Rollable Solar Charger By PowerFilm With Battery Charger

The Rollable Solar Charger By PowerFilm allows you to charge your electronic devices and batteries anywhere. The solar panel can be rolled up to create a small neat package that can be easily taken to wherever it is required.

The Rollable Solar Charger uses clever technology to create a solar panel that is more than just flexible – it can be fully rolled up. The solar chargers are made from a thin film on plastic solar technology, covered in a fluoropolymer coating that allows the panels to be durable, water resistant and UV tolerant. Because of this the solar panel can be used just about anywhere, for example it can be used on a boat, while out sailing, or outdoors when camping or hiking.

The Rollable Solar Charger can be used to power many different portable electronics. The kit comes with a 12 volt female lighter adapter and cable with O-rings. A charging adapter for the electronic device you wish to charge would need to be plugged into this lighter adapter. This may require you to purchase the adapters to allow you to power your device from a car lighter. The solar charger can therefore be used to charge any electronic device that has a charger than can be plugged into a car lighter. The solar charger is also supplied with a AA/AAA battery charger. This battery charger can be used to charge NiMH or NiCd rechargeable AA/AAA batteries, either two or four at a time at a rate of 400mA.

The Rollable Solar Charger measures 36.8 cm x 106.7 cm (14.5 in. x 42 in) when rolled fully out and in use. When the panels are rolled up the device measures 36.8 cm x 10.1cm x 9.2 cm (14.5 in. x 4 in. x 3.75 in.). This, along with its weight of 450g (1lb), allows it to be portable enough to be taken with you wherever you require it. The kit is supplied with a 4.5 meter (15 ft) charging cable, to allow flexibility in where you place the panels. This is to help you to be able to place the solar panels in a brightly lit area while taking advantage of the electricity they supply further away.

Solar Powered Battery Charger

With the Solar Powered Battery Charger you can make using rechargeable batteries a step more environmentally friendly. Able to be transported with you the charger allows you to be able to charge up your batteries in places without a standard electricity supply, or simply help you use less mains electric by charging your batteries through solar power.

The Solar Powered Battery Charger is suitable for AA, AAA, C and D type batteries. All these charge times though are subject to the light levels where the charger has been placed. Though this is not a quick charger it does use an eco-friendly energy source and would help top up a rechargeable battery’s charge when out away from mains electricity.

Freeloader Pro – Solar Powered Charger

The Freeloader Pro is a solar powered charger for portable electronic devices. This device is a more advanced model of a previously reviewed charger, the Freeloader. This charger can be used with a wide range of portable electronic devices including digital cameras, SLR and even video camera batteries due to the CamCaddy that is provided with it.

The Freeloader Pro has all the advantages of the Freeloader and more. A wider range of digital, SLR and video cameras are quickly charged by simply placing their battery into the CamCaddy and plugging that into the Freeloader Pro. When the Freeloader Pro is fully charged it can provide a full charge for most digital cameras and 80%-90% of charge for SLR and video cameras.

Of course cameras are only a small area of devices it charges, most portable electronics are catered for, mobile phones, iPhones, MP3/MP4 players, iPods, GPS devices, PDAs, hand-held gaming devices and even e-book readers. The Freeloader Pro can achieve full charge in around 8 hours using solar panels to charge its 1600mAh Li-ion battery. The device can be folded down into a compact size for transport, the solar panels can be opened out to take advantage of the sunlight when needed. Folded away the Freeloader Pro measures 15cm x 6.3cm x 2cm (5.9in. x 2.5in. x 0.8in.), fully opened out it measures 23.8cm x 6.3cm x 2cm (9.4in. x 2.5in. x 0.8in.).

The Freeloader Pro has a metallic button that when pressed causes it to light up a ‘power halo’ that indicates how much charge the device has, allowing you to be fully aware of how much charging it still needs or how much power it has left to boost your devices. Alongside charging from solar power, the device is also capable of charging itself through the USB ports of a computer or laptop. When charging through a USB port the device takes only 3 hours to fully charge.

