The IllumiCharger – Light-Powered USB Wall Outlet Concept

The IllumiCharger is a concept that aims to allow everyone the freedom of charging their portable electronic devices from home from eco-friendly electricity. The charger is meant to charge through the day from the ambient light in a room. This electricity is then used to provide a decent nights charge through a USB port to a wide range of devices.

The IllumiCharger concept aims to help people use eco-friendly electricity at home for their portable electronic devices. The charger is designed to be placed onto a wall, much like a traditional power socket. The ambient illumination of the room, be it from daylight or artificial light sources (fluorescent, compact fluorescent, halogen, or incandescent lighting), is used by the solar panel to charge the internal battery. This battery then charges your devices through either of the two USB ports.

The aim of this concept device is to provide a charger that can charge slowly through the day to provide a charge over night, or when required. There is some skepticism to whether the ambient light in a room would provide enough power for devices, however the charger could be positioned near a window to gain a higher amount of sunlight charging, or even used as a portable solar charger left out in a sunny spot if there was a problem. The charger is intended to be constructed from materials that are as environmentally friendly as possible. Recycled plastic and cornstarch based plastic alternatives are meant to be used to form the charger itself and recycled cardboard and cornstarch based plastic alternatives are to be used to form the packaging.

The IllumiCharger hopes to provide charge to any device that can be charged through a USB cable. The charger should be able to provide devices with eco-friendly electricity from a 9600 mAh battery at a rate of around 500 mAh. The charger could mean an end to people charging from their laptops, computers or even from mains supplied wall chargers when at home. The IllumiCharger would store electricity continually without any need to plan for when it would be required fully charged ready for use.

Freeloader Pro – Solar Powered Charger

The Freeloader Pro is a solar powered charger for portable electronic devices. This device is a more advanced model of a previously reviewed charger, the Freeloader. This charger can be used with a wide range of portable electronic devices including digital cameras, SLR and even video camera batteries due to the CamCaddy that is provided with it.

The Freeloader Pro has all the advantages of the Freeloader and more. A wider range of digital, SLR and video cameras are quickly charged by simply placing their battery into the CamCaddy and plugging that into the Freeloader Pro. When the Freeloader Pro is fully charged it can provide a full charge for most digital cameras and 80%-90% of charge for SLR and video cameras.

Of course cameras are only a small area of devices it charges, most portable electronics are catered for, mobile phones, iPhones, MP3/MP4 players, iPods, GPS devices, PDAs, hand-held gaming devices and even e-book readers. The Freeloader Pro can achieve full charge in around 8 hours using solar panels to charge its 1600mAh Li-ion battery. The improvements of the Pro version truly extend the products effectiveness at providing electricity for all portable electronics anywhere (for example the Freeloader could provide an iPod 18 hours of charge when fully charged, the Freeloader Pro can provide it with 28), and make the charger both more powerful and more user friendly.

The Solio Mag is a solar powered hybrid charger by Solio. Designed to maximize efficiency by being both an incredibly powerful charger and a highly versatile one, the Mag is a modern looking charger for use on portable electronics anywhere.

The Solio Mag is made from a magnesium alloy casting which helps make it very durable, helping to protect it from heat and impact. USBCELL – USB Rechargeable Batteries

The USBCELL is a rechargeable AA battery by Moixa. The battery is designed to fit into a USB port and to charge through it. These batteries offer a freedom from the need to have a battery charger to be able to recharge a battery.

The USBCELL is a Ni-MH (Nickel-metal Hydride) battery. Due to this they can be charged up even when the battery has not been fully discharged, without affecting the lifetime of the battery. The USBCELL battery is a 1.2v 1300mAh AA battery. When charging these batteries in a USB port they should take around 5 hours to reach 90% fully charged, of course this may be achieved in less time if the battery was not fully discharged first.

These rechargeable batteries offer more freedom than average rechargeable batteries which require a battery charger, as these can be charged through USB ports. USB ports can be found on most laptops and computers. The USBCELL battery can then be charged while you are out and about from your laptops power.

The USBCELL batteries can also be charged through a Ni-MH battery charger. To charge them through a USB port you just flip down the lid covering the USB plug which is located at the positive end of the battery. When the USBCELL is plugged in a small green light will turn on near the USB plug part of the battery to show that the battery is charging.

The USBCELL batteries cost around £10 for a pair in the UK, or around $18 in the US.

The Sun Drive – ZYRUS’ Compact USB Solar Charger

ZYRUS has unveiled its new compact solar charger, named the Sun Drive. The Sun Drive offers up to 90 to 100 minutes of talking time and 25 to 35 hours of standby time for most mobile phones. The Sun Drive can also charge the usual gadgets such as MP3 players and digital cameras.

There are 2 options available. The first option is the solar charger with a built-in 4GB USB storage disk for 39,800 KRW (31 USD), or just the charger feature alone for 29,000 KRW (23 USD). No further technical details were available at the time of writing.

Free Solar Energy Station for Busy Cities

The Free Solar Energy Station is a concept that is made for open public and commercial spaces, such as city centres. The solar station would allow anyone to charge up their mobile phones, MP3 players and other gadgets for free using the USB sockets on the station. The station is made from solar panels, recycled batteries, sustainable bamboo and recycled metals.

The solar panels have been designed with hinges so that they can be moved into the optimal position to get a high exposure to sunlight. The solar station has been also designed with reuse in mind, as well as being eye catching. The solar station promotes alternative energies, using the temptation of free energy to grab people’s attention.

Solar Ski Jacket – Eco-Friendly, Stylish and Pricey

Of all the places to have a solar panel, a jacket is not exactly my first choice. The solar ski jacket features a neoprene collar with solar panels stitched into them. The solar panels can then be used to charge mobile phones, ipods, and any other usb-connected devices.

The jacket has re-inforced shoulder panels ideal for carrying ski equipment, fully taped seams to water-proof the jacket, detachable hood, and a few other fancy features. The solar panels are capable of charging devices needing a 5-6V input voltage.

And here’s the best bit, it costs $1,350. Hmmm, completely negating the benefit of the green gadget angle! I think it’s a premium clothing line so that you look like you’re eco-friendly. If you’re looking for cheap clothes, then forget this jacket.
