Book Light - Standing Up

The Solar-Powered Book Light gadget was sent to me to review by Useful Things who specialise in practical and inexpensive gadgets for the home, office and for traveling. Essentially the gadget is a compact LED light for reading your book at night, which charges up during the day via its solar panel.

The book light does feature a robust clip on the rear to allow it to be clipped to a page on a book. However, from using the gadget, it was hard to get the perfect angle with the bendable light when it was clipped on to the book. I found that it was much better when the light was free-standing on a nearby surface. What was surprising was how bright the light was, it really was bright enough to light up the entire page.

I’ve not managed to run down the battery yet, and that’s using the light for an hour each night, and leaving the light in a bright place (but not direct sunlight). So the solar panel is clearly effective and perfectly suited for its application. The LED light is switched on my clicking the little button in the corner. The switch makes a good solid click when you press it, so you know you’ve switched it on properly.

The only small limitation with the solar-powered book light is that the bendable part of the light doesn’t stay in position as well as you might hope. It behaves a little more like plastic than it does metal, as in it bends itself back a little bit. Apart from that, it’s a very practical little light, and surprisingly effective given how little it costs. I definitely recommend the solar book light!

This portable radio by Re-Wind can be charged through both winding the handle, by solar power or through its USB cable to ensure you can always charge its battery. The radio also includes a bright LED light, and an alarm clock built into the system, it can additionally be used to charge certain other portable electronics through a charging cable.

By either winding the handle on the device or by placing the radio in sunlight you can charge the devices internal battery to provide you with electricity to run it.  The handle is located at the back of the device and is easily turned and the solar panel is located on the top of the device to help take advantage of any light about. You can easily see when the device is charging as it has a charging light indicator which turns red when it is receiving charge. The device additionally has a built in LED torch, which has 3 LEDs to provide a bright directional beam of light when you require it without using much electricity.  Once the device is fully charged it can provide you with 9 hours of radio and clock use, or 6 hours of use as a torch. The radio measures 7.5cm x 50 cm x 5.5 cm (3 in x 19.7 in x 2.2 in) allowing it to be portable enough to travel with you wherever you need to go without the bulk of packing a radio, alarm and torch at once.

The Solar LED Torch And Worklight has been designed by Proteam for use outdoors or in any outside building such as a shed or garage. The system is designed so the unit is left where needed to provide light, from either a fixed point or as a portable torch, while the solar panel is mounted on a wall or roof to take advantage of the maximum amount of sunlight/daylight.

The Solar LED Torch And Worklight comprises a compact amorphous solar cell measuring 11cm x 2.5cm x 15cm (4.3in x 1in x 5.9in) that is designed to be wall mounted (though may be placed onto a low area of roof of a shed), and a light/torch which comes with a charging bracket which is 6cm x 23.5cm (2.4in x 9.3in). The light has been designed to be used either in its charging bracket as a fixed light, or to be removed and used as a torch. To aid this the light has 10 LEDs positioned to provide a fixed light and a further 3 positioned for use as a conventional torch light.

The solar panel charges the 3  600mAh AAA  Ni-MH rechargeable batteries within the light when the light is in the charging bracket. If the light is being used as a torch you will need to remember to place it back into the charging bracket to guarantee the torch will provide you with light. When fully charged the light should provide you with 5 hours of lighting either from the fixed light or from the torch light.

The Solar LED Torch And Worklight also comes with 3 metres of cable to allow you to place the solar panel in an ideal spot for providing sufficient sunlight/daylight for charging while placing the charging bracket and light in a position required for ease of use. The light has a dim LED to illuminate the on/off switch to aid using the device in dark locations.

The Solar Powered LED Torch by Brando provides a way of powering a torch with solar energy without the solar panel being part of the torch. With the solar panels on the docking station the torch is a more conventional torch shape and its LED light produces a steady bright beam.

The Solar Powered Torch uses a single LED (Light Emitting Diode), this 0.5w light emits a bright beam while having a low energy consumption rate.  The torch comes with three 400 mAh AAA rechargeable batteries. The torch measures 13cm x 3.5cm x 3.5cm (5in x 1.4in x 1.4in) making it a compact torch good for inaccessible places and light for carrying. The docking station for the torch however is a little more bulky, the solar panel on it measures 4cm x 13.5cm (1.6in x 5.3in) meaning it makes the most of any light about.

The Solar Powered Torch’s docking station does need to be positioned somewhere in direct sunlight to charge the torch and the torch needs to be placed within the station. This does mean some forethought is needed to make sure you have a charged torch when you need it, but this should be simply done by always keeping the torch in the docking station when not in use. The docking station and torch are both portable but the docking station is a little inconvenient for transporting around much due to its bulk.

The Stingray Solar-Powered Pocket Torch is a compact, light and powerful LED torch. The double LED lights provide a bright output for this little torch. With a keychain built into the design the torch is easily attached to a keyring or bag to be with you when you need it.

The Solar-Powered Pocket Torch will provide 1 hour of lighting from being left to charge for 5 hours under direct sunlight. When it is fully charged it will produce 2 and a half hours of lighting. The LED lights should provide you with 50,000 hours of lighting life. The torch is certainly pocket sized measuring 6.6cm. x 3.8cm. x 1.4cm. (2.6in. x 1.5in. x 0.6in.) and with it weighing only 78g it adds little weight to a bag or key chain.

One issue with this torch would be its solar nature, unlike wind-up torches that you can power quickly before you need them this torch does require some forethought in placing it in direct sunlight to charge. Though once charged its rechargeable battery does seem to give a decent length of lighting time, compared to the often quickly fading wind up torches.
