The Mooncharge Solar Battery Case is a great device for protecting your iPhone 4 while providing you with an eco-friendly back up power supply. The case has an inbuilt solar panel that charges its internal battery, this power can then be used by your iPhone when it is required, just remember to leave the protective case in the sun to charge!

The Mooncharge Solar Battery Case is great for those that rely on a working iPhone even when there is no access to mains electricity. The case has been designed to perfectly fit an iPhone 4, however it can be used to charge similar devices such as an iPod, though the fit will not be as good. The device is a sturdy case than can help protect your iPhone from any knocks and bumps, moreover due to its inbuilt solar panel and internal rechargeable 2400mAh battery it can be used to provide you with an extra boost of power whenever you require one.

The Mooncharge Solar Battery Case is able to provide you with up to 315 hours of standby time, or 5 hours of extra talk time when it has been fully charged. This could also provide you with 27 hours for audio output such as music, or 10 hours of video. To charge the case you can either place it in a bright spot with the solar panel facing the sunlight to allow it to charge in an eco-friendly manner, or you can charge it through USB. The device has 4 blue LEDs that indicate that your phone is running out of power, it can also allow you to connect your iPhone to a computer without removing it from the case.

The Mooncharge Solar Battery Case has been designed to be tough and durable while having a soft touch feel with non-slip finish. It is a great way to keep a back up energy supply for your iPhone, while allowing you to be able to charge up anywhere there is sunlight. Just 20 minutes of sunlight can provide you with up to 50 minutes of standby time, or 5 more minutes of talk time. Though some forethought it required, the case is great for those who require their phone to be charged at all times, even if they are outdoors hiking, camping, spending time on the beach, or just away from mains electricity traveling.

Colourful iPhone 4G Silicone Cases with Solar Panel

These iPhone 4G Silicone Cases are very brightly coloured iPhone cases which also feature a solar panel charger on the back of the case. The case clips on to the iPhone and the internal 1500mAh battery charges up when charges it up when placed in sunlight. The charged battery can then be used to top up the iPhone.

As the battery in the case is charging up, the 3 light indicators on the bottom of the case will light up. Each of the LED lights represent 25% capacity, 50% capacity and 100% capacity respectively. You can charge up the iPhone by flicking the ON/OFF switch to ON once the battery is full. As usual, you can also topup the battery in the charger using a USB lead to your PC, an AC adaptor, or to a car charger.

Since the battery is in the case, it means you don’t necessarily need to keep your iPhone with the case as it’s charging up. Probably a good thing considering that iPhones are pretty expensive to just leave lying around!

What’s not clear is if you can still connect to the iPhone using the standard 30-pin Apple connector once you’ve got your iPhone in the case. It would be nice if you had a pass-through connector on it, as the case is nice enough that you wouldn’t want to take it out of the case very often!

Emergency Solar Charger for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch

Emergency Solar Charger - Charging iPhone

As the name suggests, the Emergency Solar Charger for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch is a compact little solar-powered battery and charger, which can be used to charge up your iPod Touch or iPhone in an emergency. The charger contains a battery which is charged up via the solar panel. When you need the extra power, you just connect the charger to the iPhone. The charger will automatically charge the iPhone, giving it roughly 20% of charge.

How It Works

You can charge up the charger using solar energy (so leaving it out on a sunny dashboard or windowsill) or you can charge it up via USB using the Apple USB cable (which could be via the PC, mains adapter, or via a car adapter). For the purposes of testing, I typically used the USB cable, as the charger was charged within just 2 hours. It takes a couple of days to charge the charger in sunlight, so really, you want to place the charger in strong sunlight when you’re not using it. That ensures you always have the emergency charge when you need it.

Once the charger is charged up, you just connect it to an iPhone or iPod Charger and it starts charging straight away. It takes about 20 minutes to charge up the iPhone or iPod to about 20%. If your device is completely dead when you start charging, then the charger charges the device up to around 16 to 18% (due to the power consumption when first switching on the iPod Touch or iPhone).

