The log maker allows you to pack these materials into a dense log that is suitable for burning. The logs require a wrapping of newspaper to help hold them together, but inside any items that could be burned can be placed in. Depending on what is inside the logs they can burn for up to an hour. The wet and dry log maker can use wet items as well as dry to form logs, allowing you to use wet leaves or other such waste to form a log for burning.

This log maker has been formed from 100% recycled plastic, helping to reduce its environmental impact. Burning household waste will of course produce a lot of carbon which is not good for the environment, however burning wood produces a lot of carbon while reducing the amount of trees available to make use of it. It is estimated that around 30% of all household waste could be used in these logs to produce heat for a house, this coupled with the reduction of wood required for burning makes this a better choice for those who use a wood burning stove.

I’ve had the good fortune to review a new eco-friendly mobile phone by Sony Ericsson. The Sony Ericsson Elm looks like just any other full-featured mobile phone, but has a whole raft of eco-friendly features. Features include use of recycled plastics, electronic manual on the phone, no hazardous chemicals, minimised packaging and water-based paints.

In terms of appearance, the Elm is a compact and attractive phone with a black plastic front, and a metallic rear. The large screen is bright and easy to read. I’d suggest you want a screen protector for the screen, as I get the impression that it might scratch easily. The buttons on the phone are perfect for us chaps with large fingers. The buttons do make a subtle click when pressed (tactile feedback is what I miss with the iPhone). Therefore I was typing out a text message really quickly.

I’ve never owned a Sony Ericsson phone, but I found the menus to be very intuitive and I was whizzing around the phone within a few seconds (without reading the instructions!). It became quite clear that to fully appreciate the phone, that you will need a contact/PAYG service where you have data. Many of the applications need internet access, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Maps, etc.

The digital camera is pretty impressive. At a resolution of 5 megapixels, it’s pretty reasonable for a phone camera. However, I found the sharpness of the image and auto focus to be exceptionally excellent. Autofocus is one of those things with phone cameras that are generally a little rough around the edges, but this phone solves that problem.

In terms of green features, it’s good to see a phone avoiding hazardous materials like lead and mercury. What I did particularly like is the Walk Mate Eco application, which is essentially a pedometer. So when you go for a walk, the application can tell you how far you’ve walked. The application also tells you how much carbon dioxide you’ve saved by walking. If you’re the kind of person who likes to beat high scores in a game, then the pedometer application will push you to walk more and more!

So all in, the Sony Ericsson Elm is a decent looking and practical mobile phone. I think there’s a lot more to come in terms of eco-friendly features in the future, but I think that the Elm is a big step in the right direction.

The IRISO Water Dripper is a system that helps you to convert an old plastic bottle into a device to keep your plants watered. The system helps to prevent over watering and encourages more efficient use of water. It achieves this as there is no loss of water through evaporation nor is water being used in areas it is not required.

The Vac From The Sea is a concept by Electrolux to create vacuum cleaners from recycled plastic. Rather than using any old plastic they specifically wish to create vacuums from the plastic they will be gathering from the sea, either from floating plastic expanses or from shore lines.

With the Vac From The Sea concept, Electrolux hopes to highlight two major problems with plastic. Firstly the demand for plastic to recycle into more sustainable goods actually outstrips supply, meaning many who wish to create products from recycled plastic can struggle to do so. Secondly, and more importantly, there is a huge amount of plastic in the worlds waters. The oceans of this planet hold great amounts of plastic – there are vast floating island of plastic some, Electrolux informs us, are several times larger than the state of Texas. There is also a large quantity of plastic washed up on the worlds shorelines.

This plastic causes enormous problems for the environment, killing wildlife and destroying surrounding ecosystems. With only around 1% of plastic being recycled the amount of plastic going to waste is staggering. With Vac From The Sea this environmental horror can be turned into a new resource, helping to provide more recycled plastic that can be used to construct useful household items such as these vacuums. Electrolux plan to remove the plastic in different ways depending on the area they are working on, but methods will include diving for the plastic, scooping it from the waves, and clearing coastlines by hand. Hopefully the plastic reclaimed from the sea that is made into these products would never find its way back there. The dream would be that no other plastics find their way to our seas and that this clean up can highlight the action many need to take to recycle.

The CompoSphere is a composting tumbler system which can be rolled around to aerate the  composting materials within to help it to decompose quicker into compost. Because of this it is a good idea to place something absorbent underneath the sphere to soak this up.

The CompoSphere is also useful due to its ability to be rolled as it can be easily moved to where it is required. Instead of collecting branches, leaves or grass cuttings into a wheelbarrow to take to the compost area, you can move it to them. This way you aerate the materials while simply using the item. The CompoSphere can hold 315lt of material, and has grips and tread to help it to be easily maneuvered around even when full. It measures 76 cm x 61 cm x 43 cm (29.9in x 24 in x 16.9 in). The CompoSphere is made out of recycled, UV protected plastic, which adds to its eco-friendly credentials.

Sprint and Samsung have launched a new eco-friendly mobile phone that’s made from eco-friendly bio-plastic materials, of which 80% are recyclable. The Reclaim is a full-featured mobile phone costing less than $50 with a two year contract. The bio-plastic material makes up 40% of the Reclaim’s casing, and is made from corn.

The phone features GPS-enabled directions, a 2 mega pixel camera with 3x digital zoom, expandable storage up to 32GB using an SD card, integrated web browser and a slide out QWERTY keyboard. The phones are available in two colours, namely Earth Green and Ocean Blue.

The packaging is made from recyclable materials with soy-based inks for the printing to save on harsh chemicals. The manual is available online to save paper and CDs and the charger is an Energy Star approved energy efficient design. Sprint is also offering eco-friendly accessories, including the SOLIO Mono solar-powered charger and two new cell phone carrying cases made from 100 percent recycled plastic water bottles.

Fuji have released a new battery product called the Fuji EnviroMax Eco-Respectful Batteries. The batteries have been designed to be equivalent or better in performance compared to conventional batteries, but being 100% eco-friendly. The batteries contain no harmful mercury or cadmium compounds, nor are they packaged in harmful and non-recyclable PVC. Essentially, if they were disposed of in normal waste systems, they wouldn’t harm the environment.

It’s about time that someone re-designed batteries to be more eco-friendly. Fuji are making a big deal of the fact that their manufacturing process does not release any ozone depleting compounds and they operate under strict standards of environmental responsibility.
