The PropelAir uses just 1.5 litres of water to flush the bowl, compared to up to 9.5 litres of water used in conventional toilet cisterns! The toilet was designed by Phoenix Product Development. It works when the lid of the toilet is closed over the bowl, which creates an air-tight seal. A small amount of water is used to rinse the bowl, then air is used to displace the waste.

The flush works in just 3 seconds. The bowl is then filled with more water to act as an odour trap. It’s pretty similar to an airline toilet in the way it works. There’s no rim on the toilet bowl, meaning it’s more hygienic and easier to clean. Impressively, the PropelAir toilet doesn’t used compressed air to flush the toilet, it uses air at atmospheric pressure.

The toilet is not yet available to purchase, but you can register your interest on the designers website.

The “Shit Box” is a wonderful trademark name, despite not being a product you’d chat about with your parents or other prudish family members. You’d need to be a fairly liberal individual to want to use the Shit Box, which is an eco-friendly portable toilet. All components are biodegradable, yet the toilet box itself is re-usable. Inside the toilet are special bags that will happily breakdown if left to compost.

The seat can hold an impressive 20 stone in weight and is designed to be packed up and carried around. I do wonder if the seat would smell after a while, especially if certain users were to “miss” when they use it. The price is also uncomfortably high. I’d expect a more reasonable price to be around the £10 mark. Nice bit of creative thinking though!

Washup is a bizarre conceptual design that combines a washing machine and a toilet in the same place. The idea is that waste water from the washing machine is used to flush the toilet, rather than wasting fresh water to flush the toilet.

The inventor claims that for small homes, the washing machine in the bathroom would save space. By having the washing machine at arm height, it saves having to bend down to collect the washing, therefore helping those with poor mobility.

The idea of using “used” water, otherwise known as greywater, is not new. It would make more sense to collect all of the water from the bath, shower, washing machine and washbasins in a single tank and use that for toilets and watering the garden.

Definitely a novel green gadget, and certainly thinking outside the box!