Feature Suggestions

The charger is very simple, it does exactly what it says on the tin. However, there are a couple of things that I suggest as minor improvements. Firstly, sometimes you need to wiggle the plug on the charger to get it to be recognised by the iPhone or iPod. I suspect there’s a microscopic difference in the connectors which means the charger is not always recognised as a charging device.

Secondly, it’d be good if there was an indicator to show how fully charged the charger is. Just a few small LEDs or a small LCD display to show if the charger is empty, half-full or fully charged. Currently, there’s no way to know how charged the charger is. Some attention here would be appreciated.

Conclusion

The Emergency Solar Charger for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch is a genuinely useful little gadget. I can imagine that it’s going to come in very useful when out and about with no power source! And costing just $5.51, it’s not going to break the bank either! Thanks to Budget Gadgets for sending me the charger to review.

Solar Powered Case For Mobile Electronics

This Solar Powered Case is designed to charge many electrical devices from solar power. It can charge most small portable electronics, for example mobile phones, compact digital cameras, and MP3/4 players.

The Solar Powered Case is large enough to hold most mobile electronics within it, to help protect them and charge them at once, and allowing it to be easily taken anywhere. The small blue bag measures 13.6 cm x 9.3 cm x 3.5 cm (5.4 in x 3.7 in x 1.4 in) externally and has an internal holding space of 11 cm x 6.8 cm x 3.2 cm (4.3 in x 2.7 in x 1.3 in).

The solar panel connects to a 2500mAh lithium battery within which it stores the electrical energy. The device though can be connected to mains power to charge the battery as well in times when the sunlight is not strong enough.

Full charge should provide about 100 minutes of talk time on a phone. The case comes with an USB cable, a connector to connect it to mains power, and 10 different adapters for mobile phones. The case does provide a safe environment for different electronics due to its padding while also being a store of back up power. When out camping this protection can be needed, as is the extended battery time for devices such as cameras and mobile phones. By having a solar panel this charge can then be renewed easily whenever there is decent daylight.

Powcell Solar-Powered iPhone Charger Sleeve

Solar charger gadgets are not exactly breaking news these days, but the Powcell solar charger is a little different in that its a bespoke case for an iPhone. The Powcell charger includes an internal battery which is charged via the solar panel, which is then used to charge the iPhone battery.

The case itself is a touch on the bulky side, but given how much battery power iPhones use, some free eco-friendly energy is no bad thing. Amusingly the designers call the product “unique”, but there are lots of iPod and iPhone solar chargers, so I remain sceptical. No pricing or technical specifications were available at the time of writing either.

Gobe Solar-Panel Suitcase and Powerpack

We have so many electronic gadgets these days, but truly portable solar charger system are not particularly common yet. However, the GoBe solar charger kit supports a range of devices, and comes with a handy briefcase for the solar panels, and a portable solar pack for the battery and charger electronics. The solar panel is rated at 10.5 Watts, and the power pack is fitted with DC, AC and USB power outlets.

The GoBe PowerHub can give you 3-6 hours of extra life from your laptop battery, which is impressive as most other solar chargers cannot handle the power demands of a laptop. The powerpack can also run a portable DVD player for 7-14 hrs, a 60 Watt fluorescent bulb for about 10 hours, as well as charging all of your iPods, mobile phones, and other portable gadgets.

The solar panel suitcase can fully charge the powerpack in 10 hours, or you can use mains power to charge the powerpack in just 1 hour. The powerpack weighs around 4.3kg, and the suitcase weights around 6kg. The GoBe Power Hub will last around 500-1000 charges.

Samsung Blue Earth Eco-Phone

Samsung have announced an eco-friendly mobile phone that has been made from a recycled plastic called PCM, which is recycled from plastic water bottles. The handset and phone charger are completely free of toxic nasties, such as Brominated Flame Retardants, Beryllium and Phthalate. The phone is fitted with a solar panel on the back of the phone, which is designed to ensure you always have enough power to make a phone call.

The phone itself has a large touchscreen interface. The bluetooth settings, screen brightness and screen backlight settings can all be changed to conserve energy using an “eco-mode”. Details of the specifications are due to be released prior to being available in the second half of 2009.
