Seagate Barracuda Low-Power Hard Drives

Seagate have just launched a new range of Low Power Barracuda hard drives, in capacities of 2TB, 1.5TB and 1TB. The new hard drives report a 44% reduction in power consumption, as well as a very low noise level. The drives have been targeted at the desktop markets, such as external USB drives, external eSATA drives and low power PCS. The drives are also perfectly suited to the NAS (Network Attached Storage) markets too.

Since the drives are lower power, they typically run much cooler too. The lower operating temperature has the knock-on effect of a longer drive life and improved data access reliability. Seagate are also proud to be following their own green standards, such as being RoHS compliant, at least 70% recyclable materials in the hard drive when it reaches the end of its life, and built using eco-friendly processes.

Expect to see these drives hitting the PC shops pretty soon. They’ll be a touch more expensive compared to their energy-guzzling counter-parts, but they’ll pay for the extra premium within 6 to 12 months.

Recycled Plastic Motorola MOTO W233 Renew

With how pervasive mobile phones are, it’s about time there was a phone that was completely green. The Motorola MOTO W233 Renew is a phone made from recycled plastic, made from 100% recyclable materials, comes with eco-friendly packaging, RoHS compliant, and comes with a postage-paid envelope so that you can send your old phone back for recycling.

The phone is a solid performer, despite not being as flashy as other mobile phones. The W233 is made from recycled watercooler jugs, and has been designed to be completely recyclable. The phone features Dual Band GSM 850/1900 capability, MP3 player, 9 hours talk time, 65K colours, up to 2 GB removable memory and measures 1.77″ x 4.37″ x 0.58″ in size.

Currently the phone is targeted at the US cellphone market on the T-Mobile network. I look forward to seeing it in the UK and Europe!

AltusLumen PAD-L Led Light

AltusLumen have released a new portable PAD-L LED torch gadget, which is the brother to their TRI-L Contemporary Personal Light. The PAD-L adds a few more features that makes it more usable, including adding weatherproofing, adjustable light output, integral 360 degree hinge and user replaceable 4xAAA batteries.

Compared to the TRI-L, the PAD-L adds an extra 92 hours of battery life (so 100 hours in total), a flashing light mode and is also $50 cheaper at $49 (and even cheaper on Amazon). The PAD-L is made from recycled and recyclable aluminum and polycarbonate. The whole light is 75% at the end of it’s life too. Due to using high quality LEDs and anodized aluminium, there are no toxic heavy metals in the construction.

I like the the replaceable AAA batteries, as it allows you to use existing rechargeable batteries, rather than having yet another device that needs charging. There is a solar panel accessory you can buy that will charge the PAD-L, but you could use any AAA solar battery charger if portability is important. Using recyclable and recycled materials also gets my vote.

The AltusLumen PAD-L is definitely an example of an environmentally concious and practical eco gadget.
