This EcoCradle Mushroom Packaging is a great way to package items safely without the need for the chemically made packaging materials. The packaging naturally breaks down in even a garden compost heap, and is created from mycelium growing around agricultural by-products, and so can be grown into any shape desired.

The EcoCradle Mushroom Packaging has been created by Ecovative designs, and it has recently been announced that DELL are trialing the packaging for transporting their servers, which can weigh over 100lbs. The packaging is grown into whatever shape is required quickly. They use agricultural by-products such as buckwheat husks, oat hulls, or cotton burrs to make up the core of the packaging.  It takes only 5 – 7 days, in the dark with no watering and no petrochemical inputs, for the mycelium (fungal network of threadlike cells) to totally bind this core together into strong eco-friendly packaging. The packaging is treated with heat to ensure there will be no more growth or spores.

EcoCradle Mushroom Packaging is totally biodegradable and renewable, making use of inedible crop waste. Unlike many other bio packaging materials it does not use food or fuel crops in its creation and so does not divert resources away from where they are needed. It is a great way to safely package devices, knowing that no matter how the packaging is disposed of it will quickly rot down without any harm to the environment.

Cardborigami is a quick and easy way to construct temporary housing to shelter those who have been left homeless, especially after a calamity of some sort. The sustainable cardboard structure is small enough to be easily portable, is waterproof and flame resistant, and can be constructed at anytime anywhere.

Cardborigami has been designed by Tine Hovsepian during her 4th year of studies in Architecture. The device uses standard corrugated cardboard to form its structure due to it being a sustainable resource that is lightweight and has a natural ability to insulate. The cardboard is specially treated to allow it to be waterproof and flame resistant, this allows it to be of use to both urban homeless and to those in immediate need of shelter due to a disaster of some form.

The cardboard is scored to allow it to be formed into the shelter. The pattern of the scoring has been designed to allow the shelter to fold into a small package that can be carried easily by a single person but can be unfolded to create a stable shelter large enough to provide suitable temporary housing.  The name Cardborigami reveals the inspiration that is behind the design of the shelter. The Japanese art of paper folding, origami, is reflected in the ability to fold the device up into a small package that can be transported with ease and be able to unfold it into a large protective shelter.

This simple cardboard structure can make a large difference to many lives, from those living rough on the streets to those suffering from a calamity. The device provides shelters that can be transported into areas quickly and effectively helping to save fuel costs and allowing it to reach those in need rapidly. Created from a sustainable material Cardborigami helps humanity while aiming to cause as little environmental impact as possible.

The ChairKit is a piece of sustainably sourced birch plywood that has been marked up and cut to allow you to construct a chair simply from it. The chair has been designed to make the most of a single piece of wood, to ensure there is as little wastage as possible.

The main concept behind the ChairKit is a simple one – to maximize material effectiveness. With the chair being formed from sustainably sourced birch plywood, the environmental impact is lessened. This effect is amplified when as much wood as possible is used from one small piece, to avoid any waste.

Because the chair comes as one piece of wood the impact on the environment from transporting the items is lessened. Each chair requires very little room and can be stacked easily, this maximizes the amount that can be transported in vehicles. Each chair requires some construction, cutting out the pieces (though a lot of the cutting has been done) smoothing down the cuts, and then assembling the chair. The hope is that through involvement constructing the chair a person will feel more of a connection to it, more likely to hold onto the chair and so less likely to dispose of it quickly. This then leads to the hope that the chair will be put to good use over many years, unlike some chairs which are disposed of quickly and so go to waste. The ChairKit allows a person to be more involved with the creation of a chair, knowing it is made causing as little waste as possible. The chair hopes to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible while looking good.

Tony’s Farm Eco-Packaging is a step towards a more eco-friendly packaging for the leading organic farm in China. The farm wished to use a packaging that was more in fitting with its environmentally aware philosophy. This pulp molded box allows the produce to be safely transported while being reusable, stack-able and sustainable.

Tony’s Farm Eco-Packaging has been envisioned by designer Matthias Burhenne to allow Tony’s Farm in China to be able to transport their organic fruit and vegetables safely to their customers. The molded pulp packaging created from sustainable sources is moisture resistant, helping it to safely hold the produce, it is suitable for reuse and once it has come to the end of its usefulness the packaging can be easily recycled, or composted. Tony’s Farm Eco-Packaging has been designed to allow it to be stack-able, so that the amount of space the empty packaging takes is kept to a minimum.

The boxes are designed to be used to take the produce to the customers, and to be returned for reuse. The packaging boxes though could be useful in a variety of ways in a home. These boxes could make a suitable alternative to plastic bags or plastic boxes often used to transport produce. Though many supermarkets do allow you to reuse cardboard boxes when in store those using online delivery find their produce transported in many plastic bags, carried in plastic carriers. Many stores will collect the plastic bags for recycling, though reducing the amount of plastic used would still be of significant benefit to the environment. It is not known however why the produce pictured has been securely encased in differing plastic wrappers, the boxes would allow you to place in fruit and vegetables unwrapped.
