A simple and effective way of sterilizing water is to bubble ozone through the water. Ozone (O₃) is a form of Oxygen gas made from 3 Oxygen molecules. Ozone is a pretty strong oxidising agent, producing insoluble oxides from chemicals and minerals in water (which can then be filtered out). When it comes to organisms, ozone will breakdown a significant part of the cellular structure, rendering them harmless. This means Ozone can be used as part of the water purification process.

An ozone generator or (ozonator) generates ozone by passing air through a high-frequency electric field. These gadgets are commonly sold to purify the water in hot tubs and spas. You can often smell Ozone when you’re in underground metro systems, such as the London Underground, as they use high voltage for running the trains.

Petra Wadstrom is a Swedish inventor has developed a solar-powered water purifier that could provide billions of the world’s poorest people with access to clean and disease-free drinking water. The purifier treats 10 litres of water at once, all within a compact case. The cost of the unit is to be set at around just $35, which would make it very affordable for many aid agencies.

The Solvatten uses solar energy to treat the contaminated water with ultra-violet (UV) rays. The UV rays essentially render all bacteria and viruses inert. The purifier does not need any special technical skills and is completely portable. The price, ease of use and portability make it a great device for developing countries who need access to safe drinking water.