The Freeloader Pro allows you to charge your portable electronics on the go, giving a ready source of power from an eco-friendly source. The improvements of the Pro version truly extend the products effectiveness at providing electricity for all portable electronics anywhere (for example the Freeloader could provide an iPod 18 hours of charge when fully charged, the Freeloader Pro can provide it with 28), and make the charger both more powerful and more user friendly.

The V2 is a portable universal solar powered charger that allows you to charge a range of portable electronic devices on the go. By simply leaving the device in direct sunlight you gain a back up power supply to your portable electronic devices.

Solar Powered Hearing Aid

The Solar Ear is an innovative design for a hearing aid that is both low in cost and eco friendly. By using solar power technology and cost effective manufacturing it aims to bring sound to the millions globally who are deaf.

Howard Weinstein created this solar powered hearing aid, named Solar Ear, specifically for those in rural areas world wide where electrical power and money are scarce. This project has been nominated as a Tech Award Laureate. The solar powered digital hearing aid has been created to help the millions of people globally that are deaf, giving them sound and aiding them to get jobs. It is estimated that there are around 600 million people that are deaf globally, but only 8 million of these have hearing aids. The reasons for this are that hearing aids are very expensive and often the people have no access to electricity or batteries to charge them.

The Solar Ear unit is a palm sized device that charges two AA rechargeable Ni-Mh (1600mAh) batteries through its solar panel. In direct sunlight the unit should take between 6 -8 hours to fully charge these batteries, which should retain the charge for about a week and also power the hearing aid/hearing aid batteries for about this time too. The AA rechargeable batteries then power the hearing aids batteries by the hearing aid or its batteries being placed into the unit for charging. This way the unit can charge on a windowsill during the day, gaining full charge, then the hearing aid itself charged over night while it is not in use. The batteries are thought to have a lifespan of around 2-3 years/300 charges, this compares well to traditional hearing aid batteries that are replaced weekly.

The manufacture of the product also helps those that are deaf as the company employs deaf people to construct the devices. The cost of the device is kept low (retails for about $100, with a replacement battery costing about $1) and there is no patent on the device, which should allow for others to create it cheaply as well. Currently the Solar Ear can be found in Brazil, Botswana, and Palestine’s West Bank, the company hopes though to expand into Mexico, China, India and Canada in 2010.

reNEW Solar Battery Charger Pod

The reNEW Solar Battery Charger Pod is a funky variation of the tried and tested solar battery charger that looks a little like a photo frame. The charger itself is placed near a window or stuck to it directly using a suction cup. You place uncharged batteries in the top of the charger, and fully charged batteries come out of the bottom!

Inside the main body of the charger, the batteries are automatically sorted according to their charge, where the batteries needing more charging staying higher up until they reach full capacity. No specifications on charging times, however, I’d imagine it’d be around 8 to 12 hours charging time per battery.

Sure, this is a concept design, but I expect this one will go into production. I look forward to seeing it in the shops!

Solar-Powered Bubble Tower

The Solar Powered Bubble Tower is an innovative outdoor gadget for hire that generates thousands of bubbles using solar panels. The bubble tower is charged using sunlight, and therefore requires no generator or electricity cables running to it. The bubble tower can be set to generate lots of individual bubbles or release clusters of bubbles that look like clouds.

Being so high in the air, the tower gets great sunlight, but also allows the wind to catch the bubbles. The bubble tower is ideal for any outdoor party, either for adults or children! The tower is hired out by a company in Colorado, who do all of the set up for you. The bubble tower can also be used at night, where the designers recommend using the tower with strobe lights.

A great concept that will encourage people to enjoy the great outdoors. Hopefully the bubble mixture is eco-friendly too!

Konarka Roll-up Solar Chargers

Konarka Technologies have announced their Roll-up Solar Charger that uses ultra-thin solar panels to harness the sun’s energy. Although the product is still in development, there will be two variations of the charger. The first version will be a direct charger that charges up devices like mobile phones and MP3 players. The second version will contain an internal battery which is charged up via the rolled up solar panel. Then battery is then used to charge devices.

Although there are plenty of solar chargers on the market, this green gadget will be a lot more practical by having a significantly larger surface area compared to other solar chargers. No cost information has been released yet, but as long as it’s priced less than $70, it will probably sell really well.
