The Clean Energy Water Clock is a beautiful digital clock that uses water as a power source. There is never a worry over batteries running out with the clock, there is only a need to ensure there is enough water! It can even run from moist soil which allows you to grow small plants in the clock.

The Clean Energy Water Clock uses water to create electrical energy. Water Powered Digital Alarm Clock

This Water Powered Digital Alarm Clock allows you to keep track of time without needing to keep track of batteries. Powered by water, the alarm clock only requires additional water roughly ever month to keep it working.

The Water Powered Digital Alarm Clock uses water to create electrical energy. It achieves this through an electrochemical reaction between the water and the devices electrodes. The electrical energy generated is used to power the digital clock display, allowing you to clearly see the time from a glance. The clock features date settings, time settings, hour notification through a beep and an alarm setting.

It should be noted that both the hourly alert beep and the alarm beep are not powerful sounds, they are notifications that it has reached the hour or time of alarm. Some may find the alarm insufficient to awaken them if used as a morning wake up alarm, though it can still be used as an alarm throughout the day for other purposes, such as cooking. By using water as a power source the clock is freed from the need for a constant supply of batteries. New Bridge-Based Tidal Power Generator Technology

Every so often, there’s some new and exciting green technology that catches my eye, and the new Bluenergy Tidal Bridge system is an example of that. Bluenergy have created a system that generates energy from tidal water from a bridge rather than a reservoir. By using a bridge rather than a reservoir, environmental impact is minimised in addition to creating a transport infrastructure and still permitting the use of shipping lanes.

In the video below, Bluenergy present the Tidal Bridge as a better alternative compared to a conventional bridge for a location in China where a bridge is being considered. The bridge would allow for a motorway and a train network which would considerably reduce travel times, and therefore vehicle emissions. However, a tidal bridge would also produce a substantial amount of energy in addition to all the benefits that a conventional bridge would bring.

The tidal bridge design features vertical turbines that generate the energy. The turbines have been designed so that small fish and plankton can just flow straight through the turbines. For larger marine life, the sonic-based sensors on the turbines will stop the turbines if a larger animal gets too close. This is a fascinating idea, and I’d be very interested to find out more about how it works.

In terms of maintenance, the electrical systems for the bridge are near the surface. Therefore any fixes and repairs can be done using the crane system, making it easier and therefore less expensive to fix any problems. This reduces the need for specialist under-water maintenance too, which could be expensive and disruptive.

What’s really refreshing about this design is that it’s a distillation of common sense ideas and practical technology. I look forward to seeing some Tidal Bridges around the world over the next few years!

The Leeds 1025-77BK Elements is a eco friendly water powered clock. The clock has a large, clear LCD screen for its display that is powered by water you place into the clock.

The Leeds 1025-77BK Elements turns water into electrical energy which it uses to power itself and its LCD display. The LCD screen measures 4.8 cm x 2.2 cm (1.875 in. x 0.875in.) which helps to ensure the information it displays is clear and easily seen. The clock can display both date and time on its display. As the clock is powered by water it can be placed wherever it is required, though some access to it is needed to allow you refill the clock with fresh water when it is required. After the clock has been filled with fresh water, it should provide enough electricity to operate itself for around a week and a half.

MetalCell – Portable Battery Powered By Saltwater or Urine

The MetalCell is a portable battery ready for use anywhere. The battery allows you to generate energy for electronics like flashlights or even laptops from saltwater. Or, if there is no salt water about, it can use urine.

The MetalCell is said to have been conceived in South Korea for use by the military. The battery works by exploiting the chemical properties of magnesium. The magnesium plates react with the sodium in the salt water (or urine) which creates low voltage current. This electrochemical reaction can then be used to charge up any equipment, particularly equipment where there’s no immediate power source. Electronics are known for running out of power when it’s most inconvenient and when there is no chance to recharge them. For the military, where the problem can be life threatening, this battery is meant to be an emergency back up that can run from materials a soldier has to hand (be that saltwater or urine!).

The MetalCell could be extremely useful for home use in areas where a sudden cut of power is likely. The battery can be stored away safely for years, as the internal workings will not degrade with age. Due to it’s compact size, a number of batteries can be stored away in even small storage cupboards. As soon as you add saltwater or urine to the battery, it’s ready for use. In theory, the battery can run a laptop for around 4 hours. The battery will require refills of saltwater or urine to keep charge going, though eventually the magnesium plates would also require replacement.

H2O Water Powered Can Shaped Clock

The H2O Water Powered Can Clock uses state of the art water technology to power a large hi contrast display (LCD) clock. This clock will run continuously for a long time without needing any human intervention.

By using positive and negative electrodes (in a similar way to the potato clocks of old, yet more attractive) the H2O Water Powered Can Clocks patented technology creates an electrochemical reaction with water, thus producing the electrical energy for powering the LCD clock display. The Can clock is the size and shape of a conventional can of drink, roughly 11cm x 5.8cm (4.3in. x 2.3in.), its coloured transparent body allowing you to see the electrodes within.

The water will need replacing due to evaporation. The evaporation though should be at a slow rate as the water is well encased, meaning it will only require a water top up every 6 to 12 months.

The battery for the H2O Water Powered Can Clock does have a minimum continuous life of 2 years, though by simply allowing the device to fully dry out when no longer required you will elongate its years of usage, as it will be ready to go again as soon as the can shaped clock is once again full of water.

Vena Mini-Hydro System – Portable Turbine Generator

The Vena Mini-Hydro System is a portable generator kit that charges a power-pack from the flow of water. The turbine part of the generator is stuck into the river bed, and the flow of the river drives the turbine. A thick wire then leads back into the power pack to charge it up.

Designed by Daniel Hull, the Vena Mini-Hydro System is designed to be an eco-friendly generator pack for remote power requirements. Of course, you’ll need to be near a river to make use of it.

Interestingly, there seems to be no protection against debris or perhaps any wildlife that might be floating in the river. I’d expect some kind of protective mesh over the blade to protect both wildlife and the turbine.

Sylvania ECOlight – Water Powered Shower Light

SYLVANIA’s ECOlight LED Water Powered Shower Light is a fun eco gadget that will give you light in the shower, powered only by the flow of water through the gadget. Using a tiny water turbine, the flow of water produces enough energy to illuminate you when giving yourself a scrub.

The LED light itself is adjustable, so you can point it in any direction you want. As an additional safety feature, the outside edges of the ECOlight will change to red when the temperature goes above 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 degrees Fahrenheit), or go blue when the temperature goes below 25.5 degrees Celsius (78 degrees Fahrenheit).

Sure it doesn’t serve any particularly practical purpose, but it’s fun, easy to install and doesn’t need any batteries.

Timeless Garden – A Clock that Runs on Mud

We’ve almost seen it all, a water-powered clock, a lemon-powered clock, now we have a mud-powered clock! Designed by Francesco Castiglione Morelli and Tommaso Ceschi, the Timeless Garden uses the chemical reaction between metal and mud to generate enough electricity to power a clock!

You can plant what you like in the clock, and grass has been chosen for this design. Not only do you remove the need for electricity, but the oxygen-generating benefits of a plant also does its bit for the environment. Going one step further, the clock itself is made from recycled plastic.

As far as eco-friendly clocks go, this has got to be the most appealing I’ve ever seen. It would be even more useful to have a larger plant pot, as well as a clock that uses the MSF signal to automatically set itself to the right time.
