM 850/1900 capability, MP3 player, 9 hours talk time, 65K colours, up to 2 GB removable memory and measures 1.77″ x 4.37″ x 0.58″ in size.

Currently the phone is targeted at the US cellphone market on the T-Mobile network. I look forward to seeing it in the UK and Europe!

AltusLumen have released a new portable PAD-L LED torch gadget, which is the brother to their TRI-L Contemporary Personal Light. The PAD-L adds a few more features that makes it more usable, including adding weatherproofing, adjustable light output, integral 360 degree hinge and user replaceable 4xAAA batteries.

Compared to the TRI-L, the PAD-L adds an extra 92 hours of battery life (so 100 hours in total), a flashing light mode and is also $50 cheaper at $49 (and even cheaper on Amazon). The PAD-L is made from recycled and recyclable aluminum and polycarbonate. The whole light is 75% at the end of it’s life too. Due to using high quality LEDs and anodized aluminium, there are no toxic heavy metals in the construction.

I like the the replaceable AAA batteries, as it allows you to use existing rechargeable batteries, rather than having yet another device that needs charging. There is a solar panel accessory you can buy that will charge the PAD-L, but you could use any AAA solar battery charger if portability is important. Using recyclable and recycled materials also gets my vote.

The AltusLumen PAD-L is definitely an example of an environmentally concious and practical eco gadget.
