The earth’s surface is mostly covered by water and the human body is made up of mostly water, which shows that there is a link between water, ecosystems, and health. However, there is a shortage of safe drinking water and adequate sanitation, which can result in very serious illnesses. Besides water-borne illnesses, there are chemicals, such as pesticides and other synthetic chemicals that make their way into the water systems because of runoff. It is more than farmers and other people who put chemicals into the water, such items oil, gasoline, and sewage are dumped into the ground and end up in our water resources. But there are ways that we can protect our natural water systems.

Ecosystem Approach

People can take an ecosystem approach to help saving the water systems across the world.  Anybody can implement the ecosystem approach by taking certain precautions. First, do not over fertilize your lawn or garden or overuse pesticides. Additionally, you can use organic fertilizers or pesticides. Also, take care of your parks and waterways, and plant vegetation by the waterways. Find out what your community is doing to help with the natural water resources, and join up to help them.

Water Resource Management

Water resource management is trying to manage water resources so that they are available, and to adjust water flow so that it can meet the growing needs of urbanization. A way to achieve this is to become more water efficient. One way you can help with this is to check for leaks around your home. You can also watch how much you water your lawn in the summer time, which you can use timed sprinklers to help with this. You can also plant shrubs or use groundcovers instead of grass in hard to water areas on your landscape. Additionally when washing dishes, do not leave the water running while you rinse your dishes. Also turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth, doing this will save 25 gallons of water in a month. It just takes doing these small tips to help with water management.

Protect Water Resources

We need to start protecting our water resources on a both a household and worldwide level to protect our water from contamination. One way to do this is to help protect our wetlands because they are starting to quickly disappear, and wetlands are a very important part of the ecosystem. The wetlands filter drinking water, protect coastlines from natural disasters, and are habitat for wildlife. They are also the habitat for fish and other animals that are a food resource for us.

The ecosystem and water play a very important part in our environment and our health. It is important for us to take care of our ecosystem and our natural water resources. If all our natural water sources become contaminated or extinct, the planet and human life will cease to exist. It is worth our time to do what we can to protect and conserve our natural water sources.

The King Of Urinal is a concept design for a urinal that helps to save on water consumption and promotes good hygiene. Each urinal features a sink built into the top of it which allows a user to clean their hands immediately after use and flushes the urine away without requiring any additional water.

The King Of Urinal is a concept design by Jang Wooseok to help make urinals more sustainable in their water usage and to encourage users to wash their hand straight after use. The tap of the urinal appears to be triggered by a sensor, this coupled with the sinks location help to ensure that any germs from urinating are quickly washed away before having any chance to be transferred elsewhere.

The water that is used to wash a users hands is then reused to flush the urinal. This reuse of the water helps to reduce the amount of water required to maintain a toilet facility. Usually fresh water is used to flush a urinal and any water used to wash hands simply becomes waste. By allowing the relatively clean hand washing water to be reused the system would quickly reduce the amount of water needed to ensure a clean and hygienic toilet area.

Clear Rain is a device that allows you to filter rain effectively and efficiently and allows you to attach hosing to take the cleaned rain to where it is needed, for a pool, pond or any form of water storage.

Clean Rain has been designed by Rain Harvesting Pty Ltd to connect to downpipes to collect and filter the rainwater running through them. The intelligent system features a device known as Smart Sense that allows the system to discard the ‘first flush’ of water that comes through the pipes. The first flush of water is high in contaminants: dirt, dust, bird dropping and other such items are washed off the roof and out of piping from the initial burst of rain. Once this first flush has passed the system starts to divert the water passing through its filters to be sent through any piping or hosing connected to it.

The system uses a comb device to remove any leaves from the rainwater, the water is then filtered through a stainless steel wire mesh which removes small contaminants, even tiny mosquito eggs from the water. The Clean Rain system comprises from 90% lead free UPVC, the remainder of it has been constructed from PP. Both materials are suitable for recycling once the system has come to the end of its useful life and the system has been designed to allow you to quickly and easily break it apart into single material items to allow for easy recycling.

The Clean Rain system helps to make using rainwater simpler and allow the water to be used on a wider range of things. The rain water can be stored for watering a garden, or put into a pond. Due to its cleanness it can also be used in a pool, or set to be stored in a large water storage tank for use in toilets or such devices.

By making use of rainwater you help to reduce the amount of processed water you household requires. Processing water for suitability for taps involves many chemicals, many argue it is best to use water without these for your plants, and is sensible to have back up water to help reduce demand on mains water. The Clean Rain system makes collecting cleaned rainwater easy, allowing you to make use of it however you wish.

The Mini Hydro Clock is a small clock (about 2.5cm by 5cm) which simply displays the time. No alarm function, no date or calendar information. Just the time.

However, what is interesting is that you can power it with any fluid you like, including water, juice, milk and beer. I imagine that the smell from the milk when it goes off will be pretty nasty though! Considering you can use almost any water-based solution to power the clock without batteries…. you could use urine too!

The SteriPEN is an eco-friendly gadget ideal if you’re travelling to areas with typically unsafe drinking water. The WaterMill is an elegant solution for providing pure drinking water, by literally condensing water vapour in the air into an internal chamber. According to the ElementFour website, atmosphere contains between 4g and 25g of water per cubic metre. Of which, the WaterMill can convert between 10 and 40% of that water vapour into drinkable water.

Since water in the atmosphere is replenished by natural events, such as evaporation and plant transpiration (as well as respiration and perspiration from humans!!), the atmosphere is a continuous source of water vapour. The condenser can extract up to 12 litres of water per day, which is plenty of drinking water for a whole family.

The WaterMill is designed for residential use, to be installed outside the home. The green gadget is completely self-regulating, maintaining it’s own balance of energy consumption and water production. Theoretically, if the unit was solar powered too, you’d have a completely free source of drinking water. I just wonder what protection is built in to protect against Legionnaires Disease typically associated with cooling units.
